I think we just have to get used to our system producing high-stat WRs that bolt for greener pastures. There are positions where we need to overpay to keep players, and WR is apparently not going to be one of them.

Based on comments here it wasn’t Gill’s intention to transfer. It sounds like he was nudged out. I wonder if there was so much money being offered that Fran persuaded him to go get it.

So instead of paying someone who could be a #1 and has had proven success at this level we are going to pay someone else who is unproven and may never be #1… solid

thats how recruiting works. if you want the #2 rated wr in the country you cant pay him chump change. you gotta pay him as a #1 whether he ends up being #1 or not. getting the #2 rated player at any position is rarified air for us. we had to do what we had to do.

So to me it sounds like it may be 1 or 2 things.

#1) If the issue is regarding snaps or on field useage, I wonder if it was promising him that he would be the #1 player? I find it hard to believe that Fran would guarantee Russell would be a #1. Did Gill want assurance he would be the #1? From hearing Frans comments previously about these types of things, I would think Fran wouldn't promise anybody #1 and say you have to prove your #1 and win it just as always.

#2) Or is it really just more about the money as Gill knows he can get paid like a #1 WR and we are only willing to pay so much. Fran says we can pay you this and If you want to enter the portal and check out the opportunities you can do so. Now unsure how that would play out with him returning. I'm sure we would like him back but we may not be willing to pay what we initially would as we had to sign some other WR's not knowing what his outcome would be. So maybe its not an option for return anymore as the money isn't there? Or is it that Russell is automatically getting #1 money this year as a Frosh so really bringing Gill back at a similar market value to #1 cost isn't an option for SU.

QB makes perfect sense though, this year (and most years prior) has proven that QB can make a break a team even if you have elite talent all around them. The revenue generation alone from a big time QB is worth it

From what I know, I don't see Gill as this person, or wanting to be this person. He turned down some programs that have a similar profile to Ohio. He already had offers like the one in this article. But maybe this is why we have not heard anything yet about where he is going. Maybe new actors have come to the table from the 3 finalist he was considering. I am sure this is a very big decision, especially when you are looking at one year only.
