Coverage Was Disappointing ?

The fact that we have a coach who needs basic media training is insane. We are(were) a premium program with a rich history, so having a coach so inept at basic media duties, lacking any ability to inspire and being constantly so behind in everything in the current landscape is unacceptable.

Is anyone really surprised, though? Red [and a couple of the ACs] have partial responsibility for the decline over JB's final eight years.

It was wishful thinking to expect an inexperienced, unproven, un-coveted [by other programs], in-house candidate to bring about change.

Sometimes great coaches are bad speakers, and great speakers are bad coaches.

Babers talked a great game. Couldn't coach one.
I never cared for Baber's communication style (other than his locker room speeches after great wins - those were great). He wasn't a bad communicator, just corny as hell. More often I'd come away after listening to him and shake my head.

The best was thinking we could be elite in man defense. Truly when was the last time Autry was around man defense?

I covered JB during his early years.

One thing I found is that his dysfunctional approach to the media - long before he learned to profit from a media role - infected many of his pkayers.

The snarter ones knew better.

JB was not smart at times during his pressers. He threw guys under the bus. Demoralized others. Many excused it because of his record, but that wasn't good - I just think back to Roberson. My gawd did he bury his "guy". Boeheim's main problem with the media was his stuborness and belief that he was clearly smarter than 99.99% people even when he made boneheaded mistakes.

If he's here for 20 years he'll have a statue next to Ernie. You should all root for that.
Im rooting for the next guy to get 30. JB won a lot of games and got crap from the media for struggling to get past the sweet 16. It appears he had the right to gripe considering the media can get scolded for rightfully questioning the skill level of a team that couldn't even win 50% of their games in the weakest ACC in 2 decades+. Red was already coming up with excuses not even 2 hours after his terrible season ended in embarrassment

I just watched the full press conference (I watch all of them.) If someone doesn't work with Red on media relations, things are going to get even more difficult for him. How much longer are reporters going to let him off without follow-up questions simply because he is a nice guy? Also, everyone has verbal tics when they speak publicly, but his "you know" and throat clearing are beyond rough. Head coaching at this level is a public position and answering questions is part of the job.

Literally forever.

The Syracuse media is the easiest to deal with of any northeastern market that has pro or major college sports.

I think JB’s case is petty straight forward .. He was a ass..but it worked .. Not sure when that happened as his first years I was not old enough … Look at the man though and I appreciate everything he did but he didn’t look like your typical hoops coach with the goofy glasses .. So he better have an edge and he did .. He didn’t get pushed around and if you listen to former players they respect the he’ll outta him but they kinda joke when they say “Boeheim did this or that”…. he won because had an edge and didn’t give a dam .. I find it funny that guys get Boeheimed but come back to the community and school … your players dont care if you have an edge with them but you better be honest with them … I get the vibe JB was …I know times have changed but I would rather have a coach with that edge …. also the change in everyone’s vision was JB starting Joe and letting KR leave .. I think JB showed more favoritism to Joe than Buddy .. Buddy was dam good and made us better.. KE should have started over Joe but he didn’t earn JBs trust

I'm not quite there yet, but I'm close to buying that Red views the fanbase as an adversary, not an ally, with comments like this (or lack thereof). Griff has alluded the same.

Once you turn on your own fanbase, it starts to really get ugly.
Great way of describing the situation. Not a fan of it personally because it’s like are they truly that ignorant to how power 5 college athletics coaching is completely performance based? And add to that we are literally a top 10 program of all time historically… so like with that comes larger expectations… and you have the worst season in 6 decades. Not sure why an ounce of energy is being utilized to defend themselves. Start speaking about the future positively etc

The university letting JAB talk unscripted for 18 minutes at the height of the Bernie Fine scandal was possibly the dumbest comms and PR move I have ever witnessed

Autry's time has been rough and it's reflected in the media and the fan reaction, but a lot of the frustration has been built up over the last years of JB's tenure. Syracuse hasn't been Syracuse for a long time and there is an urgency that is there that will be hard to ignore going forward.

I honestly don't think that SU is constituted as a program to succeed unless the $$ and the coaching staff are upgraded .
I think the coaching has to be changed before the money will be there. That's what ADJW is not understsnding.

Look, at some point it needs to be acknowledged that JB was a good coach but not a good guy.

That doesn’ make him unique.

Bob Knight. Jim Calhoun. The list goes on.

Plenty of guys in the same psychological syndrome who arguably did as much harm as they did good.

I think he was closer to crying when we lost the 1987 national championship game.
Probably the most heartbreaking loss in the history of the program.
In basketball. The 1961 football loss to ND was FAR worse. We was robbed!! Literally. The controversy went on for weeks (and years). I've gotten over the former (mostly); 2003 helped. I haven't gotten over the later and never will. My blood still boils!! 63 years later.
