230 yard improvement in the defense. only gave up 450 and 275 on the ground this time!

this is not relevant to anything but i don't know why i love this so much

I'm trying to remember a meathead decision out of Gerg while at SU but don't remember enough games close enough for that to have been possible.

he's unworthy of the title. it was something he aspired to.

there's always the paul chiara game against iowa

Looking back, I'm just happy for him that he didn't call for the field goal attempt on 4th down.

Let's see: 7th and goal comes to mind...

...I still remember sitting in the Dome thinking "He cant give it to Chiara again right?" That moment I equate to having someone line up and kick you in the nuts repeatedly.

i'm in such a great mood today - the football gods smiled upon me by making the other coach kick a worthless field goal

i was downright giddy when rivera sent the kicker in

God, I can't believe Paul Chiara was a scholarship running back here. We had some awful talent those years.

punting on 3rd down..

You know that other past SU coaches did that also right?

Mostly Fiammetta on that last drive:

S 1-G I-02 FIAMMETTA,Tony rush for 1 yard to the IOWA1 (Iewbema, Ken).
S 2-G I-01 FIAMMETTA,Tony rush for loss of 1 yard to the IOWA2 (Iewbema, Ken).
S 3-G I-02 PENALTY IOWA pass interference 0 yards to the IOWA2, 1ST DOWN SYRACUSE.
S 1-G I-02 FIAMMETTA,Tony rush for 1 yard to the IOWA1 (Iewbema, Ken).
S 2-G I-01 FIAMMETTA,Tony rush for no gain to the IOWA1 (King, Mitch).
S 3-G I-01 PATTERSON,P. rush for no gain to the IOWA1 (Miles, Edmond;Paschal, M.).
S 4-G I-01 CHIARA,Paul rush for no gain to the IOWA1 (Iewbema, Ken).

Usually a quick though...right?

True. Daryl Johnston comes to mind. But there have also been a couple other times where it wasn't a quick kick.

Wouldn't the question be why does a team that had Curtis Brinkley, Delone Carter, and Tony Fiametta have Paul Chiara getting carries? I don't know if that's awful.

Chiara might not have been a D-1 RB, but he ended up being an okay safety that got a FA contract out of the deal.

Fiametta did get the ball. Chiara got it once on that series and 3 times in the game.

Honestly got a little sick watching this all the way through.

Okay, Brinkley and Delone both played in that game, were they hurt at the end? Because unless they weren't available it isn't so much a question of talent on the team as usage of that talent.

Those uniforms make me sicker.
my god was that painful to watch again, i was at game. how bad was that O line. did you see where patterson threw the ball on the pass to feron, god he was awful.

Looking back how does a team with Curtis Brinkley, Delone Carter, Tony Fiametta, Mike Williams, Taj Smith and Ryan Durand ends as horrible as it was.

Is there a reason why Curtis Brinkley wasn’t in there at the end?
“I really don’t know. How it happened, I don’t know. We were to get personnel and it turned out it was Paul (Chiara). Paul has got to score. He got the handoff and he has to score.”

Fourth and one, why did you go with Paul Chiara?
“We made choices. If we get it done, it’s a great decision and if we don’t, then you question it. We had a plan by changing the formation and using different personnel. We changed the motion and the ground play had been good to this point. They did a good job and give them credit. I’m not big on thinking all that we could have done. We could have a run sneak down there too but we decided not to. So, believe me, we had all the chances.”

Why didn’t you sneak with Perry Patterson down there?
“We didn’t feel good about it. We felt that the way they were set up and the way they were lined up, they were sitting there waiting for us. We figured we would set it up and go with the momentum and we did.
