Coaching Candidates (My List)

Va Tech isn't that much better either and didn't they have a bunch of guys portal out last season.
They have 0 NIL. Jones is super connected in the entire DMV. He and Straugn would bring in players.

If he could coach like he did at DeMatha I would possibly take a chance if JW strikes out on other coaches first.

Name out of left field...

Billy Donovan.

-Probably wont last the season with the Bulls
-Has a relationship with Melo (Coaching him in OKC)
-I am pretty sure they both spoke highly of each other

-Can we afford him?
-Does he want to go back to NCAA?
- Older coaches seem to be running away from NIL and NCAA?

I doubt that he would come or we would pay for him but I thought he was an interesting name especially if we are trying to keep the "MELO MONEY"

Don't know Billy personally, but I don't think there are many NCAA jobs that a current NBA head coach would leave for in the current environment. If there are any, SU would not be on the list at this point imho

I am under the assumption he will not make it through the season with the Bulls.

It will never ever happen. It would just an interesting connection with Melo lol

I actually looked at the Bulls record before I posted and figured there was a possibility he might be gone. I'd still be surprised if he was interested in the NCAA again

I agree, but are you cheap if you don't actually have it to spend?

If that’s the case just close up shop now. I don’t believe it to be true because we are making a run at it with football which is far and away the most expensive of all the sports to compete in.

I think you just answered the question, a lot is being spent on football right now. It is pretty clear basketball, men and women’s, is not the main priority at the moment.

The biggest issue will be allocation of resources. Revenue from basketball and football in the future doesn’t just get siphoned off into the general fund through creative accounting and use charges to pad the budget. It’s going to be a weird few years as higher ed figures out how to adapt. Some will most won’t.

I've been ready for Autry to go since ND game but thought he would be back for year 3. Now I'm in the camp that I don't think he can survive a single digit win year or not making the ACCT and that's what territory we're approaching.

Without scrolling back 9 pages what's the top 3 on this board looking like?

I’m worried that Wildhack and the administration are going to be lazy and go with the local guy, Matt Langel, since they are all familiar with him, and the local press will eat it up because they all know and like him. But I think it would be a mistake. He’s never been an assistant coach or recruiter at a high major level. The jump from the Patriot league to the ACC is too high, and he has had double digit losses at Colgate almost every year. It took him like 7 years to even get Colgate turned around. He’d probably be a solid hire, but I don’t believe he has a high ceiling.

I prefer Hodgson, McCollum or maybe Ryan Odom.

A P4 program is gonna grab Hodgson at the end of this season... Please let it be us.
I agree, if the season plays out as expected. But it's worth keeping in mind that the Sun Belt is a one-bid league, so if you don't win the conference tournament, no NCAAs. Arkansas State lost to James Madison yesterday (decent, but not last year's JMU), so they're not invincible. If he doesn't get them to the tournament, it might be hard to sell P4 programs on a guy with two years head coaching experience at a mid/low major and no NCAA appearances.

ACC is getting close to a 1 bid league

I don't think Billy wants any part of this NIL/portal travesty. He's 60 at least, can't see him wanting to put up with the crap.

In terms of reclamation project coaches, what about Chris Mack? He absolutely killed it at Xavier, going 215-97 over nine seasons, finishing 1st in his conference three times and top 3 another three times. He had them as a #1 seed in the tourney in 2017-18. He struggled in 2 out of 4 seasons when he left to coach at Louisville, but in his second season, they were a very good top 10 team and a possible title contender (but never got to prove it when Covid hit). I think some of his struggles at Louisville came from the hangover of the NCAA FBI investigation and probation at the end of the Pitino era. And then he got suspended for some games in his third season because of the Dino Gaudio extortion drama. He didn’t do anything wrong but it was more bad PR for the university, and he decided to resign after his team struggled in year 4. He took two years off coaching and is now head coach at Charleston and has them at 10-3 and #1 in their conference. I always thought he came off as kinda douchey, but he’s a proven winner and knows how to run a high level program.

That's a good pull. I really liked him while he was at Xavier

Coincidentally, Pat Kelsey, who’s now the head coach at Louisville, was a protege of Mack’s. Kelsey was head coach at Charleston for the past several years before getting plucked last spring to lead Louisville after the Kenny Payne debacle. Then his old boss, Mack, took his job at Charleston.
