Coach Search Options after Autry

This seems like 5 dimensional chess where GMac will be head coach

First, even though GMac was JB’s choice to replace him, he couldn’t jump over Red because Red was Associate HC with more experience, plus other factors

Red is given the job with basically no other candidates being considered. He was also given little resources or has the strategic mind to develop a program in the new world of college basketball. He fails and is fired.

GMac, in parallel, goes to Siena and turns the program around, albeit at a significantly lower conference. He’s cut his teeth to show he can coach, at least at a lower level.

Next, everyone is clamoring to go outside the family. Here’s a guy from upstate NY that grew up a Cuse fan who has successfully turned around two programs and feels like the obvious choice. Talks, if they are happening, somehow fall apart, even though the guy is busy prepping his team for the biggest game of his life.

Now there’s no other candidates being considered except GMac. So he’ll get the job he should have gotten 3 years ago.

Seems like a masterful plan.
Not necessarily a fan of GMAC getting the job - but he was Melo’s teammate. I wonder what role if any that Melo plays in the coaching decision. And I wonder how he would feel about GMAC coaching.

" Luke Murray is a key recruiter for UConn men's basketball. As a UConn assistant coach since 2021, he is widely regarded as one of the nation’s top recruiters and was instrumental in assembling elite talent for the Huskies, leveraging his extensive recruiting background at Xavier and Louisville."

Some Phil Martelli Jr Info:

"Phil Martelli Jr.’s defensive philosophy centers on aggressive, disruptive pressure, often utilizing a versatile 2-3 zone that morphs into man 2 man to force turnovers and control tempo. His teams focus on high-effort communication, switching to handle screens, and using "touch" techniques to disrupt rhythm, often aiming to create a modern, high-intensity "Havoc" style."

"Phil Martelli Jr.’s offensive philosophy centers on a high-tempo, read-and-react system that prioritizes pace, spacing and relentless attacking of the rim. He emphasizes "concept-based" basketball, teaching players to read defenses rather than running rigid set plays, focusing on four core areas: cutting, drive-and-kick, ball screens, and transition opportunities."

PMJ as a recruiter ---- "is recognized as a rising, high-energy coach and recruiter who emphasizes building genuine, long-term relationships with players and high-character scouting. Recently hired as VCU's head coach, he is adept at utilizing the transfer portal and focusing on recruiting tough, efficient players from winning programs to build competitive, sustainable rosters. SU isn't in a financial mess.

It's just not a natural NIL fit like some other places. NIL generally revolves around a few guys with money to burn, not broad based fundraising to normies that want to pay for athletes.
Which is why BB is here. Posted so you guys can see how quickly he hopefully will get us straightened out for NIL. Will take a little but it’s his bread and butter.

Nothing against JW but he did a lot but was getting old and stale and those ideas stop flowing. Not to mention there may have been some quiet quitting for a little and not a lot of motivation to try and overhaul our nil right before he retired.

JW is 67 and BB is like 40 too.

We need a complete nil reboot.

I’m not saying he’s the answer but it’s an option.

500 pages of insanity but haven’t we all said all along that we want a wide net and a real search. Put every option on the table and pick the best. Throw out the feelings and vibes.

The # of people here that said we have to have a real search to be a real program and on and on.

Then all the sudden said well not anymore cuz we need to lock up BH or Gmac since they made the tourney so nevermind on a real search give them what they want right now. A lot of hypocrites here lately.
The problem as it exists currently is not about picking the "best" from unlimited choices. It's about the reality of finding a coach who has a long, successful track record (NCAAT appearances) of doing more with less, and who is also willing to take the position given the lack of NIL resources. There will be no bump in the revenue share for basketball. Football is, and should continue to be, the #1 priority.

The basketball NIL situation is an embarrassment. There are multiple reasons for that. That is the problem.

The money is coming in, it's going to football and some to bball. Uconn hired a guy that absolutely no one else wanted that's why he went there, Candle has been at Toledo for years and hasn't gotten a sniff at a Power 5 job.

Syracuse and the Admin understand that fball drives the bus, they could easily cut half the football NIL resources and have Hodgson here in a heartbeat but it would make zero sense. SU has to continue to try and cultivate additional outside NIL dollars and the fanbase has to understand the fiscal reality of where the University is.
Can i ask a dumb but sincere question? Why is it so necessary that football drives the bus? I assume it has to do with eventual conference realignment and TV money, but what is the end game there? In my 40+ years of life, we have never been a national player on the football side, basketball is and always has been the brand in that timeframe. But now we have to essentially sacrifice our storied basketball program for…what exactly?

At the end if the day, what is the path to getting our hoops program back to prominence? Is it even possible, and we need football to come first to get us there? Or do we basically have to choose one or the other (and if so, why choose football)

No I meant like when the P4 consolidates. Will Kansas be in the power conferences whatever they maybe or will they be on the oustide looking in.
Kansas will make the cut; I can see them in the SEC or the Big Ten

This sounds a little like Schertz’s offensive philosophy.

It’s not hard to imagine why they agreed to fund the $1 billion water treatment facility they will need for the company. That’s a drop in a bucket for them. I guarantee, Brian Blair will be on the phone with them the first week he takes over. It’s malpractice if he doesn’t.
Not happening. Any money they invest is only an investment in themselves. They aren’t funding science programs out of the goodness of their heart, they are training futures employees.

I generally think it is a broad based approach that builds a steady base for roster and the big donors for the biggest targets. Once that happens then enthusiasm brings more committed people that are just regularly entrenched in their careers. They want to be more invested again, or have just gotten to a point where the time is right to jump in. Gotta jump in on a product with potential though. Think we were starting to see that with football.
