College town smh

I’m sorry if our football team played like the hoops team did tonight against a very terrible opponent like that, football be torn down limb from limb.. instead it’s a big win omg we awesome. Happy we won and all. The double standard is sickening... have no illusions this isn’t a blustery northeast cbb or pro sports town wouldn’t be like that but one day I’d love to see the football team have compassion win or loss... that’s all have a nice night and 2020 is our year

I remember how much people hated that win over UNC in 2018...

There’s a double standard alright, but 180 degrees from what you are saying. I don’t know what internet you are on but the SU hoops program and players take FAR more abuse from fans, relative to the success of the program, than SU football does.

Basketball: Buddy scores 25 points.

Fan commentary: Buddy plays too much, he can’t do anything besides score, his shoelace came untied at the 8 minute mark…if that were any other player he would have been benched.

Football: Tommy fails to see 5 wide open receivers and dives into the turf untouched 3 yards short of a critical first down.

Fan commentary: He had a solid game; 186 passing yards. And anyway, he would have passed for over 400 if Taj had not shaken his head in frustration a few times. All is well. (note that this is not a knock on Tommy; it is satire)

Basketball: SU is one of the true legendary basketball programs and JB has never had a losing season in 43 years.

Fan commentary: the game has passed him by, the program is in freefall, he should be replaced by some guy I saw on TV the other night, he can’t recruit, everything he does is wrong, etc etc etc

Football: Dino had that 10 win season with a QB he didn’t recruit, but he has had three losing seasons in the past four, things are obviously tenuous enough that he fired both is OC and DC. Recruiting? Eh…TBD.

Fan commentary: We are obviously moving in the right direction, belief without evidence, all-in on Dino, God-love him he can do a post-game locker speech with the best of them, all he needs is a few more years.

Note that this is largely tongue-in-cheek but it ain’t that far off the mark in terms of how much of a leash SU fans give football vs basketball. Part of that is due to how spoiled they are by basketball and how emotionally beaten into submission they are by football. They are more likely to be totally apathetic about SU football rather than critical about SU football and hyper-critical about SU hoops rather than apathetic. So yeah, I totally disagree with your premise.

If more really dumb posts lead to these awesome responses I'm all for it.

To be fair...
I think the post misses the mark in comparing the 2 sports. But it does speak to the frustration and ongoing challenges the football program faces. Basketball is still king because of the recent and longer term success.
SU is fortunate to have The Dome as a venue still drawing huge hoops crowds(and revenue). This offsets the typical football is anointed king at most similar schools mentality. Football revenue is still vitally critical to the sports programs overall. And let’s hope the trend to upgrading and spending back into facilities/coaches salaries, etc...for football especially starts to lead to sustained success. Or the start of a run of success.
The greatest concern for both is and will continue to be recruiting. Hoops is trending in right direction. They needs bigs moving forward who can contribute immediately and further develop what they have.
Football frustratingly has been challenged and needs to continue to improve recruiting overall. Let’s hope the staffing stabilizes and gets such on track.
If nothing else, fans are obviously passionate about both programs. Wins should be celebrated and losses are obviously frustrating. Onward to the next game Tuesday. A win is a win and as long as no one gets hurt and misses time going forward, it’s a good win.

M
Syracuse Basketball is about to have its 50th consecutive winning season.

Syracuse Football has only made 6 bowl games since 2000.

I love SU football but Basketball is the top program at SU and the standard for all of SU sports to reach.
Men's Lax says, "How you doin?"

I have agreed with everything Dick in Michigan has ever posted.

Oh, for the glorious years of 1987-2001, when both FB and BB were strong enough to withstand the microscope. (FB for underperforming their talent level and BB for going on probation).
