Cornell Gameday...

if they beat unc they will still get in. they have two top 10 wins. it's still a good resume

lose to unc though and all bets are off

I have to imagine they lost out on a home game, at the very least. I have my doubts about the UNC game. Will be very telling if they can’t get up for that one.

Honestly no words to describe that display of crap. The team just seemed to fall apart after March was escorted out. Offense slowed down to the point they couldn’t do anything, which put more pressure on the defense who then started to fall apart.

Enough milking the clock, the offense seems to make more mistakes and poor decisions when trying to rush the offensive set at 25 seconds than actually playing at a high tempo.

Can we start sitting players who can’t grasp clearing, especially at this level? How many times do we have to watch someone run into doubles and triples? Having a tough time understanding why it’s such a fiasco against the ride.

Defense seems to be Jekyll and Hyde. Either we get brick wall Mark and no help in front of him or defense plays well but Mark can’t stop a beach ball. I think Duke has been the only game we’ve gotten brick wall Mark with great defensive play.

Now they’ve backed themselves against the wall. Have to at least win one against Virginia or North Carolina to keep tournament hopes alive.

This was game gait had chance to prove what he can do without his OC n it didn’t look well. Offense looked confused didn’t have plan of attack. But the missed open looks is horrible for D1 guys. Well this season def just got interesting. Have to win unc no doubt and maby uva for seed.
Why would a head coach have to prove he can win without an offensive coordinator? That's dumb.

I think we can beat UNC and UVA.

Mental toughness seems to be the biggest issue with this team. They seem to wilt in high pressure situations and no one from offense through goalie seems able to step up and be a game changer at critical times. The most glaring weakness in my mind is the offense - lots of razzle dazzle and skill when things are easy but they lack real physical and mental grit to execute when crunch time comes.

Why would a head coach have to prove he can win without an offensive coordinator? That's dumb.

UNC yes. I think UVA is too good. Tiffany will expose our weaknesses.

I think they can too, but do I have much confidence right now that's a different question.

A while ago, I said the Syracuse team that beat Duke was a "grown-up team." I'm rethinking that.

Agreed, the bigger concern isn't that they lost to Cornell it's how they lost and that in year 3 under Gait its the same issues plaguing this team over and over and over.

First of blowing a 7 goal lead twice isn't something a top 5 team does, sorry it just isn't. Let me know the next time UVA or ND or Duke does it or Maryland.

It's zero surprise Cornell (who is a good riding team) went to a 10 man in the second half. As expected SU looked like it had never seen one before and kept turning the ball over and gave up one of the most ridiculous goals of all time to have the game tied at 19. It's year 3, at what point are we gonna ya know have a plan against a 10 man beyond losing our minds?

The offense in the second half was putrid but it continues the pattern of SU haveing a quarter + where they just look absolutely lost offensively. It's happened every game save for maybe Vermont and Duke. They just look beyond lost, they had a man up late where they nearly threw it away and got the call to keep it and then proceeded to throw it away 10 seconds later. I understand SU isn't overflowing with attack options but at what point do you go to someone anyone else over Mule. Dude was 0 for the century shooting the ball despite multiple great looks and had some of the worst turnovers I have ever seen. He was literally just standing there with the ball and it just rolled out of his stick, what the F?? You have a 5 star frosh on the bench who just scored multiple goals against Hobart, how about ya know playing him? To keep running the same guys out there in the 2nd half when the O was a mess made no sense. Sit Mule and give Stevens a break and let's see someone else for a run or 2 or bump Birt to attack, do something.

You also have Joey playing one of his better shooting game and SU just goes completely away from him. Cornell wasn't even shutting him off, why wasn't he initiating??

Defensively they wre let down by all the man ups and god awful trunovers but again the short sticks not named Rice were a constant issue and SU didn't stop the knowns. When Long gets a short on him swithc it the first chance you get, Levine can't cover him on one, Also enough already with the man down specialty unit crap, their a total liability in the six on six after the penalty and in clearing, get a regular unit out there with 1 or 2 bench guys you like. This isn't a fun summer league where everyone has to play, enough already.

Overall this loss tells me Gait as the HC is still very much in question, this is a game you can't lose in year 3 with this team and Cornell's shortcomings, sorry full stop.

Yes and a 16-10 lead in the 3rd.
Good lord….. I checked the score around that time after a text from buddy post Spallina goal and assumed it was in great shape.

Beat UNC and UVA.

3-1 makes us the #2 seed in the ACCT.

Which means we can rack up one more win before seeing ND again.

The opera ain't over yet, but the fat #77 ref is singing.

I wouldn't feel quite so bad if this was the Cornell team during the Jeff Teat years that came back on us.

Good thing they have a week and a half to recover from this debacle.

Forget UVA, season hinges on UNC now. Lose that game SU is gonna miss not only the ACC tourney (unless Duke can't continue its reg season dominance of UVA) but probably needs to beat UVA to make the NCAA tourney. This was a bad as loss as you could have had for a about a dozen reasons.

