I myself was hoping to use the AAU season last year to see if the boy wanted to extend his HS career into a post grad somewhere. But that didn't happen, and he's so done with HS now he's ready to put it all behind him.

And now the wife and I will have to find other things to do instead of watching him play ball

If he doesn't have plans for college yet and has any desire to keep hooping there's plenty of JUCO roster spots in NY.

My experience didn't go as planned but I certainly don't regret the decision

Yep...Coaches push players out the door every year. No issues at all with players getting the right to get out of a program because of fit or any other reason.

When you decide to enter the portal, what is the understanding, if any, between the player and the school?

(1) bye bye and good luck with the portal journey. There is no coming back.
(2) we will hold you spot while you go take a peek for a period of X days, after which there is no guarantee.
(3) you will enter the portal, we will recruit from the portal, if we find someone to replace you, we will offer that person your scholarship, however we will call you first to give you right of refusal in case you change your mind.

4) we think you may want to explore the portal as we don't see a future for you here.
