Coverage Was Disappointing ?

After our worst year in 45 years our head coach had a chance to speak the fans and declined.

After losing to DePaul for a 3rd time, Ed Cooley gave a passionate speech about how Sorber was overlooked by the other BE coaches and how this time next year will have a different Result and their time is coming.

I think Cooley is completely delusional but seeing how passionate and fired up he was was really night and day compared to Red. He seems like he’s still fighting. Red looks like he quit to me

He didn’t decline entirely; he said not right now. I think there’s a difference in that he could still make it right.

When is his next speaking engagement? Or post a video on social media.

It’d be so easy to follow up and answer the question, but I think he has to do that ASAP. I could understand it was right after a loss, he wasn’t thinking about next year, whatever spin he wants to put on it. Then answer the question with a spirited answer to officially close this season and look ahead to the portal and next year.

They can’t be that dumb that they don’t see they need to give fans something to be excited about sooner than later, can they?

I don't mind him not answering the question after the game but yeee-gads, come up with something better than:

"I am not going to answer that right now."

...all after throwing shade on the local press pool that he thought they covered him unfairly??

How about?:

"I'll be talking about next season and the portal in the very near future, so I'd ask you and our fans to stay tuned. There will be more to come on that shortly. Our season just ended with our current team and I'm not going to get into next year tonight."

It's really not difficult.

Softball stuff.

Red knows his back is against the wall and he needs to find some way to assemble a competitive roster within the next 60 days to save his job next year.

The fact that he can’t even articulate what went wrong and his plan to correct (which ultimately has to be implemented immediately) shows he’s not going to be successful. He doesn’t have the vision. Doesn’t have the leadership. He’s flailing.

Guys, this could get very ugly. I really don’t see him pulling a series of rabbits out of his hat in the next two months. Seems he needs a miracle and that miracle is unlikely.

So this time next year it’s all but assured we’ll be discussing our ongoing search for a new coach or the next coach that was hired.

Fair. If the Fran search is any indication, it will be JW running things if it comes to that.

I don't think anyone was really "involved" when Red was hired. He just happened to be the guy sitting in the lucky chair when JB was pushed out.
Give Wildhack all the credit for taking the phone call and making the hire. From every account I have read, Fran Brown contacted Wildhack about the role. Fran came out of nowhere and it was not part of any plan to hire the next football coach. When he fired Dino, it was not like he had his successor hand picked.

At least he did a job search for football. Basketball and men's lacrosse, Wildhack went down the hall and picked someone from their offices and gave them a different job. I wouldn't say Wildhack has a lot of success in searching for head coaches. The majority off the top of my head are alumni. Even Women's lacrosse.

I went to Syracuse and know who my peers were and what we did at the time on the Hill. It wouldn't hurt to bring in some outside voices:)

I think with Men's Lacrosse the story is Gary went to Wildhack first and asked for the job. Like Fran. Re replacing Gary at Women's Lacrosse, he might have been looking externally but the story is the women's lacrosse alumni pressure him to take Kayla.

The season has been over for months when it ended was just a formality. He has been speaking about next season all year long. Bring on the GM, fixing the NIL, and bring in better players that have been the theme for the past 2 months. They just asked for 50 million. He needed to show some passion, some fight fire something to get the fans fired up.

Anything after the fact is going to look like PR backtracking now, not heat of the moment stuff that you like to see from a coach that is truly passionate about fixing things.

Question. If not for Melos kid coming to SU would Red have been retained?
I’d be concerned that keeping Red might drive Kiyan away.Watching this season and how Red coached has to have been an eye opener for Kiyan and his dad.Im not sending my kid that has pro potential to some guy that seems to be clueless.

How many times does this need to be addressed? Kiyan is coming. He and his parents like Autry.

Carmelo has also said that he basically coaches his kid. So I doubt he's worried about how the staff "develops" Kiyan. Dad's doing that on his own.

I don't think there has been some grand conspiracy or anything.

