Coach Search Options after Autry

I disagree I think a large portion of this fan base wants or has been talked into an outside the su family hire.

If I could refine that a bit, I would venture to guess that most would PREFER due diligence, and not limiting our choices like last time. Many [most?] also see that what we've done for 8+ years hasn't worked, so they prefer a clean break / new strategic direction, and would be frustrated with another internal hire -- because of the perception that the nut doesn't fall too far from the tree.

IF gmac gets hired, I think the fanbase would initially rally behind him.

But I predict that the patience would evaporate faster than it did for Red if the turnaround isn't quick and tangible from the jump.

Beware, we are all morons

30% of the time, I'm stupid every time.

^^^This, and you better believe GMAC knows this.

I agree to a point with not officially releasing it but if it’s locked up and accepted then other coaches who interviewed would have been told already and had to move on .. Some would say they are no longer interested .. it’s just how it works .. People would know and it would leak some clues that someone has been hired
So far the process has been done through agents or quietly. There is no reason to announce you are no longer interested if you haven’t publicly lobbied or interviewed for the job.

I mean Syracuse had to stretch to get NIL this season because it was obvious the coach was in way, way, way over his head and allegedly wasn't out fundraising like our football coach does. Unless someone had a direct connection to the team/program or just enjoys lighting money on fire, I can't imagine it was easy to draw large sums of money from people who would be happy to support if the program was healthy or there was hope that it would start to trend that way.

Success begets success. And in college sports just the hope of success can beget success.

Reading every post in this thread I think 3 things

1) l believe some posters love to argue.
2) l can’t believe some posters still call out insiders on information they are just passing along.
3) I wish I invested in a speed reading course.
During graduate school I worked for Evelyn Woods Speedreading (true). It went by fast.

I dont know how su could sell this one to the alumni and fans.
There's definitely a segment of alumni/fans that will be disappointed if it's anyone but Gerry. And tbf, he may be a good HC and could be the right hire in retrospect. But it feels like we can hire someone more proven right now and pursue Gerry further down the line if he continues proving himself.

And could get real ugly. If people think Red was getting undeserved criticism, wait until fanbase darling Gerry has a .500 seasons or misses the tourney out of the ACC for a couple of seasons. as I've posted before, the tank of fan goodwill was emptied for Boeheim's last few years and Red didn't do anything to fill it back up other that a little excitement when he was hired. A new outside will get a bit more leeway, but even that I think is doubtful. They could bring in Hodgson and if he stumbles a bit, it'll get ugly.

But I don't want to see Gerry getting booed out of the dome and fired in two years because he wasn't really ready and was pushed forward by a basketball alumni group desperate to remain in control.

Messing around with ChatGPT came up with the perfect analysis of this hire:

“Syracuse isn’t just hiring a coach… they’re choosing whether to stay a museum of the Boeheim era or become a modern contender again.

If you had to bet today:

👉 Bryan Hodgson will be the next Syracuse head coach

Because:
  • He checks every modern box
  • He has regional ties without being stuck in the past
  • And most importantly…
Syracuse feels like it’s choosing between:
🧡 nostalgia

vs

🚀 evolution

Right now, all signs point to evolution winning.”

Very true.

And so long as the minimum thresholds are met for resources, I've maintained that any competent / confident coach will look at our situation, see that the foundation is adequate to start, and think "I can work with that, and once I turn things around it will take off."

There is literally nothing in this post that I agree with.

  • You don't like Hodgson because you don't like the way he speaks?
  • There have been many "leaks" saying this is a done deal.:rolleyes:
  • Why would GMac "remove himself"? Why? If nothing else, remaining in the running would put him in a position to better his deal

Once again it's amazing that this needs to be said.
lol it happens all the time in college sports where a coach accepts a position and it is announced and coaches out the team in the postseason .. sometime the team chooses to move on like a lane kitten or back in the day at Michigan when Bill Frieder left .. and even if it’s not above officially many are working the recruits to stay ahead . I’m not saying it won’t be, If it was a done deal already

100% agree immediate pressure on Gerry but if he hits as a coach .. There would be nothing like it . Quick pub and relevance … And I think where he goes he hits quickly .. Dude can coach… what would be bad too is if Gerry hits and next guy doesn’t and they can’t get him back

Here is the aspect I haven't see discussed yet. What if either guy gets off to.a bad start? The fan base will be patient with bh. He's never been here before. If gmac does people are going to.be all over him. This is autry 2.0, another bad boeheim tree guy.

Actually it’s been discussed a lot and one of the big concerns with GMac given we just had a JB tree guy get fired.

I think it'll be a 50/50 split if Gerry was hired. I know a lot of people who would be ecstatic with the hire including current coaches in lower ranks and a lot of people in my inner circle who are just done with Boeheim disciples. My brother in law who does coach in the lower college ranks thinks he's great and my wife wants him just because that's her favorite former player.

Personally my reservations about Gerry have to do with the lack of offensive ingenuity. I think he'd build a team that play hard tough defense, but we would likely still struggle to score. Until he proves differently it's not an inspiring hire. I do think he will ultimately be a better HC than either Red or Hop.

too lazy to look- are any of the mentioned or feasible candidates in the SU orbit hireable now? That is, not coaching a team that is still playing and not including Hopkins
