Curt Cignetti: Why can’t we hire this guy?

Florida fans I know say Mullen was an awful fit and didn't recruit well, at least for what a team needs to be in the SEC. You can look at numbers any way you want.
That is definitely the way florida fans feel about him. Mullen isn't a great recruiter and while he is a better coach than Dino and I think that is a pretty safe bet, I don't think the recruiting would improve much or at all but I don't think there are many coaches syracuse could hire where the recruiting would get a lot better. Syracuse will NEVER have another top 25 recruiting class. It simply will not happen barring some HUGE cash infusion

Florida fans I know talk really slow and say y'all alot.

Are they actually from Florida? I spend a decent amount of time in the state…it’s in the south on a map but that’s about it.

I live in Florida. I was joking. Most people I know that live here, whether born here or not, do not talk slowly. Many do say "y'all". I have met some slow talking Floridians, but not many.

So he won with another coaches players that that prior coach couldnt win with? Sounds like Babers.

...but...McElwain won with Muschamps players, Mullen won with McElwain's players and now Napier at 4-2 is winning with Mullens players. It's sort of silly saying coach XYZ won with the other guys players. That's usually how college football goes. Babers right now is losing with his own players.
I think looking at his time at MSU is more fair to Mullen.

JMU makes the coach, the coach doesn't make JMU. Mike Houston, Cignetti's predecessor at JMU, has done jack at ECU.
From where he started Houston was doing well before this year at ECU.

I think Cignetti is a good HC but at his age why would he want to take on a P5 job?

Rather see us take a gamble on the Delaware HC.

The Florida fans I know are incredibly intelligent and well connected.

I don't doubt that, but strange how what would appear to be such an attractive job can get so many swings and misses with their head coaches. Zook, Muschamp, McElwain, Mullen. Possibly Napier too. 6-6 last year (bowl games don't count anymore). 5-2 now, but that's not an easy 5 game stretch to end the season.

Being a program CEO is really hard. Saban just makes it look easy.

46 in-state kids plus a bunch of portal guys from bigger schools. Sweet sweet gig...

Saban coaches. Dino tries to do both and he doesn’t know how to coach. All these NfL guys say Alabama practices are harder than NfL practices simply bc of how Saban is and how hard he coaches

They may not say it out loud, but almost every high-level HC wants a 'shot' at P5. I see Cignetti's age as a positive as he'd be less likely to jump at the next offer.

Also well known if Pitt opens, he's on the next plane.

Saban also has all of the boosters aligned and working toward his interests.

As long as the Top 6 conference champs get in, he has a better chance of making the playoffs there too.

More likely WV where he went to school and his dad coached.

He will be 63 before next season. Most older coaches in every sport just want to coach. They don’t want to baby sit kids off the field. They don’t want to recruit. They don’t want to rebuild. Five years ago, sure. But not now.

And no pressure. They know their place at the table.
Well watch them tonight on the big ESPN stage. I live in VA and have seen them several times. They play fast and hard with fun and discipline. Most of which we’ve lacked for nearly 8 years.

He make less than Dino. He’s only gonna take one more job. If we don’t he’ll beat us at Pitt or BC.

Malzahn makes more at UCF than he'd make at Syracuse. Per ESPN just last week.

Malzahn agreed to terms early this summer and the school raised his salary to $4 million per year on July 1, sources told ESPN. The deal rises to $5.5 million annually in 2026 and 2027, sources said, and the deal gives both additional salary and one extra year on the deal to push it through 2027

It's been said Babers makes 4 million here. Malzahn has the perfect retirement job and with UCF entering the Big 12 there is no way we could get him to Syracuse. He'll have everything he needs at UCF. Money and a chance to get into the playoff.

Games inside should give us a decided advantage when it comes to getting a warm weather coach to come north though. I hope Wildhack understands that and in fairness to Wildhack he inherited Babers. The flip side, is that Wildhack has not proven to be an outside the box thinker so who knows, in his mind he might be thinking we need a Northeast meathead.

That’s my concern whenever the time comes. I see him picking a guy who has experience and maybe was successful once but knows a lot of people who like him. Well known in the coaching circles. CFB and the NFL love hiring these types of guys and then are surprised when the team is just mediocre.

I have so little faith in Wildhack I could see him calling Paqualoni.
