It would be interesting for you to read about Dungey's rise through the depth chart his freshman year. He was clearly a better thrower than Hunt (a senior, leader of the team). Different staff, but the same stuff was happening on the board. We wanted him to play with the 1's, vs the 1's. But Dungey didn't have everything he needed to be the guy. Not yet.
He was showing a lot. But supplanting a starter is being better at every facet, not just making the throws.
Dungey had to prove all of that as the #2, to get looks as the 1.
Game 1, Hunt goes down. Dungey comes in and the rest is history.
My 2 cents? Head down, get better at what the coaches are pointing to.
