Finally got to see him show something for a full game. He made a few good catches, had a couple drops, but Ish did too. It will be interesting to see if he can get open the next 2 weeks as often. i dont think he has elite speed but I dont know how quick the DB was either. With better throws he may have had 3-4 TDs though.

CC going single high all night really showed they didnt think we could get over the top and while we really didnt it wasnt because they werent open, we just missed them over and over, and it was all of them Ish/Custis/Phillips all had open shots deep and didnt connect.. Hopefully we clean that timing up a bit.

One thing that was interesting was the routes were almost all run 5-7 yds in from the sideline and the throws almost all led inside where the DBs were making it easier to defend.. Custus had one thrown outside but it was underthrown in any case. Not sure about that play design if it was supposed to be thrown that way.

In contrast when we had multiple throws down the sideline we ended up throwing them out of bounds several times..

hopefully some film study cleans up some other things as well.. We had 2-3 times guys running middle deep slants with no safety help and a whole field to lead the WR open and never threw the ball that direction.

really we should have hit deep balls 5-6 times and didnt complete any, its all about getting shots and we misfired.

we did confused them a bit though, the one to Moe they never covered and a couple to Phillips were blown coverage's as well, hope to see that continue, and as someone else said we ignored the middle of the field almost all game and I think that was by design, we seldom even ran guys into that area.

It was nice to see Custis finally get some reps. I'm sure a lot of people were excited when he signed due to his speed and size.

The middle vs Shafer Saturday should be quite open.

People disregard everything Babers says as coach speak - but I do think he was right in saying we started getting greedy. Dungey said he was telling him to "stay bored" and make the easy throw. I took that as more screens and slots running curls, less deep shots.

Curious to see how the film session will go and seeing who was open on the shorter routes that were missed or not quite developed yet.

Agree.

You could look at the receptions discrepancy for the "inside" guys vs the "outside" guys. I expect them to be a bit more even over time.

10 total receptions for Erv, Moe, Pierce (inside)

19 for Ish, Custis, Bulter (outside)

Ravian could have his coming out party Saturday

He seems to want to go the distance with every catch...I like that but Babers does seem to want the catch it (Don't try to always make the big play) and let's get ready to snap the ball again.

Butler was too excited to run and forgot the small detail of catching the ball first. He'll be fine and agree he'll do quite well on the Hill.

What was going on with Dungey underthrowing Custis/Ish on deep routes, what, at least 3 times, maybe 4? I don't think that was a planned part of those routes ... looked really sloppy and against better defenses some of those are going to get picked.

AET saved him on those last year and it's a good question if that was designed or not. Maybe someone can ask HCDB Thursday night?

you can get away with that if there is no safety help. some teams will have to roll the safety and that opens up the other side and underneath. still wish we missed those plays long and not short.. if you throw 1-2 a game i get making sure the WR has a shot, but if you throw them 6-7-8 times a game i would rather be long since 2-3 are going to be short anyway.

Yes, overhshooting's much safer. Let our guys separate and run under the ball. I mean, Dungey was 5 yards short on a bunch of long routes. True, as you mention, there was no safety help, but still ... concerning, although otherwise he looked really good.

Another question: did I miss something or did Scoop Bradshaw struggle mightily defending FCS receivers? I'm sure they're going to see this stuff on film but I'm guessing we need a talent upgrade at his position. Safety help (Foster) was also late on their TD throw (which was an excellent throw).

some of that is making the decision too late. is he open vs he will be open.

I think they were by design. Throwing back shoulder fades to our WR's that are 5" taller than the DB. I'm not sure we're convinced Custis and Ish can get behind a DB so we throw the ball up and behind at about 25-30 yards and have our bigger guys go up and get it. At least that's what it looked like to me...

AET bailed him out on a ton of those last year

Some of that may be by design.
You're not getting anything out of an overthrow, but if it's short your WR can still make a play, or possibly draw PI.
You want to give playmakers a chance to make plays.

Custis seems to be one of those players that a coach sees and can't wait until he puts it all together. He made some mistakes on routes and if he can cut down those and keep working on his hands he has potential to be very good. I just hope he figures things out sooner than later and things slow down for him because he can have a huge impact on this offense.

especially in the red zone, not many dbs can climb the ladder with him.

you throw back shoulder fades 15-25 yds down field on the sideline.. not on streak routes, Im not sure our QBs are accurate enough to throw those routes most of the time by design.

A couple of those deep throws to Custis were right in front of where we were sitting, and my initial thought was that the balls seemed catchable if JC made an earlier adjustment. Not sure if anyone had a simar thought.

As I think about last season, it seems to me that AET would have made those catches. I think he would have recognized the underthrow early, come back for the ball, and maybe even run past the stumbling DB for a touchdown. I believe he had 1 or 2 of those last season - maybe against UCONN?

Custis and the other receivers on the outside, need to show something better. Our outside receivers showed nothing, no ability to separate deep. Then again, there were no routes run over the middle to make the D REALLY think.
