Seems like a plausible scenario . It is always very advantages to have assistant coaches with previous head coaching experience .

No, they already have one.

I assume Couscous means starting in fall 2017. They have an interim DC for now who will more than likely carry out 2016.

Would be interesting. What would a Shafer D look like with ND talent? How much say would he have hiring assts?

Yes that is what I meant . I should have worded the title better.

That is exactly my thinking . Practically an entire defense of 4 star athletes .

You think he wants that headache?

80,000 people just chanted Fire VanGorder for an extended period of time.

Well , I can understand Syracuse's defense having huge problems stopping teams , the talent is just not there . But UND , they are stocked everywhere with 4 stars and that defense was atrocious . They should of chanted something worse .

Whenever he gets back into coaching, I think he wants to go where it's a good fit and he likes working with the other coaches. That may not be ND, who knows? I don't think money is his highest priority. I hope he goes somewhere where he can be successful and stays a long time.

I heard on a college FB talk show yesterday that ND has three defensive coaches who have all been a DC at some point in their career. They're deep in coaching.

I heard on another college FB talk show that the key problem at ND is Kelly has fostered an atmosphere of fear, such that players are afraid to say 'I don't understand coach' yet alone feel like they've got the security to ever make a single mistake or risk getting their head chopped off. Especially on defense, it was a horrible teaching environment. Players simply weren't learning their roles.

I wouldn't go coach somewhere that they treat people like Kelly just did ... I guess if I had the ego to want to make a name at a school like Notre Dame but I don't see HCSS as that kind of guy.

HE doesn't strike me as a guy who wants to work for a raving lunatic on thin ice.

He has worked for a raving lunatic before...Jim Harbaugh. Granted Jim's job wasn't on the line but I think Scott can work for a raving lunatic.

Good luck to Scott Shafer in his future endeavors. He was a good man just not a head coach. He could become a P5 level defensive coordinator. I personally don't like his style of defense but too each their own. I doubt Brian Kelly will put his job security on the line with Scott Shafer next year.

I wouldn't rule him out at becoming an actual assistant at Pitt if a spot on the staff opens up.

Yes, he learned a lot when he took the job as the DC of Michigan under Rich Rod. His next job will be as a DC under someone he has worked with before, or I could see him taking a job as a HC at a smaller school.

To make a little under $1 million per year? Yeah, I could get yelled at for that.

Not me. Not when I could get a job at another place for roughly equivalent $.

Remember Shafer has already been on a staff at a name school that wasn't a fit with the other coaches.

I think his psychosis is different than Kelly's. He's more like your crazy buddy that jumps off the roof of the house into the pool kinda crazy.

Also a lunatic on the way up as opposed to maybe on the way out.

Agree with fandu---Different types of lunatics as well.. Both crazy but in different ways. Gun to my head I would much rather work for Harbaugh from what I see.

Harbaugh is doing 100 push ups during practice and putting spikes on to throw the 1st pitch out at Cubs games, Kelly is blowing a gasket and screaming at the guy at Starbucks for a bad Latte

Didnt HCSS say he was blinded by the bright lights when he got the Michigan job? That it was high stress, and ultimatley he hated it. I swear he said this in an interview. I think he's done playing for lunatics in high prifile jobs. The guy has made more money than he has ever dreamed of, is set for life, if he takes a new job, it will be be something lower key.

When you've got all the money you need, why sacrifice your quality of life for a little more by working 80 hour weeks under a miserable character?

College football's a kind of sad enterprise.

I'm sure Shafer's going to want to coach again, and he'll probably be wise enough to avoid that kind of high-profile headache.
