That's my thought as well. He needs a lot of minutes to develop. Practice time isn't the same as game experience.

If he comes back by the Uconn game for gameday (Feb 25) he will be fine then he will have Big East Tourney as well. Rak needs more game experience then Melo does

He won't be back, at least not this year. Such is life.

That is definitely an opinion because that final final verdict has not been made yet.

"could take a while" - reeks of NCAA Clearinghouse to me

why do so many people say clearinghouse? isn't that for initial eligibility for a frosh or xfer? i don't think midway thru your 2nd year a course you took in hs would be called into question.

Ok- maybe Clearinghouse was a bad choice, but whats the implication that the NCAA still has to review & approve any decision?

Well, NCAA stuff in general (e.g. the UConn kid a few weeks ago)

Someone with a supposed connection to the situation commented on syracuse.com that there was some kind of cheating ring in one of the classes he took. According to him, everyone had to retake the final exam and an investigation is underway. He claims Fab wasn't necessarily a part of the cheating ring, but his eligibility is pending the investigation and whether or not he passed the retake. For all I know this guy could be completely clueless. Has anyone else heard anything like this? I think it looks good that he's practicing with the team and even better that he's early to practice. If he had a bunch of work to make up, I'd think getting that work done would preclude practicing.:noidea:

Cheating ring would have been already confirmed by other people who heard from friends in that class who were also implicated. I don't believe for a second that everyone in that class is staying quiet that Melo was taking the course with them.

i think the most important word is 'could'...if the decision moves faster it could be quicker, if the decision is slower it could be a while. Could is just a word stating the source really has no idea.

Also who are the sources? Someone could have taken a source from a message board. A direct source would most likely have an answer.

syracuse.com. that's all you need to know.

Haha, I definitely thought about that. Orangeyes did post a thread earlier saying he had heard the same rumor. He also said he heard 4 other rumors that are completely different, fwiw.

It has nothing to do with cheating, that has been stated several times.

If it is not cheating - but is academics, how did the staff allow it to happen? The first couple of years on campus these guys are being put into classes they can handle and the staff should be tracking ever class. It is not that hard with the resources available. I don't get how they lost sight of a potential problem.

What a black-eye this will be if its a preventable academic issue. Shame on the staff if so. I don't care if he goes to Chuck's and pounds pitchers nightly but make sure his ass is in class and handing in papers. Not to be lost, this is an english as second language student and further the BF dark cloud is hanging over the program so if that is all it is all I can say is wow.

Can anyone name any other high profile players this has happened to? Im 28 and ive literally never heard of some team with a #1 ranking losing a 1st round draft pick to academics....

I think the fact that its in-season is what it so troubling. I'm sure guys have flunked out of school or whatever, but I feel like it doesn't happen in the middle of the season. I'm sure someone will prove me wrong though

40 and I can't think of a top-25 program losing a top player mid-season due to academics

BF making sure the ballboy experience had a 'happy ending'
LF testing players 'vertical' under the covers
Fab becoming first player from high profile team academically ineligible in the midst of a dream season

Its all surreal, but unfortunately real.

That is one opinion, but it happens to be wrong. If we want to reach our potential this year we need some offense from the center position. Melo is not yet at a point where we get consistent offense from him, the way he has been developing there is a decent chance that by the end of the season we are...kind of like the way the light went on for Seikaly in 87. It won't happen if he isn't playing though and there is no way that Rak will reach the point that Melo could this season.

Melo is already developed enough where we can win a championship with him at center as is. Can he improve a lot yes because he has great potential. But what happens if Melo get's in foul trouble in the tournament? We need someone to step in and play, Rak needs more time so he can be that guy.

Maybe it's a combination of the two - a class with a major project due at the end of the semester where he misunderstood the requirements due to language issues. If the project was going good as far as Fab knew, the problem wouldn't have been discovered until late when he turned it in. Add in some begging for a second chance to do it right and there you go. Does the academic support staff check work or just verify that it's being done?

Doesn't explain why he'd be at practice/Chipotles/airports instead of spending all his time to address this, but I suppose there could be components that he could only work on during certain hours or in conjunction with someone else's schedule, like if there are survey's involved, etc.
