Csonka

I remember sitting on the concrete in Archbold Stadium in the cold October rain/snow watching Zonk against Penn State. While we lost 29-20 Larry was amazing. All 41,000 knew who was getting the ball on third and short and he made it every time. (Tom Coughlin also was in the backfield.)

Thanks for the memories Zonk.

From Wikipedia

"Csonka was recruited by Clemson, Iowa, Vanderbilt, and Syracuse. He chose Syracuse, where he played middle linebacker in his first season before being switched to fullback from 1965 to 1967, the position where he was named an All-American. He established many of the school's rushing records, breaking several that had been held by Ernie Davis, Jim Nance, Floyd Little, and Jim Brown.

In his three seasons at Syracuse, Csonka rushed for a school record 2,934 yards, rushed for 100 yards in 14 different games, and averaged 4.9 yards per carry. From 1965 to 1967, he ranked 19th, ninth and fifth in the nation in rushing. He was the Most Valuable Player in the East–West Shrine Game, the Hula Bowl, and the College All-Star Game. In 1989, he was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame."

I’m not part of the Twitterverse.,, but Merry Christmas Czonk! And happy birthday. I’ve always suspected he is a lurker on this board. Or even an occasional poster.

Back in 1976, I lived in Piermont, NY. I used to hang out at a restaurant named Cornetta's. One night I walked in to see this humongus human being taking up 2 barstools. One for his frame and the other for a leg in a cast.
I looked at him and asked, "You look familiar, don't I know you from Syracuse?"
"Well I am kind of famous" he replied.
"Are you Oley Allen", I asked.
He laughed so loud that the bottles behind the bar shook.
After that my money was no good. Which was fortunate inasmuch as I was relatively impecunious at the time.
I hung out with him several times after that. One of the nicest and easiest guys to get along with that I ever met.
Plus, no one ever messed with me after that.
HAPPY BITHDAY LARRY!

I had to google that. Before my time.

Very clever to think of that on the spot...

I remember reading a story in the Daily Orange about Larry knocking down a wall in the old married student dorms. Apparently, he was practicing taking off from his stance by rushing through a doorway and started hitting the corner of the doorway, which collapsed. Always figured it was a bunch of horseplay gone bad. Made a great story anyway.
