Coaching Comments to Recruit

Two TE offense are awesome... when you have Rob Gronkowski and pre-murder Aaron Hernandez.

But some of you should be ecstatic, you're always yapping about doing what we did in the 90s, so now we'll have the offense we coulda run when Roland Williams and Kaseem Sinceno were here!

Now where's my Backstreet Boys CD?!
Quit playing games with my heart.

Watching you and Milhouse get all spun up about this parade of horribles is entertaining.
Watching them do things the hard way is something I'm used to. They'll all be gone in a year or two. Knock yourselves out wmu

I would hire Steel Panther to coach this program.

Absolutely! Put him on 'roids for the Spring and we'll run the Seattle Seahawks offense!

Not a bad idea.

I thought him being a 4 starer that he'd just go out there and 4 star the hell out of the opposition. Problem solved.

I'm getting the impression that this points to something bigger . Like a new outdoor stadium in 3-5 years. Why build a organization based on something that wont exit In the very near future?

It's fine. The best offense SU's had in decades came with a power back, a non-split out TE, a QB who spent a good deal of time under center, and a lot of bunch sets. I'm not a football guy but my guess is this base package is pretty flexible. You don't need gronk and hernandez because the TE's arent running around against NFL backers/backs. You just need guys who can beat College backers and backs. Hopefully guys like Parris, Moore, Eniocy, Custis are up for it. I dont see why not, guys like Ferron, Provo, Wales and Stevens got open enough.

I'm starting to think about an offense similar to the Chiefs.

Let's look at more than SU please

I love how whenever a coach with a hot offense gets mentioned as a model to follow some people immediately question if it's the scheme or the talent, but if Stanford gets mentioned its assumed its a good scheme and you get to remind everyone that maybe, just maybe, Andrew Luck had something to do with their success.

So all you're saying is if SU can recruit the #1 overall pick in the NFL this offense will work? Should be easy enough.

Not that he would know a lot about the decision, but, HCSS told me that there was never any real legs IHO to the new stadium deal. Thinks what makes the most sense is to rip out the bleachers and put in chairs. Says that will reduce capacity down to around the number they're looking for (44K) and then they can make improvements to the façade and/or amenities and concessions available.

Here's the fact of the matter (in my opinion). Need to start scheming people open. We have a couple Wide Receivers tops that can do that through their accomplished route running. I'm sure some of my fellow coaching buddies can speak to this as well, but when you go to formations (like the 12 base people are speaking about), it gives the offense an advantage around the line of scrimmage. As a defensive coordinator, when I have teams that go Pro-Tight, Ace Tight, I-Double Tight; it puts more work on me to protect the box. I want to make sure I have players in every gap on defense. When you put two tight ends on the line of scrimmage, it accounts for two extra gaps I have to try and plug/contain.

When you strip formations and play calling down, the true key to success is "Do I have more helmets in this space than the other side?" If you do, you have a chance to break one, get positive yardage, and can create solid gains if everyone does their assignment. It also means it makes the BCR (backside counter/reverse) much more dangerous. If I'm shifting over players to get helmets in gaps when the Tight-End and H-Back are on the same side, the weak side LB/DE/CB need to be on their game in case of that counter, pitch, reverse - ESPECIALLY if you have pulling guards. An offense like the 12 formation can cause a lot of wrinkles a defensive coach has to worry about. This is the primary reason you have Offensive Coordinators falling in love with the bubble screen. If I have 3 WR's on 2 CB's, there's a higher probability that play can break for good yards (given the other intangibles are set up correctly). I've seen many college coaching clinics where Offensive Coordinators call plays based on statistics, percentages, and probability; because they're so good they've crunch those numbers.

Anywho - there's my opinion on the recent grumblings around what out offense could look like - from a DC aspect.

The simple truth is this:

2014
We rank #105 in total O.
We rank #29 in total D.

2013
We ranked #86 in total O.
We ranked #34 in total D.

If we were just average on offense we'd be bowling and in the top 3rd of our conference. Duck under all the unfair chatter about Shafer's job - and ask yourself: Can Lester get us to average? Like #60 (Duke) good? The answer is - no one knows. We haven't seen his system yet.

But what we do know is this: It's way, way, way to early to pull the plug on Shafer.

what would've had to happen this year for you to know that Lester can't get us to average?

the guy couldn't be luckier. he gets a job by default with no competition mid season because mcdonald stunk and he gets to keep the job by default without competition because of injuries

his YPG is 304. that would be 120th in the country. his yards per play would be 123rd

i want someone to admit that there is nothing that Lester could do to lose the job this year

why is this guy making decisions about the future?

I like that they are going to try what was successful in 2012. Lester may or may not be able to get this done, obviously it hasn't been pretty but he also hasn't had a lot of ammo. I don't think calling for an OC's head after 4-5 games is really beneficial for anyone. The funny thing is people wanted Hack fired in 2012 until the last 5-6 games. Like I said, Shafer will seal his fate one way or the other but he's clearly going to do it with his guys. Hell, people call for Bullough to be fired every other game, gets old. Each his own

Hopefully the hire a wr coach that can help as well.

There was nothing the guy could do to lose his job, aside from running naked through the quad. It's simple - he was given the keys to a broken down car mid-race, that didn't have the right parts to begin with - then the wheels came off when everyone got injured. Shafer obviously believes in him - he's giving him the chance despite the numbers not improving since the switch. And we've talked about this before - He's taking a chance on a guy he believes in - if Lester doesn't get us to average, they will both be looking for a job.

If you believe in a guy, you give him the keys to the car and let him install his system. The end.

LOL, didn't say I liked it, but there it is. We now have a FG kicker and punter all set for the next few years. Sound like a few of the pieces are done. We'll need a feature back and that is about it.

My question is what position can/can't you over recruit and miss on? TE's are usually not the best athlete so if the staff misses on them can they turn them into linemen? Since the staff is going for under the radar and talented players that have poor grades due to what they can actually get would over recruiting this position hurt or help depth if they miss more often than not?

Lester was his guy. From the beginning. The McD OC was a recruiting tactic, like giving a guy 44.

i would think that if you're considering fall back position changes, more WR would make more sense. you need just as many DBs and lineman and the conversion is more reliable imo
