Class of 2014 Dakari Johnson

some people on this board are so dense

he is a projected top 3 pick, why the hell would he stay?

agree. same thing with rak even though he isn't projected high doesn't mean he isn't already gone.

Sounds like his mom is defiantly does not like us. If Coleman & Rac are still here there is no way he is coming here.
i never saw what his mother said? anyone fill me in?

IIRC, she is well aware of the logjam at center at SU and unless someone leaves, it is unlikely he comes here, although they LOVE Autry. Red has been recruiting Dakari since Red was at VTech.

thanks for the reply. pretty pointless comment in my opinion. i always liked when kids chose a school having confidence in their ability no matter who is there. plus with attrition in cbb these days you have to keep an open mind.

Regarding his mom's opinion, hey, she wants him to be an impact player, and would like to speed the process of getting to the NBA, and SU could be hurting for available spaces for next year. I would not say Rakeem and Dajuan are anywhere near ready to enter the NBA draft. Size or not, they'd need to demonstrate a real reason to be drafted on potential, and as of this moment, they are not going to be drafted. That's just reality, and I hope they both understand that. When you look at those two, plus Obokoh, and maybe Chris McCulloch or even Jermaine Lawrence, there's no room at the inn, unless they get really creative, and that just might alienate a recruit, as Indiana did to Patterson.

What concerns me a little is the size of the class and the interest in joining it. There is, or at least used to be, a limit of six
signees per class, though it didn't include transfers. Is this still in effect?

There is no limit anymore. St johns pulled 7 last year I think.

I assume the class size limit was changed so as not to interfere with Cal's plan for world domination. If he sends 5 or 6 guys to the draft each year, he needs to be able to adequately replenish his stable of mercenaries, err, student athletes.

The only thing that has me convinced Rak or DC2, and maybe even both, are leaving is the behavior of the staff. No concern about McCullough maybe moving up a year. Even assuming MCW is gone that would still be a MASSIVE frontcourt logjam. Plus they haven't backed off Dakari at all. Makes me think they know theres places for them.

That might be true, and that would be unfortunate for both othose guys. They compare Dajuan to Sullinger, who as a freshman (and soph?) was an AA averaging like 18 & 9; and he fell to 22nd. Dajuan isn't showing that yet; I'd think NBA scouts would want to see that. Rakeem, I see a current top end comparison to what fascinated scouts with Darius Miles: 6'9", 210lb, long, quick, could run, block shots, and dunk. Amazing that an 18 year old at that size could do that, huh? He didn't develop much more than that, but still made like $50-60M. However, I just don't think a GM is going to look at a kid the same way anymore.

If they do go pro, I'd hope they do great, for themselves, and for SU as a brand. I just don't think they're ready yet, nor have shown enough to warrant a ton of interest. The mock drafts don't even list them.

The staff certainly knows what it's doing these days recruitingwise. They are in the enviable position of having too many top prospects interested in attending.

In all fairness, Sullinger fell in the draft because he was medically red flagged for back issues. Had Sullinger come out after his freshman year, he was a lock for the lottery.

Right now (or in a year from now) just how good is Dajuan in comparison to Rak or DC2 (or will be in a year from now). ? I know it is difficult to assess but if his number 1 status is accurate and he comes to SU maybe RAK or DC2 will wish they went pro if they did not.

The staff always has a strategy in mind when pursuing these kids- so Im sure every contingency is considered...or they wouldn't bother to pursue them. DUH! :noidea:
This tired topic comes up each & every year...only the names seem to change.

Won't disagree with you at all on that. Sullinger put up 17.2 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game as a freshman. Those are AA stats. Those get you drafted high. Neither of SU's guys are close to that; in fairness, they won't get the opportunity, as SU isn't a low post oriented team. But they need to intrigue a GM enough to say "Yeah, you're worth dropping $X million over the next 3-4 years including the option" to be drafted.

So let me get this straight... he just narrowed his list to a list of three schools that all do not yet have a scholarship available to offer?

PayCal expects Noel to leave next year leaving an opening at the 5 ... ergo the push on Dakari.
SU is a different story... I do believe that there is 1 remaining schollie with MCW moving on to the draft. The problem is the logjam at the 3-4-5. Ya got, Roberson, Obokoh, Rak, DC2, Grant, CJ, BMK, and BJ. None of these are ready for draft ... and that's if Mike G plays the 2 instead of the 3. Hey that only leaves Ennis, Cooney, and Patterson to man the 1-2.

Dakari and DC play the same position and very similar. Dakari won't come here if DC is here. No if and or buts. The staff might be able to convince him to come here and split time with Baye but never Baye and DC. Rak leaving or not will have absolutely no influence on Dakari's decision. So if DC doesn't improve enough to enter the draft then don't get your hopes up regarding Dakari. He has better options than fighting for time with both Baye and DC here. A poster in this thread just doesn't get it. If DC improves then our chances improve greatly.

Agreed. Dakari won't be coming here with this logjam. Noel in the NBA...lol. He'll come out but he'll get dominated.

Honestly, as much as I'd love for Dakari to come to SU, I'd rather have a Soph DC2 with a year in the program. I just think that situation would be a better outcome from a competitiveness standpoint. My opinion, but given understanding of the position requirements specific to SU, I think Soph DC2 > Frosh DJ. It doesn't mean that i necessarily think Dejaun will always be the better player than Dakari, just taking into account the value of a year in the system.

you appear to be missing an eye for talent and ability.

Could you post the videos of his that you watched? The first one that I watched was supposed to be one of his highlight videos from a tournament and it was basically just him missing over and over and pump faking hundreds of times.

i am no judge of talent... but Boeheim and his staff are... and Calipari and the coaches he uses to evaluate talent (i.e.. Boeheim) think this kid is legit.

I'll be watching Dakari @ The City of Palms Tournament tonight at 11pm. Just finished watching Huntington Prep w/ an all D1 starting 5 including our (hopefully) very own Andrew Wiggins. He seemed disinterested followed by flashes of freak athleticism. Showed a few NBA moves and almost hit his head on a few ally oops. Still ended up with 31. I'd love to watch him when challenged.
