Coaching Carousel

Durkin must have gotten a ton of money for assistants.

When a middling program like Maryland can pay more for a non-coordinator position coach (like all three of these guys) than programs like Ball State can pay for their head coach, it really shows how wide the gap has become between P5 programs and the unloved toy programs not in P5 conferences.

MD is also getting a lot of money from Under armor, Like Oregon with Nike

Interesting, I kept thinking a Spaziani type would be good for our DC. But didn't realize he was almost 70 and hadn't done anything since leaving BC. Figured he was hanging them up.

That has yet to be seen. We do know Kevin Plank is giving them $25MM for the indoor facility. Beyond that there is no evidence he has ever given them a single dime to do anything else, otherwise Mike Leach would have replaced the Fridge instead of Edsall and Turgeon would not have replaced Gary Williams. Unless and until you see something in the press about Plank giving them money for coaches that "lot of money from Under Armor" is being stored in a room guarded by unicorns. Similarly, "Uncle Phil", as they call him on their board, gives Orygun building after building, but no one ever hears about his giving money for coaches.

Maybe so, I've read multiple articles stating that AU is planning on doing what Nike did with Oregon but with MD. They seem to have a significantly bigger purse compared to RU and both of those schools had similar fiscal issues going into the B1G. I do find the direction that both schools seem to be going very intriguing. MD seems to be loading up on ex-HC's to help mold/support their first time HC, will they start stepping on each others toes? Conversely it seems like RU is surrounding their first time HC with other young and hungry coaches with high ceilings, how many of these guys will be swing and misses?

Pittsburgh and Kentucky are two schools said to be considering hiring Locksley, a Washington native who has coached at Maryland for two separate stints, first as running backs coach from 1997 to 2002. Neither the school nor Durkin have announced Locksley's departure, perhaps became of his contractual situation is unresolved -- his contract continues through next season, but reliable sources said his exit appears to be a foregone conclusion.

Would love to pick up Locksley for recruiting purposes, but probably don't have a spot

Good for Lester. Hope he's not looking for a job again, eleven months from now.

Purdue has the guts and intelligence to hold the line and give their football program the support and time it needs to succeed .

That and they can't hire anybody better.

Maybe it's time to turn the page and let it go, Elsa.
Dino is going to need support here , as we are in the same situation as Purdue . Beohiem said a football coach needs 5 years , so people need to have that perspective. It could get worse before it gets better.

Purdue is 6-30 the last 3.

He'll get 4 at least, barring something out of left field.

Shafer made some bad hires, I don't know if that was because of budget or getting the band back together or both. 6-18, one game off of Grobian pace, -100 in offense and defense, is about as bad as it can get. There is no worse to be had.

I'm going to point this out again, over a four year period, allowing for a one year post Grob transition year, SU went 27-23 with three winning seasons and three bowl wins. And that was coming off of four years of historically bad in the sport and minimal resources and investment.

The roster isn't close to as poor, the resources and investments made since 2012 are much higher. The right hire can get this program back to winning more than losing almost immediately.

They are at the bottom of the B1G and SU is at the bottom , or near it , of the ACC.
Hazell would have been owed 6.6 million if they fired him at the end of this past season. They couldn't afford to fire him if they wanted to. Shafer was a rush hire late in the game. As he was part of the Marrone's staff, he was expected to at least keep the ship on course. He didn't do that and that's why he's gone.
