Coverage Was Disappointing ?

Exactly. Red was the guy, years before JB was forced out. It was preordained by powers that be in the university, and many of those people provide access and insight to posters on this board and to the media. That's why there hasn't been more howling; the narrative is being veered away from what is obvious even to folks that know nothing about basketball.
I don't think there has been some grand conspiracy or anything.

Basically, people who are big fans of Boeheim spent 2017 through 2023 handwaving away the obvious decline of the program. It was a natural reaction to defend the guy that built a nationally relevant, title-winning program.

And JB gave them juuuust enough ammo for that defense... the 2018 and 2021 Sweet 16 runs. Plus, the sentiment that the legend gets to choose when he steps aside wasn't egregious in the abstract.

I will always contend that forcing Boeheim out in March of 2023 was predicated on installing Autry as head coach. There were a lot of folks -- boosters, former players, board members -- who would have been happy to let JB coach forever. I have zero doubt that JB would still be head coach as we speak if a few powers-that-be hadn't finally had enough two years ago this week. Red was the compromise. Boeheim leaves but we hire internally, the guy you all know and like.

It just hasn't worked out.

Boeheim was very smart this is stupid. Like epically stupid. Faults sure but the man was light years ahead of most coaches on the EQ of the job and genius level consistency. Discounting the very end which happens to most
There is more to being smart than being smart in your career. He was a smart guy and a very good basketball coach who, like many public figures, thinks that success makes him an expert on everything, it doesn't.

Yes. This really isn't hard to figure out. JW doesn't think Autry got all the support he needed last offseason. That's why they hired Kline to run scouting. That's why they've (reportedly) beefed up NIL. That's why they've opted in to the House revenue sharing parameters.

Now, we can disagree with JW's assessment. We can lay the blame much more squarely at Red's feet for being utterly unprepared to acquire players via the portal, and for being negligent in carrying out his fundraising duties.

But if Kiyan went to USC Autry would still be getting a 3rd year. It's plain as day.
I don't think it was in Wildhack's hands. "Not getting the support he needed" might be the justification for retaining Red, but I think his general silence on the issue speaks volumes.

His hands are tied until next March.

Exactly right. I wouldn't call it a conspiracy, but the folks who wanted to keep it in the family found Red as the perfect way to do so, and they won out.

And they are not owning up to the mistake.

Look, at some point it needs to be acknowledged that JB was a good coach but not a good guy.

That doesn’ make him unique.

Bob Knight. Jim Calhoun. The list goes on.

Plenty of guys in the same psychological syndrome who arguably did as much harm as they did good.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. He and Julie have done a ton for this community. Many things you never hear about. Is he grumpy yes, but to say he isn’t a good guy is incorrect.

I'm not sure I care what people own. We'll know with certainty soon enough if it truly was a mistake. There's a universe where we'll know this summer, long before the team takes the floor.

I only care from the perspective that I don't want this process repeated, with unqualified people in the administration / BoT getting involved.

I suspect that most everyone involved recognizes that this went poorly. So mea cuplas are irrelevant.

Fair. If the Fran search is any indication, it will be JW running things if it comes to that.

I don't think anyone was really "involved" when Red was hired. He just happened to be the guy sitting in the lucky chair when JB was pushed out.

I'm honestly shocked Team Melo is ok with what they've seen so far.
Hopefully they are clamoring for some staff upgrades and helping to make some changes internally. Melo has been pretty classy and professional throughout his career.

If he's working on things, he's doing it the right way.

In basketball. The 1961 football loss to ND was FAR worse. We was robbed!! Literally. The controversy went on for weeks (and years). I've gotten over the former (mostly); 2003 helped. I haven't gotten over the later and never will. My blood still boils!! 63 years later.
The honorable thing would have been for Notre Dame to make it a forfeit loss.
It still bothers me after all these years.

It showed that Notre Dame is not "honorable". Even after the NCAA Rules Committee determined that, under the then existing rules, they should have not gotten another play.

Then why is he a head coach?

Because we didn’t do a search and the folks in charge made a snap decision.

Because...Wildhack says what he believes and believes what he says...that's why.

"Autry has been exposed to every aspect of the sport, and that uniquely prepares him for the job.' “Adrian earned this,” Wildhack said Friday. “Adrian’s not here because he’s an alum, because he played here, because he’s an associate coach here. He’s here because I believe he’s the best candidate to lead this program and sustain the success that coach Boeheim has established over 47 years.”

So the team takes on the coach's personality.

I could play defense today but I choose not to fir this game.

If I were Red, I'd call Tony Bennett and arrange a time to get togetherand talk about defense and learn from him the best he can.

Boeheim's ouster may not have been predicated on Autry being his successor. I think it is likely they were independent decisions. It appears that KS likely made the decision to retire JB. Based on what we don't know for sure. Some may suspect it was related to KS essentially banning AW from any involvement with the program. But I think that was done independent of who the next coach would be. If it had been predetermined that it would Autry, then it was. If it was not predetermined, the powers that be (AW, KS, BOT) decided to choose him. Mistakenly as it has turned out so far.

People had been saying for a couple years prior to March 2023 that Autry was the successor. It wasn't a big secret.

Shoot... see if he'd be willing to come back as an assistant in a purely teaching/coaching role away from the other drama and NIL stuff. Probably not, but something like that might save Red.

The lucky chair, because people who shouldn't have been involved in the decision inserted themselves and forced things in that direction.

Can't occur again, and won't.

Do you know this, or is it your suspicion?

My belief is that JW wanted to hire Autry. Maybe not because he was the best candidate. But because he was good enough and he was the path of least chaos.

Just because someone is something doesn’t mean they are equipped. Red is really a disaster.

Not sure why the media isn’t howling. Does Syracuse have a Dan Shaugnessy?
We don't need a CHB-level scumbag reporter around.

When reporters are tossing you softballs and you can't answer there's already a huge issue.

I agree that our coverage was disappointing. I am of course referring to our defensive coverage throughout the entire season including against low majors in November.