Basically, people who are big fans of Boeheim spent 2017 through 2023 handwaving away the obvious decline of the program. It was a natural reaction to defend the guy that built a nationally relevant, title-winning program.

And JB gave them juuuust enough ammo for that defense... the 2018 and 2021 Sweet 16 runs. Plus, the sentiment that the legend gets to choose when he steps aside wasn't egregious in the abstract.

I will always contend that forcing Boeheim out in March of 2023 was predicated on installing Autry as head coach. There were a lot of folks -- boosters, former players, board members -- who would have been happy to let JB coach forever. I have zero doubt that JB would still be head coach as we speak if a few powers-that-be hadn't finally had enough two years ago this week. Red was the compromise. Boeheim leaves but we hire internally, the guy you all know and like.

It just hasn't worked out.
Only an organization run by idiots lets a guy hold them hostage for years despite the obvious decline and then backs themselves into a corner to hire an unqualified candidate. To add insult to injury they give him a contract they can’t afford to get out of even though they were bidding against no one.

Everyone involved with this fiasco would have been axed if the were in any other industry other than inept academia.

LMAO.

Have you ever worked for a corporation?

People had been saying for a couple years prior to March 2023 that Autry was the successor. It wasn't a big secret.
And people had also been saying that Gerry was JB's preferred successor.

We saw the same thing in how Gerry addressed the fans right after the last second loss. Trying to show the fans we are on an upward spiral and how he was going to fix the team.

It isnt rocket science. Red just could not put the fans needs ahead of his own feelings.

Hope he’s not teaching him defense.

As an aside...

Not sure if all the players like Red or not, but I found it interesting that Eddie's Mom said he absolutely loves it at Cuse and wishes they had found Cuse before his senior season (i.e. he was not happy at TCU or Colorado.)

This is exactly the reason why I think Donnie Freeman‘s and Choppa’s camp decided to have them sit out the rest of the season.

They didn’t want their NIL options at another school to be diminished on a terrible team with a coach who’s clueless about putting players in the best position for success

"Throw money at the portal" appears to be his solution at this point.

The thing is, acquiring those portal guys is probably the easiest part. They still need to be mixed and matched into a usable roster. They still need to be coached. Somebody still needs to be calling sets and running substitution patterns on gameday.

We can have the biggest NIL coffers in the country, but somebody still needs to know how to utilize the talent.

Do you know this, or is it your suspicion?

My belief is that JW wanted to hire Autry. Maybe not because he was the best candidate. But because he was good enough and he was the path of least chaos.

The problem is, he WASN'T good enough. He was unproven, and a huge gamble for a program teetering on the precipice and in real danger of backsliding even further.

At a point in time when our program had just undergone a steep dip in performance, on the tail end of what was then an 8-year decline.

It wasn't the time to turn things over to someone without a proven track record, nor for a continuity hire. The goal should not have been to maintain, it should have been to change the trajectory of the program.

If Autry was foisted on JW, then I blame the BoT more than Wildhack, but it was still a poor choice. Politics be damned, AD's are judged by outcomes, not just coaches. Forcing JB to step down was the hard part. JW had already taken the hardest step, all he needed to do was rip off the band aid, and instead the University chose the path of least resistance.

And because of that, we have 11,000 fans at games now, with season ticket sales likely to plummet even more next year, with the associated revenue impacts to ensue. It is going to be a big 60 days.

Hopefully they are clamoring for some staff upgrades and helping to make some changes internally. Melo has been pretty classy and professional throughout his career.

If he's working on things, he's doing it the right way.
This ^^^^

Good point and why Carmelo might not be too concerned. However, what Carmelo is not able to do is in game coaching and putting Kiyan in the rights spots with the right guys. We all saw how he handled substitutions and managed minutes for Choppa and Cuffe. That's what I'd be concerned about if I were Carmelo.

If the Anthonys are dumping money into the program their son will be getting minutes.

I'm hoping they hire a Director of Player Development or something. Perhaps Devendorf and he gets a number two who wants to be in coaching. Perhaps a Brandon Triche.
