Coach Search Options after Autry

I can't emphasize enough how much I hate this. I will support Gmac 1000% but this is so ridiculous. We're doing the same exact thing as hiring Autry! Did nobody learn their lesson these last 3 years?

It was very evident by year 1 or 2 that Autry couldn't coach, but we were forced to give him a 3rd year "because he's a Syracuse legend ". Imagine how hard it will be to fire Gerry if its clear he also cant get it done. His leash will be huge! We have to make the tournament next year, full stop and no excuses. It has been done countless times with new coaches. I'm sick of the waiting and giving time. The time is now
And what’s worse is if GMAC isn’t successful, the Talking Heads (JB) will blame it on NIL resources. There’s a built-in excuse for mediocrity

Oh, it won't be in a few years that is for sure. But you and I both don't know the numbers and I wouldn't argue that I do. But I will tell you that I have been told by someone in a place to know that money is coming out of the woodwork if it is Gerry
Let’s hope some of it is sustainable and not just a one-time, year 1 pledge. Getting businesses involved would be great and hopefully ADBB builds there.

I worked for an organization that once paid $50,000 for a marketing firm to upgrade their logo, etc. They ultimately added an orange line underneath the existing logo.
I can beat that. When I was at Bank of Boston, we hired a firm to help us with our name change. We paid them 1 million dollars. they changed the name to BankBoston. Took the of out. We liked the job they did so much that we hired them to help with our mutual funds which were named the 1784 funds. They changed it to Boston 1784. A half a million for that. No joke. I always thought they must have been laughing their butts off.

Well I will always root for Syracuse, and I hope Gerry does a hell of a job, but I certainly will not be paying thousands of dollars to watch it. I do not see how this hire will move the needle at all, If I am wrong ill be the first to admit it, but we will see pretty quickly how serious Syracuse is with basketball because there will need to be serious roster reconfiguration and it will be expensive.

No question about that. If we do have the money, we better spend it and spend it wisely.

Reading through it all - seems like there perceptions/themes won out on the end

1 - finances. Either Cuse is poor or very good at pretending they are poor. In any case, Gerry’s salary would not have been nearly enough to get a bigger time proven coach.

2 - hometown bias. The local community doesn’t follow basketball closely enough to recognize an outside name. And the administration was convinced (rightly or wrongly) that Gerry would be better for attendance

3 - alumni/NIL - pressure from former players who only said they would give NIL to Gerry. This one seems hard to believe, but all ties into the first two points. And if true, makes a difference as many posters have said. An extra $3-4m really moves the needle

All this makes me understand why it happened. I’d prefer a more experienced coach at this critical point in the program. I worry if we go 13-19 the attendance/NIL part will quickly drop. Winning trumps nostalgia in the medium term

I’ll always support Gerry. If the risk pays off, the rewards will be amazing. If we had to go with the “family” hire he’s the best choice.
