It is important.

The act of planting trees on the Auburn campus is a national story.

For Syracuse University Football: (1) bring back the name "Orangemen"; (2) bring back the No. 44 Tradition; (3) bring back the TD Cannon/Bell; (4) bring back the Saltine Warrior Fight Song - change the lyrics if necessary; (5) bring back the old references "Bill Orange" and "Piety Hill"; (6) bring back the classic orange helmets, orange pants and home blue jerseys.

I like 1, 2, 3 and 6. I'm too young and don't know 4 or 5.

I would add the card section to the traditions that could be revived. It was (I think) between the 30 and 40 yard lines. The Greek houses often would complete sections of the block. I couldn't find a picture of the SU card section but here is a picture of the section at Illinois when they sing their alma mater.

greek houses also had large posters on their front porches with paintings and slogans on game day--su should have a competition each game day for best spirit posters and a some sort of prize sponsored by the local businesses for each home game.

Some pictures from Archbold...

This one is from the SU-Pitt game from 1958. I believe the cards depict a panther whose tail has been caught by an orange panther trap...

Syracuse v. Army 1956. Hope some day we can rekindle a series with them. They are a unique team to play. Would love to see SU play a game at West Point...

The last two are from a Syracuse v. BC game from 1972. Note the press box in the upper right corner and the old school wonderful uniforms Syracuse used to wear...

It sounded like Nike will give SU the orange we've all wanted -- pants, helmets, even jerseys. Tradition is fun, but remembering/respecting/honoring tradition needs to evolve, as well. I'm not sure I have an answer for that, but if there's a way to honor tradition while being progressive, I think Syracuse is a good program to do that with.

I think the only two on your list that have a chance are #2 and #6. In this PC world you are never going to see Orangemen or the Saltine Warrior again.

I don't trust Nike to give us anything we will like, given their recent track record. Hope I'm wrong.

So, why shouldn't we call our football team the Orangemen? Are we supposed to have coed participation as a goal? Are we denying that football is a rough game played by men? I don't get the whole androgynous philosophy here.

Nothing to do with "men" or "women" that follows the word Orange. When combined, i.e. Orangemen or Orangewomen, the PC police somehow link it to race. I've never understood it.

I think that by eliminating "men" from the name that Syracuse is trying to be encompassing of all the teams represented by the university. In fact I am having trouble thinking of any other school that are _____men.

mike francesca said the same thing years ago re the "orangemen" no one was taking offense to it or complaining but we changed it anyway

Hobart Statesmen.
Auburn Plainsmen.
California Lutheran College Kingsmen.
Hope College Flying Dutchmen.
Lebanon Valley College Flying Dutchmen.
Navy Midshipmen.
Oberlin College Yeomen.
Rhode Island College Anchormen.
Southern California Men of Troy.
Union College Dutchmen.
William Penn University Statesmen.

Maybe I am remembering wrong, but I don't know anyone that had a problem with the term Orangemen. Never heard an objection based on sexism. As far as I was aware. the female athletes were fine being Orangewomen and some even were unhappy with the change to Orange because they lost their uniqueness.

I think the decision to drop the terms Orangemen and Orangewomen was just another stupid marketing idea driven by the morons at Nike. Our athletic department was just more than willing to let Nike call the shots on this, along with a lot of other things that fans care a lot more about than the athletic department does. In fairness to Dr Gross, the decision to change the name of the athletic teams was made under Jake's watch.

Nike wasn't selling much Orangewoman merchandise. So they eliminated the entire product line.
