College Football Tradition/Ritual

I think that by eliminating "men" from the name that Syracuse is trying to be encompassing of all the teams represented by the university. In fact I am having trouble thinking of any other school that are _____men.
Up until recently Tennessee was the Volunteers and Lady Vols. They switched from Adidas to Nike and one of the first changes was to change all teams to Volunteers. The only exception is the ladies basketball team, they will remain Lady Vols. It's all about Nike's moronic assurance that it's better for marketing. I don't know one Tennessee fan that was happy with the change.

While tradition may be important to some, it's not to all. Depending on the person and their age, different traditions may be valued. Keep in mind, some people may view jingling keys or the wave as traditions that they might want to keep.
I think part of our problem is that we haven't established a tradition and stuck with it. Toomer's Corner remains well known because it's been a steady tradition since the late 60's or early 70's and if you don't grow up an Auburn fan but attend the university it's one you adopt. It links the past with the present.

We certainly need to be current and relevant and there are ways to do that, but we also need to maintain some things that link our present to our past. The two can coexist.

The rest of the country has no idea why we are the Syracuse University Orange. "Why are you the Syracuse Orange? You don't grow oranges in NY, do you?"

The fact the we're "The Orange" AND we have Otto as our mascot AND we don't/can't/won't reference the Saltine Warrior in any way... it's weird and confusing to all but our rabid fans.

I'll bet most kids growing up in CNY right now have no idea why we're the Syracuse Orange and probably think it's because Otto is our (only) mascot and Otto looks like an orange. Talk about lost history and branding issues. Ugh.
Do you think if they were called the "Orangemen" instead of the Orange the rest of the country would have an idea why? And why do we care? It is not an exciting story... we were Orangemen and are now Orange because the school chose orange as its main color.

is it realistic to think when AD Urkel is gone in June that any of these changes could happen. It's a no brainer that the University bring back Orangemen, have orange in the uniform, unretire 44, etc. I haven't met one person who would object to these. I also think we need to incorporate the late 80s/early 90s uniform into the rotation. Since we have 100 diff versions why not have the version that was synonymous with winning?

The university gets in its own way cowtowing to Nike. Give em an ultimatum. There are other options and surely the other options haven't ruined brands like Bama or ND. I guess we're just a guinea pig for a shoe company.
I like The Orange better than The Orangemen. I think it is just as traditional (Let's Go Orange is an old chant) And just because they had some different colored uniforms this past year it does not dictate the future colors. In fact, Gross said Nike was working on a predominantly orange football uniform for next year and we know the basketball team wears all-orange a lot.

Nobody is confused that Harvard is called the Crimson ...

Cornell is the Big Red...

Alabama is the Crimson Tide...

Stanford is the Cardinal...

although I can see where some people might be a little confused looking at our football uniforms.

When SU did the mascot review back in 1995(?) I wish they would've changed the official nickname to Syracuse Orange Pride (I.e., a pride of lions) and selected an orange lion as our mascot. You would still have the option to keep Otto - along with Orange Pride/Lion - for our kids' club and as a touchpoint to meet/greet fans at games.

This approach would help tie our somewhat-fragmented mascot/nickname history together with a vision toward the future by clearly defining who and what we are to all fans and potential fans.

Just my opinion. I'm sure many will disagree cuz that's what we do. :)

Is there not a standard now where the home team wears dark, and road wears white? Those of you calling for white home jerseys, I'm not sure you could.
I believe the rule was and am not sure if it still is, the home team can wear whatever they want they just need to give the road team 2 weeks notice so they can prepare to have their uniforms set for the game.

Good point.

Although, most of these examples at least have a mascot that is easily identifiable: Harvard=Pilgrim. Cornell=Big Red Bear. Bama=Elephant. Stanford=Tree

Nike was behind the change from Orangemen/women to Orange. Came with the SJ looking logo.

And I am Bill Orange!

The change to Orange doesn't bother me. It probably did at the time, but now I don't really care. What did bother me, even back then, was that god awful SJ logo in that dull shade of orange. I give Gross full credit on fixing that problem (a problem that was created under Jake's watch, people often forget that).

one of the most simplistic, yet appropriate nom de plum's we have on here.

Orange/Orangemen is one of the few things i dont really have an opinion on.

probably because i am so anti-PC that i want the Saltine Warrior back...and i wasnt even around for it.

or just be the Warriors.

this is a reinactment of what it wouldve looked like for the 'Warriors' as last years football team in the Dome.

What was wrong, other than the obvious, with the gladiator type saltine warrior we had when the Dome opened. Were there some offended Romans?

This is the way Liverpool has handled the Indian issue.

Anythings better than Otto, unless you're 8.

Yes. Even though I wish we still had the original Saltine Warrior (tastefully done - like Osceola, FSU's mascot), the gladiator - as Saltine Warrior - would be awesome.

I read that fans booed the original gladiator mascot at home games so the decision-makers moved away from it. "Briefly in 1978, a Roman-style gladiator reigned over the sites of sports battles, but he was soon both laughed and booed off the field."

Maybe fans wanted the original Saltine Warrior and booed to show their disdain of the university's decision to do away with him?

Anyone have any background info on the purge of the gladiator mascot?

Found this (brief mention and photo of gladiator):
Syracuse University's mascot: From dog to goat to warrior to gladiator to an orange

We need to go back to using Egnaro the Troll!!!!

Well, the article says the "original" Saltine Warrior didn't even start as a mascot until the 1950s so I thing it's about people not liking change. Yes, many hated the Roman Gladiator. It never really bothered me that much but I had friends who would cry about it as much as some now cry about Otto.

Are you saying that our 14 uniform combinations we wore over the span of 6 home games were declared intentions before the season started?

The College Rules require the home team to wear the dark jersey and the away team to wear the white jersey.

The home team can wear white at home provided that it announces its intention to do so, before the season begins.

I see nothing wrong with this logo. Forget the block S, let's go back to this classic.

It's a great character, but of course it will never happen.

It is important.

The act of planting trees on the Auburn campus is a national story.

For Syracuse University Football: (1) bring back the name "Orangemen"; (2) bring back the No. 44 Tradition; (3) bring back the TD Cannon/Bell; (4) bring back the Saltine Warrior Fight Song - change the lyrics if necessary; (5) bring back the old references "Bill Orange" and "Piety Hill"; (6) bring back the classic orange helmets, orange pants and home blue jerseys.

And while you're at it, bring back the TRAIN.
