Comments about the chat room...

I've read with interest several recent comments about the chat room being a "terrible place" because of posts by those experiencing a meltdown or worse. Each chat room I have participated in this year has been pretty civilized, including the one when we were struggling (to say the least) with Miami last Saturday. Indeed, with the exception of one poster (who was quickly evicted and banned), it was actually an interesting and thoughtful discussion.

I realize the difference in tone may be due to the presence of a moderator (in last Saturday's case, me) who will not tolerate posts such as "CJ Fair is full of crap" (the line that got said poster banished).

Unfortunately there cannot always be a moderator there because some times we are all at the game. But I do promise you that rooms with a moderator present can be a very interesting and rewarding way to watch a game with serious SU fans.

PS, I plan to be in the chat room tonight
try being in it for the Nova game.

I dislike the rampant negativity that occurs, even on a good day. If I can't control myself, I yell at the TV. I don't subject the chat room to my irrational rants. But I'm trying to get used to it.

Totally me as well. I yell at the TV and that dissipates it. Once upon a time these yells were curse words but now with the kids around they are kind of unintelligible battle cries.

Agreed especially on your second paragraph/point. Some posters just need a vent I know I do sometimes and you can tell some guys like Iommi can really get frustrated when Syracuse is not playing well. I dont use the chat for every game but its nice to go in there and have someone who can feel your pain or enjoy the win with you, Last Saturday it was classic how Iommi called the exact Miami possesion and deep three the second Syracuse squandered a chance to take the lead late in the second half. Its a comforting feeling when others know the classic Syracuse moments each game.

Not sure if this is the same moment, but I was watching with a friend who is a Miami alum. They cut it to one or two in the 2nd half and we (obviously) didn't score and I said "you're going to hit a 3 and take the lead." It took a couple possessions but eventually they hit a 3 and took the lead.

It's funny how predictable some events are with this team over years; but the other thing we should all know is to never count them out. A lot more wins than losses from 08-09 to now.

No those days are pretty much long over. People do get frustrated for sure but I havent heard one fire JB comment this year or at least not yet. I think people realize this team can comeback so there is a little less panic when we get down then before. I would recommend you give it another shot just keep in mind that a lot of posters live and die with Syracuse athletics and for many of them this is there only place to vent when things start going South. All that being said its no where near as bad as it used to be.

The nova game was a bit like that. No fire JB but a few melt downs with how we started. There were a few calm heads like dasher but I thought the chat room may implode for a few.

Your probably talking about the same made three but he literally called right after SU turned it over. You are so spot on about how predictable some events are with this team and SU bball in general. Half the chat room called that Nova banked 3 with 1 second left, you just knew they were makign some crazy shot.

Yeah your right the Nova start did not go well and it got a little dark in there, but it stayed out of the danger zone and with Dasher and a few others the ship was righted. When your spoiled like SU fans have been the past couple of years it doesnt take much for an implode sometimes.

I think the all time lowpoint for the chat room was the 6OT game that we won.

Every bad play in every overtime generated dozens of "game over" comments and hand wringing about how we were doomed. So frustrating. I'll never forget--it was several overtimes in, and uconn hits a three to start the OT session, and one prominent poster declared "game over--might as well start the bus." Seriously? There's 4:42 seconds left to go...

Jeremy, I appreciate your efforts defending the chatrooms. I just find it difficult to believe that its changed much. I've popped in from time to time [more during football season], and it seemed pretty doom-n-gloom every time, which usually results in me bailing out after 10 minutes or so. Doesn't seem that different than it was in the past to me.

The only 2 issues I have about the chatroom are
1. My mass misspelling of words cause I am watching the tv while typing.

2. People getting their feed faster than me. Spoiler alert.

I get the meltdowns, I melt down all the time.

I cant really speak for the football chats as I was either at the games or out watching them somewhere so I will certainly take your word for it that it wasnt shangra la in there. (and based on the scores of some games Gtech, FSU your probably putting it lightly.)

Again I am not saying that its suddenly become a fine lot tailgate in there especially when were losing but this year it does seem better then some of the off the wall crap the past few years. But again I would say give it a shot if its seems to much like previous years hit that X as fast as you can.

I have only been on a few and was on and off due to doing other things at the time including paying attention to the game. I will say I have often strayed away simply due to so many comments being made about how bad the chatrooms have been. Those that I have attended have seemed to be pretty well with the still occassional venting about certain players sucking etc.

LOL! I rarely even venture over to the football board, let alone the chatroom during an actual game.

I think one thing that does happen is that when a player is struggling posters tend to vent there frustration at the player. I have been guilty of this myself. I love Keita but when he is having one of those games where he has 1 rebound in 18 minutes and keeps slapping at the ball instead of grabbing it I want to put my face through the television. In order to avoid the costs of plastic surgery I will instead go to my "Keita is killing us" remark in the chatroom.

How does anyone find the time to post, watch the game, take notes so you can respond intelligently to all the fine post game reports, and drink beer all at the same time? Sheesh.

Seriously though, it tends to take away from the game, especially when I get drawn into a pissing match. I noticed during one of the last games that Coach Orange was in there and I really like his comments. If he's in there, I'll watch just to get his perspective.

And I'm usually the guy agreeing with you while pulling my hair out.

True - I generally have found your comments fairly vanilla in that regard and hardly as coming off as vindictive so I wasn't thinking immediately of things you have said. Not that it matters but I don't recall who some of those who have gone on the attack and as I said it doesn't matter.

Hey, remember the old days on syr.com, with HOTSAUCE and trapicana, et al? :bat:

I second this. Love CO's commentary and knowledge of the game when he is in there.

Right? And because they were mentioned I cannot in good conscience like your post. I'll save it for later.

Look it takes not only year round training but years of specialized training. Sometimes it pays off like for the 6OT game when the adrenaline allows you to stay up past your buzz post till 4:30 am have an hour of good SU bball dreams and then spend all day at work basking in the glow and posting some more.

try doing that on your phone as well. I have hilariously tried the chatroom on my phone and gave up. Moves too fast and the keyboard is slow.
