Maybe I am remembering wrong, but I don't know anyone that had a problem with the term Orangemen. Never heard an objection based on s e xism. As far as I was aware. the female athletes were fine being Orangewomen and some even were unhappy with the change to Orange because they lost their uniqueness.

I think the decision to drop the terms Orangemen and Orangewomen was just another stupid marketing idea driven by the morons at Nike. Our athletic department was just more than willing to let Nike call the shots on this, along with a lot of other things that fans care a lot more about than the athletic department does. In fairness to Dr Gross, the decision to change the name of the athletic teams was made under Jake's watch.
you are totally correct!!!!su can change it back---as i said in another thread francesca(sp) talked about the stupidity of it on his show. su needs to change it back as a step in recovering an identity.

"Nike wasn't selling much Orangewoman merchandise. So they eliminated the entire product line."

This is the reasoning I am aware of. The thought from Nike was that it was hurting merchandising because it was a tougher sell to get women to by shirts that had "Orangemen" emblazoned on them, and by separating "women" and "men" you weren't supporting the university, you were supporting a specific team or program, limiting the ease of sales and cashflow.

Really? I don't remover that

POTO member from 87-89. Played The Saltine Warrior all three years as part of pregame and occasionally in the stands too.

And references to Bill Orange were still common.

Seems like yesterday, but then I look in the mirror.

Some pictures from Archbold... This one is from the SU-Pitt game from 1958. I believe the cards depict a panther whose tail has been caught by an orange panther trap... Syracuse v. Army 1956. Hope some day we can rekindle a series with them. They are a unique team to play. Would love to see SU play a game at West Point... The last two are from a Syracuse v. BC game from 1972. Note the press box in the upper right corner and the old school wonderful uniforms Syracuse used to wear...

Tom, these are great!

Only one fix, switch to UA (right Bam?) they don't seem to have trouble selling anything :)

ditto the above but want the white home jerseys from the 60's---but will take the blue---orangemen is a must-- will need to bring back bill reddy and arnie burdick to get bill orange and piety hill ---loved the bye gone era --- oh well so much for renaissance guys

I'll take the home white jerseys - I love that look.

Archbold was a beautiful old place.

There was never an outcry to change the name Orangemen.

There is no reason why we still can't refer to the football players as Orange Men or Orangemen.

It is important.

The act of planting trees on the Auburn campus is a national story.

For Syracuse University Football: (1) bring back the name "Orangemen"; (2) bring back the No. 44 Tradition; (3) bring back the TD Cannon/Bell; (4) bring back the Saltine Warrior Fight Song - change the lyrics if necessary; (5) bring back the old references "Bill Orange" and "Piety Hill"; (6) bring back the classic orange helmets, orange pants and home blue jerseys.

My first SU football game was the last game at Archbold. I was hooked and have been a diehard ever since. That being said, I have no idea who Bill Orange is nor the significance of Piety Hill. I also have no recollection of a TD Cannon/Bell other than when some octogenarian cheerleader has a bell wheeled out at Homecoming. I just assumed it was something that used to be around like Packards and Five and Dime stores. Down, Down the Field is the only fight song I can ever remember being associated with Syracuse. I prefer Orangemen, but I've gotten used to Orange and wouldn't care either way. It sounds like orange pants are coming this year. If not, then that's something I can get behind that I'd like to see back. The orange helmets they wore this year were fine with me, other than the fact that sometimes they come across as cherry red. I actually liked the orange and blue together, only it needed to have orange as the predominant color. Regarding restoring 44, thanks to Mr. Washington and a few other recruits, I have changed my mind regarding its reinstatement. I am now in the camp of using it as a recruiting tool since many of these kids seem to like The Express. Might as well jump on that while the movie is still relevant.

While tradition may be important to some, it's not to all. Depending on the person and their age, different traditions may be valued. Keep in mind, some people may view jingling keys or the wave as traditions that they might want to keep.

Is there not a standard now where the home team wears dark, and road wears white? Those of you calling for white home jerseys, I'm not sure you could.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the home team gets to choose, since LSU and GIT usually wear white at home.

You have to declare your intentions before the season starts. That's how LSU and GaTech get away with it.

Are you saying that our 14 uniform combinations we wore over the span of 6 home games were declared intentions before the season started?

I think you have to declare if you're wearing white at home.

Other that that, whatever color the dart lands on the night before kickoff is fair game.

I always assumed the change to Orange was partly due to the Redmen becoming the Red Storm (around the same time?).

Orange doesn't really bother me anymore, and I see very little incentive for them to go through the trouble of bringing Orangemen back.

Nothing to do with "men" or "women" that follows the word Orange. When combined, i.e. Orangemen or Orangewomen, the PC police somehow link it to race. I've never understood it.
The change to just plain "Orange" was about having a consistent brand. Not PC and not race (race??)

And the term "Orange" was used before the change. People called them the Orangemen, Orangewomen, Lady Orange, The Orange... so the "change" was to officially use one term. Orange fit the bill.

The rest of the country has no idea why we are the Syracuse University Orange. "Why are you the Syracuse Orange? You don't grow oranges in NY, do you?"

The fact the we're "The Orange" AND we have Otto as our mascot AND we don't/can't/won't reference the Saltine Warrior in any way... it's weird and confusing to all but our rabid fans.

I'll bet most kids growing up in CNY right now have no idea why we're the Syracuse Orange and probably think it's because Otto is our (only) mascot and Otto looks like an orange. Talk about lost history and branding issues. Ugh.

Is this your opinion or do you know this as fact?

But we're not the Orangemen because of the Saltine Warrior, so making that connection shouldn't matter. This isn't like Chief Osceola and the Seminoles. The Orangemen name has nothing to do with Native Americans.

is it realistic to think when AD Urkel is gone in June that any of these changes could happen. It's a no brainer that the University bring back Orangemen, have orange in the uniform, unretire 44, etc. I haven't met one person who would object to these. I also think we need to incorporate the late 80s/early 90s uniform into the rotation. Since we have 100 diff versions why not have the version that was synonymous with winning?

The university gets in its own way cowtowing to Nike. Give em an ultimatum. There are other options and surely the other options haven't ruined brands like Bama or ND. I guess we're just a guinea pig for a shoe company.
