Coach Search Options after Autry

I am done making any predictions. There are so many factions, and those factions have factions. There’s only thing I’m sure of is that this process is like herding cats.

I’m just gonna sit back and see how it unfolds. I know the Heimer wants to keep it “in the family”, just not sure he has the juice to do it.

I have a different question for people worried about getting left out of the next cycle...

Do you think Kansas will get left out?

That is a small piece of good news

Even if no HC yet, they have to say something to counter the narrative around the Hodg snub that the funds aren't there... and mebbs that the school nixxed him as a candidate (if that is true.)

Thought that would be today actually.

Just to be clear as much as we love basketball, the thing that gets us to the next level is football. It’s the most important thing we have to get right

Yeah and this is an undercurrent of this search that maybe isn't being discussed enough. I don't want to divert any money from football to basketball. Not revenue sharing, not NIL, nothing.

We aren't going to be able to contend the way we want if we aren't in a P2 conference when the dust settles. We get there with football, and by the way, if the other Northeast schools don't make it, we will have no problem beating them for coaches and recruits and resurrecting as the hoops power of the Northeast. Us against Penn State and Rutgers for Northeast hoops dominance? I like our chances.

I actually think if you want a long-term Gerry tenure because he is in the family and we get a little discount and he'll never be eyeing the exit, you're doing a disservice to him by hiring him now. He's not ready for this job, and this job isn't ready for him.

I'd be looking for a tactician who can win with less, and when I say win, I mean be middle of the pack in the ACC with bottom 5 ACC spending. Otherwise, I'd be looking for someone with short-term NIL attached that is not siphoning NIL from football. It sounds like Hop may have that.

To be clear, while I love Hop, I think he's a terrible hire in general. But he might be an acceptable steward of the program as we try to get over the hump conference-wise. Maybe if rumors are true about the Melo cash, we can buy our way to a Final Four run and extend the decades streak, then solve the big picture problems in five years.

It's also tricky, because it's not like the AD is going to come out and say we're tanking to focus on football, so we have to read the tea leaves.

Is Travis Steele (Miami Ohio) related to former Cuse alum Lexington Steele? Could be a real solid in, if we dont blow it...
Don't know. And NO! I don't care who wouldn't play Miami, fact is their non-conference schedule was 363rd out of 365 teams. The best nonconference team they played was Wright St. The MAC is a good conference and they deserve credit for going unbeaten. And as a MAC guy myself it would have been ridiculous for them not to make it with their record. But Travis Steele is mediocre coach that failed in the Big East at Xavier.

In my opinion, having spent time in Lawrence..No chance they get left out. Maybe K State...But KU has some big money and spends a ton on facilities...30 min from Kansas City...its a big brand in the midwest

Word is they aren't going to be in the cycle. They really like Vaughn apparently.

No I meant like when the P4 consolidates. Will Kansas be in the power conferences whatever they maybe or will they be on the oustide looking in.

A Luke Murray or Travis Steele would be just right

Ah, I'd imagine they'd be in some trouble considering their football program is pretty weak.

He’s a really good coach that does what he does with nothing. His brother Groce is an option but I like Steele more

So call me a cynic...I can't help but think outside of the obvious loyalty to his former players/assistants that there is an additional reason JAB would prefer it to "stay in the Cuse Family". Something makes me think he envisions his "buddy" (JTB), as an assistant or maybe more at Cuse at some point in his lifetime and that is easier if an alum is at the reigns. Just my $.02 opinion.

Now as far as BH vs. GM I guess you can call me lame or whatever but I was content with either of them getting the job. I am a believer that BH is a really good coach but not sure I think he will be the next Rick Pitino. He isn't perfect and some want to dislike him for an interaction with a player on the GW team that used to have SU ties. I can't envision him getting involved in that unless provoked by a player or coach so I would never say that should be the reason he doesn't become the Cuse head coach.

I also think GM is a pretty good coach. If anyone thinks that it would be the same culture as it was the last 3 years on the hill, I strongly disagree. He is a leader of young men just like BH. I think he gets crushed by fans unfairly with the way recruiting was going when he was going head to head with Cal, Self, K, Roy etc. That was an unfair fight and it wasn't like Coach K was rolling Nolan Smith out there to square up with Cal for top players. Additionally, he is being penalized from the fan base because the most recent coach went down in a blaze but there was certainly no glory.

It can only get better folks. Will Cuse ever be the teams I grew up with ('87, '96) or the best teams I witnessed in adulthood ('03, '10, '12)? Right now looks like no. However it certainly will be better than the last 3 years and even the end of the JAB era sans the sweet 16 team in 2021. Have faith it's what idiots like us still living in this upstate climate need to keep smiles on our faces!

My problem is if gmac or hop was the best candidate out there I'd hire them despite wanting to.go outside the program. Neither one is hop failed at wash. Gmac has had 2 good years. If his name was gerry Smith with the same resume he wouldn't even be on the radar.

BH is seen as head and shoulders better but he only has 2/3 years of success at midmajors. Again, I’m cool with him but it seems like he might be getting outsized credit for being outside the family and running a cool offense. He’s different, so he’s better.

Can I get CliffsNotes on why the Lally’s are maybe irked? It certainly can’t be over Lyke.

If the Hodg candidacy was scuttled internally via other bball donors/power brokers/new AD and Haynie rubberstamped it... i.e. whatever Lally and Wildhack had been negotiating with team Hodg got kaboshed...

Plus, if Lally took whatever $$ he had planned for Hodg and re-allocated it to the USF "stay" offer package, well, there's a bunch of money not going towards our next HC and going to USF instead... No idea if that's true, but it is a rumor.

At the end of the day, seems there also seems to be a fair number of VIPs on the basketball side that don't want Lally involved with bball, dislike him quite a bit, and think he's power hungry and overstepping his station after the AD debacle, in particular.

Looks like we aren't serious about being in the next round of realignment, so maybe we should go back to the Big East and give up football.

Is there anything out there as far as SU having actually interviewed anyone yet? Or are interviews old school for coaches?

They'd be okay, but would prefer to avoid someone w/ no HC experience (Murray) or who was fired when coaching at a higher level (Steele) after finishing 500 or below in conference 4 consecutive years. Phil Martelli is 3 for 3 in 20 plus seasons and has made the tournament twice in a row with different teams. Would be an excellent choice.
