Coach Search Options after Autry

Stop knocking his accomplishments though. Also he’s gonna have a boatload of nil with him.
What are his accomplishments as a head coach though? 2 years in a bottom feeding conference with a nice conference tourney run and keeping the game close against a lackadaisical Duke?

His playing career can be a talking point but it has little to no impact on his coaching future. Plenty of other great college players couldn’t cut it as head coaches at a power school. Without proven coaching success, we’d just be hoping he’s able to do something he hasn’t yet.

Good post and accurate as I’ll agree in so far as this, initially you start with facts, stats and analytics, and in the big picture weighing each and ever factor the weight given to them is the greatest, by far…….the quantitative.

But then when making said big decisions one needs to factor in the nuance, the qualitative variables to help guide the process that may, or may not, affect the final outcome. Eg. all factors are equal in an anticipated move ($ etc), but ur wife likes one area more than the other.

Especially when in this case the qualitative reality considerations of a gmac will DIRECTLY effect the quantitative reality early on (greater jump on of fans, meaning attendance, NIL, $$ brought in early on).

A decision maker does themselves a disservice if they make a big decision based on quantitative data sets solely and only.
And similarly, they do a disservice by basing it exclusively out of motion and nostalgia.

I mean, of course. We can all hold out hope for an 11th hour surprise. I'm only dealing with the tangible info we actually have.
So what do you want us to do? I don’t necessarily think it’s holding out hope we just have no idea who they’ve interviewed so it’s hard to say this is what they should do. I know personally I’ve been hoping for Schertz since well before Red was officially let go so that’s who I want.

Who do you think we should hire at this point, RF?
If Scherz is real -- And in full disclosure, I'm not certain about that -- He should 100% be the top choice over anyone else in the field. Anyone and I don't want to hear anything about internal candidates. If he legitimately someone we can hire.

If the St. Louis coach is unrealistic, I also prioritize martelly over McNamara. I think I'm not as high on the Akron coach after watching them yesterday.

It was mentioned here by a trusted poster/insider. Similar to the info on the other Hurley interview. What else do you want to substantiate, a press release from BB on the full list of candidates?
I've been paying close attention to which names being thrown out have any actual substantiated legs. Maybe I missed someone substantiating Murray beyond "why don't we go after him?" posts

Exactly, which is why everyone running with this Gmac outcoached me comment, should not be.
I also think that coaches would love to see GMac at SU. It just fits. Not that Red didn’t, just that his time as player was so long ago a lot of people don’t have that visual connection.

But he is Gerry McNamara. That’s a factor. This team belongs to the town as much, if not more than the University. He shouldn’t get the job because he is Gerry McNamara, but he did a great job at Siena. By all accounts his teams played hard and they improved over time. He had a better game plan against Duke than we did.
Sometimes, the right answer pops up. If he was still one of Red’s assistants, no way he should get the job. He ventured out, had proven himself as much as he can at this point in time. The 80/20 rule applies in this universe as well.
He proved himself in one of the lowest ranked leagues, and even then finished 3rd. He has ablot of potential, but is it really so terrible to want to see him prove himself in a higher level league before a P4 job?

If the donors are only willing to give more money if its for GMac then they are morons. Not a point against GMAC, just that donors are being specific for a coach who has objectively achieved less... but more so the fact they are not making money available for any coach. Its their right and their money, but I can still call it out as flawed.

If its donors that are leading to this poor decision, than perhaps its time for me to stick even more with pro sports. Where decisions are at least made by coaches, GM's and owners... sometimes poor but that is another point.
It's the donors money, they can do with it whatever the hell they want to, including not donate it to SU and/or disagree with your viewpoint.

Fix it - get incredibly wealthy and then you can do whatever you want to with you money and someone else on a board can call you a moron.

You do realize that the majority of Schertz's head coaching experience is with bottom feeding conferences, yes? Some people will prefer that he has more years of experience as a head coach, even if he spent 13 years at DII Lincoln Memorial. Some people will prefer that Gerry was an assistant coach at the highest level, going to multiple Final Fours, etc.

That is his name. His accomplishments here are spoken for and he’s in the rafters for a reason

Turning around Siena is a heck of a job by him. First tournament for them since what, 2010? 2 years removed from a 4 win season. It’s a great start to his coaching career

I just look at his teams metrics, the games i watched, and the conference he’s in and think it’s a bit crazy that someone with his coaching career is getting serious consideration for the HC job here

The NIL that can come with him? Great. I hope he gets all of it and more if he’s the guy. I just don’t think we can afford to screw it up and if that was me making the hire I am doing everything I can to go get the best possible candidate. I just don’t think that’s Gerry today

I dont want to list them all again LOL I am too tired it is pointless. We are hiring GMac
It's great to have a list of guys you want. And it's fine to hope for some pleasant surprise. I'm just going by what we actually know right now
