Coaching Candidates (My List)

I really think you have to look at Ben McCollum as a candidate to replace Red. He’s 18-2 at Drake this season with a revamped roster and has four D2 national titles. And he’s only 43!

Phenomenal coach.

He has everything that we SHOULD have been looking for in a head coach when we made the change from JB.

Will be tough to pull him from the midwest, IMO. Also think he's going to have lots of opportunities to jump after this season, even though it is his first at Drake.

Would love this, if we could swing it.

Agree. Great coach. Being from Iowa City, he'd probably be a candidate for Iowa though if they ever decide they want a coach who can coach defense

As much as our team needs something to change, with next year's recruiting class and the standard of giving a coach 3 years, I just don't see a change coming this year.

A shocking number of posters here are far more interested in seeing Lala and the Kardashians in the dome than fielding a decent team.
That’s not what people are saying at all. They’re asserting that Melo and Lala and their wealthy associates and friends will be helping to boost our NIL situation next season so we can get better players out of the portal. It’s hard to turn away from that if it’s true. If that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen or is just a bunch of bluster, then I would let Red go and hire a high level coach instead. Wildhack has to figure this out asap.

A fair number of college football coaches hired for 2023 were fired after two seasons. But they, for the most part, had losing records. The problem with Autry is that his overall 2-year record is unlikely to dip down low enough to justify a move. As much as I find it a meh hire and meh performance... isn't the issue really that the program is not THAT much worse than before? A few games above .500, a few games below. Sad state that it has been so long since we have been ranked even. Next year will be make or break. For the good of the program, let's hope it is "make" (even if there is little evidence to support it to be likely)...

A recruiting class unless it has Cooper Flagg in it should never be a reason to keep a coach.

In 2015 yes.
In 2025, where more impact is made by doing consistently going things in the portal, no.

What people don't understand is that it's likely a binary choice. NIT is probably the ceiling with this staff, unless multiple all-American caliber players somehow join the roster. I can't see this staff being successful unless it has absolutely overwhelming talent, and even then I wouldn't be confident.

SU might need the Kardashian entourage just to boost attendance numbers if Red is retained.

Yeah, I think this is a lot of board wishful thinking. No one was saving the day in 2023 or 2024, but they're going to donate in 2025 and make everything awesome again? How is that sustainable? Is funding dependent on Kiyan starting and playing big minutes? What if he's not particularly good as a frosh? What about in 2026? 2027? Is he a guaranteed starter til he graduates?

I don't see how a 1-off year with a bunch of FAs playing playground ball with a couple of freshmen is going to move the needle much.

It's all about asses in seats. Giant Kardashian asses.

It has the potential to be pretty bad... unless Kline unearths and gets some real experienced gems from the portal with sufficient NIL coffers augmented by Melo and friends. And who knows? Maybe Dasher can help get Weitsman back on board and contributing as well??... and even if they do get the roster decent on paper, there's no reason to believe at this point that our current staff will be able to coach them effectively.

If they can't get the NIL to get necessary experience and good roster construction from the portal, I fear it will get ugly fast and the school could be hat-in-hand begging people to attend the home games to stem the revenue bloodletting shortfalls...

Lot's of ifs.

When first reading through that last sentence I did a double take, as for whatever reason I read it as “if Red is ret——-“ He most certainly is not, but i guess that’s my subconscious working due to my lack of satisfaction of where we are at.

What's depressing is that even if they get talent, I don't think it will be utilized effectively. I used to scoff at posters saying our "success" last year was only due to Mintz, Copeland, et al. going off script. Now I think they might be right.

Been thinking the same thing, honestly... and that Grandpa Mintz was actually NOT off his rocker.

In any event, it's not like this would be an unforseen outcome with a legacy continuity hire, first-time HC.

Fact is a lot of them fail and can't make the leap. Especially, where our our program was at when the baton was handed-off.

We knew those odds going in.

I'm kind of with you.

BUT I do think that Melo [I'll set aside any ancillary celebs beyond him and LaLa] will be motivated to help put a winning squad around Kiyan. So it is reasonable to expect that he would be willing to donate, and to help engage his network to build out NIL coffers.

I also think that it is rationalized to complain about our lack of NIL at this time. Red isn't coaching well. A good coach would coax more productivity out of this current roster. Not that we'd be a top 10 team, but far more competitive than we've shown.

Which is why I think it is borderline fantasy to think that just having more NIL $$$ will magically solve Red's issues. Sure, one way to dig out of the hole is to get more talented players, but if the HC can't coach, will it matter?

For me I want Cuse to be like Marquette and (hopefully) Michigan State. Both have veteran teams of guys they signed, developed, and they stayed.

Maybe you augment it here and there but I do feel even in the NIL age you need a core of multi-year program guys.

That's still the best path to go on, IMO, and there's been some initial analysis that teams fare better with a core of developed players versus an NIL fueled portal team. I couldn't find the article again though, so no idea how relevant is to schools like SU or if it was about getting a bunch of top-20 HS recruits.

But that also doesn't mean stick with the same players year-in and year-out hoping they get better because you recruited them out of high school. If they're not showing out, sorry, but this is professional sports. Move on and patch holes with portal transfers. Building a team around core players like Chris Bell and JJ Starling hasn't exactly borne fruit.
So it is reasonable to expect that he would be willing to donate, and to help engage his network to build out NIL coffers.
Reasonable, sure, but concur that it's not a magic bullet. My personal opinion is that there is going to be a lot of smoke from the program to justify Year 3 to fans and it's going to fall on deaf ears unless there are significant, and I mean significant improvements on all fronts. And if it fails, then what? I don't think building a team around a legacy's kid in hopes that it fixes everything else is a sustainable approach. It's about buying time.