The game could have been saved at 7:35 of the 4th up 2 goals. Kelleher took that bad cross check. About 10 seconds into a 1:00 pp Hiltz tries a skip for no reason that is deflected (Stevens dove after it like a dope - cant fault the hustle though). We get the ball back and 10 seconds later Stevens throws it away. Defense was gassed and man up had a chance to put a little cushion between us. Inexcusable stuff. Was compounded later by Hiltz just straight missing a pass, Mule dropping the ball, and then English throwing a ridiculous skip to X in OT that skidded out of bounds (on top of some poor shooting).

Defense was a slide happy, not getting there, mess. (Worse I have seen since 2nd half Army/1st half JHU).

Players have to make winning plays.

Your right but I think there was less then 7:35 to go or at least it felt like it. That whole sequence was an absolute mess and I am pretty sure SU got called for like their third offsides shortly thereafter leading to a Cornell goal.

Hard Hitting Analysis:

- I’m trying to tell myself this was karma for 2009. It’s like watching the same game but flipping teams - and it’s not as fun this time around.

- I knew we wouldn’t win in OT. I didn’t even need to watch. I get a sense that this TALENTED team, that plays hard, just can’t get it done like it’s inevitable. It’s incredibly bizarre.

- Mason Kohn was great tonight and Will Mark made some unreal saves at the end. Feel badly for these guys - they did everything in their power to give us opportunities and keep us in the game.

- We don’t have an offensive player that DEMANDS the ball at the end of the game or when things are going south. I think Rhoa is the biggest alpha on the team - kid seems fearless.

- I don’t feel like we’re doing this concept (that coaches are supposed to help with) - it’s called “improving”. It means to get better for those unfamiliar with the term. The amount of silly turnovers, penalties, and failed clears is inexcusable.

- Tonight feels like rock bottom…crazy to think losing by one is that bad but this team is too talented for this type of collapse. Hopefully there’s leadership on the team - not making the post season with this roster is too depressing to contemplate.

Two other quick points - I know OT's can be flukey but even by the law of averages SU should have won one by now. Save for the Thomson shot which got stonewalled SU in OT is playing like there's 11:23 in the 2nd quarter. Gait doesn't call a timeout on either initial possession and SU had 2 if not 3 brutal looks with plenty of time left.

Second at what point are we going to figure out how to sub in and off and avoid an off-sides call. SU has to have been called for about 15 or 16 offsides this year and I think their opponents maybe 3 to 5. We had at least 3 tonight including at least 1 that led to a penalty. Much like the clearing against a tough ride and 10 man when exactly is this gonna get cleared up, year 7??? Would be nice if someone in the media would actually ask a tough question for a change instead softball after softball.

I honestly don’t know how you recover from this. It definitely rates as one of worst losses in Cuse history of any sport.

Agree on Kohn and Mark, thought both played great. Mark probably wants a couple back but man he made some great saves. Kohn another great game including both faceoffs in OT, hats off to him.

Your second point I think is spot on. The Hopkins game notwithstanding it does feel like that. Even with that lead and the ball with under a minute you knew Cornell would at least tie it. Same for OT, you knew SU would find away not to win. Very very bizarre.

I think the defense has improved but I think offensively we have not and the clearing issues are just as bad as they were against Colgate. I think some of that is this awful schedule SU came up with. Playing Cornell three days after ND and 3 games in 10 day again made zero sense. IF both teams can't make a reasonable date work try again next year. Instead SU jams this game in and now their off this Sat and the 27th, makes no Fn sense.

Agree about that Alpha player, we don't have it. Spallina had a very good game but we went away from him in the 2nd half. Way to much Mule and Stevens in the 2nd half despite both being non factors offensively and Mule a hot mess. Needed someone else to initiate with Mule and Thomson really unable to beat short stick match ups. I've been screaming for another dodger at attack all season its clear March and Gait won't make any changes, for whatever reasons. If you thought Desko was stubborn at making moves, this is like Desko on steroids.

Agreed but we got Joey the ball what once in both OT's and that one time he put a dime on Thomson who got stoned on a point blank look. Hard to put the blame on him, why weren't we letting him initiate?
Gait showed no confidence in Joey

March was obviously gone but Gary is the HC, where was the adjustments or something in the 4th when this O ground to a halt? How about showing us a designed play in OT for a game you have to have or something. I said it earlier but the CEO HC mentality might work in the women's game but it's unlikely to work at this level in the mens game.

NO idea if they will to be honest. UNC is gonna be desperate next week ( I can't see them beating UVA Sat) and they have the 1-2 punch at the X like we do. Their offense isn't nearly as good as Cornell's but their defense is way better then the one we saw tonight. At this point nothing would surprise me.

Whoever gets the postgame presser just recap why March got tossed and why we suck again.
