Coach Search Options after Autry

2 ago we were poor and concerned we would be battling BC for the basement. Now we have boatloads of money and some high level coach is heavily interested. This thread is hilarious.

It is an exercise in schizophrenia!

OK, so circling back to the Thamel report that multiple P5 coaches have reached out to 'Cuse. That's a lot trickier, because it could include people we wouldn't even entertain as candidates. But at the center of the Venn diagram of people who might feasibly reach out who we might be interested in, these are the names that make sense to me:

T.J. Otzelberger
Buzz Williams
Mick Cronin

There are plenty we'd be interested in who I don't think would reach out, and plenty who would reach out who I don't think we'd be interested in.

I'd be thrilled with either Otz or Schertz, and would take both over Gerry. I'd gamble on Gerry over Buzz or Mick.

Schertz being interested in us and reaching out would be a shock to me.

I'm gonna guess that whatever the NIL bag got upgraded to for GMAC... that word on it hit the streets with multiple agents and it peaked a lot of new interest from other candidates... Maybe Schertz agent included...

Now whether that money is still there for other candidates (besides GMAC) is the real question. May not be.

I could be 100% wrong about this... just guessing, but something stirred up the interest and money talks.

Well, there is one coach in the AL East who has won multiple coach of the year awards... and he ain't in the NE. And he really doesn't have any NIL!!!

Sounds about right to me. I imagine it wouldn't all be there for another coach, as I assume there is a lot of GMac only money, but with Blair fundraising and some of the money staying, could we get enough for a coach of Schertz caliber or higher to come? That would be an amazing amazing pivot.

The NIL must’ve received a nice bump because SLU has a TON of money. They have two extremely wealthy donors that poor it in. From the tea leaves it seems like they alone paid for the Schertz contract offer on the table.

So I was recently in Houston, and the rodeo was going on, so there were people in town from all over. During a long delay at the airport, I was hanging in the lounge and struck up a conversation with the guy next to me. Turns out, he's pretty high up in marketing at Hertz and he's a big college sports fan. I told him the Dan Mullen story with all the rental car jokes, and he loved it.

Then he leaned in close and told me I could never repeat this, but Hertz was actually in the process of working on a new NIL deal with a soon-to-be Syracuse head coach. He said they had the letters Hertz in their name and they were going to legally change their name to capitalize those letters in exchange for $10M a year of NIL money.

So, I don't think we're hiring Josh Schertz. But we might be hiring josh scHERTZ.

I asked him if they'd bump it to $11M a year if we agreed to call him HCHERTZ instead of HCJS on the forum, but that was a no go.

My biggest question in all of this is whether the leadership (Both ADs, the BoT, and the Chancellor) have the courage to make the correct basketball hire, even if it goes against what a large portion of the alumni base and casual fans want.

I think it all matters how big our NIL package is for a new coach that is not GMac.
