Cornell Postgame

My biggest takeaway from the game is ———. Are we 100% sure Red gets a third year?
You or anyone else literally don’t need to ask this ever again. Yes he’s coming back for year 3 no matter what. (Unless someone throws a chair at him lol jk)

Watching Reds post game and not a single question about point guard play. How is that possible?
Edit: was asked and completely glossed over what he is doing and putting it on the rest of the team. Is Red his dad or something? Wow.
So far Red has been a true players’ coach and hasn’t called anyone out like that. However this isn’t the guy to hitch your wagon to. Eye test he’s clearly overwhelmed and no way the analytics we’ve apparently beefed up support him either.

What’s most disappointing is he was an all conference defender and has offered nothing on that end. Put him in a 10-15 minute reserve guard role and let him build his confidence that way.

Only thing I would nit pick on is the 10 to 15 minutes. I think that is too many. Despite what Red said in the Post game, the kid is adding little to nothing and the longer he stays with JC, the worse it will be for the team, Red and JC.

I'm not a "Red doesn't deserve a third year" guy but the Jaquan Carlos situation is baffling to me. He keeps saying he wants Carlos to distribute the ball but he isn't even doing that. And he is not playing defense.

He’s going to make the change don’t worry. This game proved that Elijah can play and he needed this game to show Red he can handle some tense situational ball too. That 3 he made on the break after the block was courageous lol but he made it. Thats big time

Carlos seems to be running away from the ball at times and going to the corner where he is useless because he can’t shoot threes. Contrary to what Red said in his presser Carlos is not getting guys open looks. And on defense, his defensive field goal percentage against on three-pointers must be sky high. Guys are just shooting over him with ease.

Not to mention the next time he fights over a screen will be the first.

Plus/Minus was telling (although I didn’t think Davis was on the court for the early bloodbath)

FREEMAN, DONNIE +6
STARLING, JJ +1
BELL, CHRIS -16
CARLOS, JAQUAN -10
DAVIS, JYARE -9
CUFFE, JR., KYLE +7
TAYLOR, LUCAS +22
MAJSTOROVIC, PETAR +21
MOORE, ELIJAH +26
LAMPKIN, EDDIE +2

I think (I could of course, be wrong, of course) that Red envisioned a deep squad where he could platoon the players, have a fast paced offense, be able to pressure opponents, thrive in transition, be unselfish, tiring out opponents by having fresh legs and energy not just in games, but into the late season. I think he brought in players to actually play, believing that depth would be a real factor in our games. Remember JB didn’t use all his scholarships knowing that 8 players would probably play most of the minutes in the season. The other 2 or 3 players would get just early season minutes saving one or 2 for walkons and he was criticized here for his short rotation. It looks like Red wanted to change up things, hoping to keep the entire team engaged, motivated and working hard with them knowing that they would play a role with decent minutes. He then could use varied matchups dependent on the opponent too. Sadly so far it hasn’t clicked with the kids. Under JB there was just 13 scholarships, now there are 15.

That’s as of now. There’s a lot of season left and things can change.

FWIW, Tennessee covered a 42-spread tonight vs.Tennesee-Martin. I'll guess we'll be 12 point underdogs.
I’m thinking it might be more than 12. Cuse was around a 10 point underdog on neutral court vs Texas and Texas Tech. A true road game at a much better Tennessee team has to be worth more than 2 points.

I thought it was a bad shot and we should have taken more time off the clock. I don't think we had anybody underneath to rebound a miss either. It was one of those, "No, no, no, Yes!" shots. It took a lot of cajones for the freshman to take it. The way his night was going it's no surprise he hit it.

wow, could it be as high as +15, that shows how far we have fallen, it's almost like a mid-major going in there.

Well, by definition a two way player has to contribute on offense. Otherwise he’s a one way player, d only.
I agree, and until tonight I wasn't sure if he could score like at all. Not a lot of shots tonight either but 3-5 from the field with some free throws and 9pts is about all he should need to be doing most nights.
