Yeah and this is an undercurrent of this search that maybe isn't being discussed enough. I don't want to divert any money from football to basketball. Not revenue sharing, not NIL, nothing.
We aren't going to be able to contend the way we want if we aren't in a P2 conference when the dust settles. We get there with football, and by the way, if the other Northeast schools don't make it, we will have no problem beating them for coaches and recruits and resurrecting as the hoops power of the Northeast. Us against Penn State and Rutgers for Northeast hoops dominance? I like our chances.
I actually think if you want a long-term Gerry tenure because he is in the family and we get a little discount and he'll never be eyeing the exit, you're doing a disservice to him by hiring him now. He's not ready for this job, and this job isn't ready for him.
I'd be looking for a tactician who can win with less, and when I say win, I mean be middle of the pack in the ACC with bottom 5 ACC spending. Otherwise, I'd be looking for someone with short-term NIL attached that is not siphoning NIL from football. It sounds like Hop may have that.
To be clear, while I love Hop, I think he's a terrible hire in general. But he might be an acceptable steward of the program as we try to get over the hump conference-wise. Maybe if rumors are true about the Melo cash, we can buy our way to a Final Four run and extend the decades streak, then solve the big picture problems in five years.
It's also tricky, because it's not like the AD is going to come out and say we're tanking to focus on football, so we have to read the tea leaves.
