Coverage Was Disappointing ?

So not only does he need on-the-job coaching training and training on how to utilize the transfer portal, but he also needs media training too?

Is he the only high Division I coach who struggles in every single one of these areas, and should literally get a failing grade in all three?

The end can't come soon enough.

I mean other than that...

Seriously how can you be a good coach if you are not a good communicator.
I would think communication is key to teaching your players.
Bingo. Strong communication is absolute must to recruit and teach successfully (i.e., persuade).

Gonna be honest here. Babers got fired and rightfully so but Babers seemed like a great guy and was very likable as a person.

Red might be a great guy but he is far from likable if I’m being honest. This team was a tough watch and Autry is a tough watch/listen on top of that. He’s not easy to root for

JB came out a month-and-half ago and tried to move the goalposts for him and a lot of fans didn't buy it.

Red's clearly irritated about that and likely realizing how hard he now has it as a coach on the hotseat with a make or break year next year.

Boo hoo... you either wear your big boy pants or you don't.

This is the Mayo/Pats situation all over again. You theoretically could bring them back and try to work with what they have, but they keep shooting themselves in the foot in the media, with their coaching decisions, and having to walk back comments.

Red is in WAY over his head. There's no way back here. Cut bait now.

I hope he's here for 20 years.

Basketball is well on its way to being a total niche sport, and the program's relevance is so low that the national media is unlikely to ever care about Red's success, or lack thereof. Thus, the only resistance would come from Mike and Donna, and we've seen the media stifling and vindictive approach the university has taken to guys like Axe. So, bottom line, Red is treated with veritable kid gloves.

I agree 100% on this. To me I think Wildhack knows Red is not the guy. I think Wildhack has known it since the beginning of the season tbh. When you barely beat LeMoyne and Colgate. You had a terrible ACC this year and we came in 14th….this is Syracuse basketball and Wildhack is as big of a Syracuse basketball fan and supporter as many of us. I truly think Wildhack is being told from people above him to give him one more season. If it was Wildhack’s decision alone, I think Red would have been gone today.

This all day^^^^

Would think he was also told by KS/BOT that the whales would not be tapped for the buyout for another year.

Mayo was far worse with the media. They literally had to walk back things he blurted out in press conferences four times.

But, there are a lot of discouraging parallels between Mayo's and Red's seasons. Just like there were a lot of parallels between Belichick's and Boeheim's final years.

The Pats are comfortable being a professional sports team, however, and acting accordingly. SU is still grappling with that.

It’s so clearly time to move on and I think even Autry knows it. Next year will be a lame duck. The contract given to him by the university is one of the worst I’ve seen in sports. He had zero leverage and fleeced Wildhack and the BOT.

For Autry to go up there and carry himself like that, on the verge of tears are you kidding me? Could you ever see JB crying or on the verge of tears in a press conference after a loss??? Think about that. Adrian is in over his head as. Power 4 D1 head coach. SMU shut down Lampkin and Red had no plan in place to address that. We over-pass on offense, opting for acrobatic, high difficulty two's when we need threes. It's mind blowing

He's not cut out for this and for him to refuse to answer that last question and not send a message to the fan base to try and reassure us that everything is under control and they have a plan is pathetic and speaks volumes. He's a guard position coach not a D1 head coach. There is another year of this on the horizon and it sucks knowing this. Wildhack needs to go.
NO - Autry needs to go!

Sometimes great coaches are bad speakers, and great speakers are bad coaches.

Babers talked a great game. Couldn't coach one.

Maybe we'll have Kline address the media after every game next season?

I don’t think that’s fair to Dino. He couldn’t recruit depth and his teams fell off a cliff, and he earned his firing, but he had some wonderful wins. Everything in years 1 and 2 with Dino pointed to the success of year 3. I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong about Red if we finish 15th next year in the final rankings.

FWIW, there is no link between press conference aptitude and communication skill with players.

Example #1:
R.b5e4e3688c9db9ff48d288270f1cc373

Not ideal. A couple things:

“Coverage” = Media (Not fans). I think it’s unfair to say he’s unhappy with the fans, by this statement. Not a great look, however given the time and place. Does come off as a bit tone deaf.

I have more of an issue with refusing to answer the absolute softball question “what do you say to the fan base”.

I mean holy cow, this is an open mic to get your message across!! It’s basic PR.

“The fans are disappointed, the staff is disappointed, the school is dissatisfied and I’m disappointed. We’re going to get it right. We have a solid class coming in. We”re going to pound the portal for veteran players. We’re going to have a familiar face around the program that can help raise our profile and help in NIL. There’s a lot to be optimistic about, but it starts with me. I take responsibility for our record, and I take responsibility for getting it right”.

He needs to get some basic media training. He basically answered all the tough questions and passed on the one question where there was no wrong answer.

The fact that we have a coach who needs basic media training is insane. We are(were) a premium program with a rich history, so having a coach so inept at basic media duties, lacking any ability to inspire and being constantly so behind in everything in the current landscape is unacceptable.

2018 and upsets against Clemson. Babers was in the job too long but I can't say his entire tenure was a disaster

Belief without evidence?

That last question is so weird. It wasn't even a hard or pointed question it's handing a platter to Red to give the fan a positive and hopeful message and he blew it like missing a free throw intentionally.

It's almost comical with his non answer. Like the kid from Different Strokes with his arms crossed angry "bit goin to say nothing!!!" comical.

He is done and spent, checked out mentally.
