Let's see how he decides to manage it. He called out the effort level being too low in the second half which I was glad to hear. He will have his own way I'm sure. The extended period where Bell and Benny both sat in the second half I thought was to make a point. I don't see Red calling players out like JB did and keeping it in the locker room/Melo center.

Was thinking the same thing, they have a window before he goes hardcore, especially if he's coaching for the big picture. He seems like a player's coach so I don't see him putting them on blast in public or going so hard right off the bat.

In fairness if McLeod had that nasty in him he would probably be a pro already at his size and with his ability to run the floor. He's not that guy and that's still OK. He's got good instincts as a shot blocker and doesn't flail like Jesse at times where he would have fouling issues. I get what you are saying but again that's why a still developing limited value kid like this is out there available.

Of the guys who played last night, I could most see Copeland playing in the NBA with his size and vision. Work to do, for sure, but what he has cannot be taught.

He’s a soph. There is time. He’s not fully-formed yet. Is anyone talking about him declaring after this season?

Remember how bad Laz Sims was for three years and then he was fantastic as a senior? I think Copeland has headroom. Remember how Jason Kidd was called Ason? Players can develop. Maybe we’re being overly optimistic, but that’s part of the fun. I said Peter Carey is going to be Kevin Garnett. I have no optimism in any other area of my life. Let me have that.

I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt, and consider that he’s just ‘measuring’ his opponent and showing his reach, like Muhammad Ali.

His shooting will have to come around for him to enter that discussion. Right now he is a really nice utility player at the college level. Has a high ceiling though

I dunno... His shorter prototype is Kyle Lowery.. no elite speed, athleticism and a streaky shooter. But, he has moxy out the A(wazu). Cope is taller, has great court vision, will play defense, good size, can play 3 positions and guard all three. Don't sleep.

I prefer something a step below that. Arkansas makes things chaotic but they also overplay at times and it bites them. They also are foul prone. Pains me to say it but I prefer more of how Hurley runs his system at UConn on D than Musselman.

We then add the twist of switching to an effective zone using pressure at times a la Pitino ball.

He's a 6-6 guard who can get to the rim. You're forgetting that.

Looking at the box score (didnt watch the game), Daeman had more offensive rebounds than SU (7-6)

in theory, a benefit of playing man is offensive rebounding...or, a negative of zone is lack of rebounding...

im kinda surprised by that - thought switching to man would instantly help with rebounding...

perhaps a lot of these players have the muscle memory from the zone in a way? or simply havent developed as rebounders, especially offensively...

if youre going to play a lot of dribble drive, passing, share the ball...offensive rebounding seems like it should be a key.

By far our best offensive rebounder is Brown and he only played a few minutes. I think as long as he is healthy and plays good minutes, we should be a lot better than we showed against Johnny Damon. Sorry, I can’t help keep thinking of him whenever I read Daemen.

Yeah, Bell was on the struggle bus all night, in all facets.

He’s a likeable kid, who seems willing to put the work in.

Here’s hoping he can stay on the Southerland career path -
Dirty South didn’t do much more than shoot early in his career, and struggled on D despite his length & athleticism,
but ended up being a much more well rounded player as a Jr & Sr.

They did. Thought for sure we were losing after that. Was one of the best steals at the end of a game we have had.

He was showing the same thing against his own teammates in the 2 scrimmages. They are decidedly not Division 2.

For those of you who asked about stats/box score here it is to accompany llandz's Copeland line: ​

Interesting game. Great to watch Starling and a team that actually runs the floor although they better get better. This was a nice win but only by 13 to Daemen. To me it should have been 22 as it was at the end of the first half.

We need to practice our man D. We seem like we are just running around trying to keep up with our man right now - first game, we'll get there.

People have been down on Benny but I saw a few rebounds where it seemed like he was above the rim with his feet - his VJ must be very very good.

Taylor proved he has a nice smooth 3 in the first half. The team looked together first half - not so much second.

Say what you want about Copeland the kid has some skills that will come in handy and he was the top scorer.

JJ was a rocket distributing and just playing ball.

Cuffe is a little gem waiting to be discovered.

If only we could run and shoot the way we did with our two guards Douglas / Thompson. Perhaps we will when Judah is playing with JJ. I hope they have their own combo moves together - that should be special.

I don't expect too much from this team - first year together, we'll see how it plays out, maybe they'll surprise me. We go to Maui - watch out! There we'll see how much we have and what our true team looks like.

I was glad Autry played as many as he did -first game, first time seeing what he has. Hope we have a good season. Red has done a very good job taking over managing and now getting his first win.
