Day Ten Fall Camp: Thurs., August 10, 2017

Part of the plan, not base. Yes, they had Zone packages, like every team in America, but, it was not their offense. I've literally heard vm's between coaches about this situation. I've read practice plans from that Summer Camp.

By reading the articles, it's obviously part of the plan moving forward, but, it wasn't intended to be their entire offense. I'd imagine they wanted to integrate it until getting the younger guys more suited for it up to speed. All I know is that preseason camp started one way and finished another. And it wasn't in an orderly, planned fashion.
I take your word on that. But I feel like you're using this to argue that they could change the base defense, and I'm saying these situations cannot be compared.

Oh, no no no, I would never advocate for that (check the first post). I think it's craziness. Install your system and run that system to the best of your ability.

Misread it. Sorry for the extraneous use of sources to end up agreeing with you.

if the issues for the DE are somewhat minor hopefully we wont need them too much to get thru the first 2-3 weeks

Completely different offense. He opened camp in the same pro-style offense that he had put out there in years prior. Zone read wasn't a big factor during those years, gap was, zone was the base moving forward. We literally ran IZ/OZ all season. Wen't to almost exclusively gun/new play-calling mechanism. This is not something you do in a week.

Hackett was a wreck bc he thought he was inches from getting fired, he literallywas told by DM that basicall you need to do this and do it immediately. People around him thought he was going to be fired within the first couple weeks of the season.
good insight.

he does play angry. he's nasty and strong as a bull. I like his little upper cut move that's when he seems to have an xtra burst.
I couldn't agree more. Some very large OT's were being bounced around like beach balls and/or run past like statues.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here. On the other hand, why not... Ellis reminds me a little of Connor Barwin.

Agree on Qadir, man he would be a nice piece to have. Teams have players get kicked off the team and other crap all the time but SU has really taken a beating at DE the last couple of years. Babers is going to need to hit the JUCO ranks next year for a couple more DE's and bring in probably another 2 frosh as well just to help with depth. Good news is the oldest DE we have is a red-shirt soph so there is a lot of young depth. Berry only being a Sophmore will be a big help.

At this point you wonder if the staff could move a guy like Fagan to DE for the year if they planned to red-shirt him anyway and see if they catch lightning in a bottle. Even a guy like Shy Cullen despite his weight might be someone to consider.

Hopefully one of Black or Pickard is back to playing in the next week or so, even getting one of them back would be huge.

Fagan to DE? He is having a tough time making the wgt of a backer. Last look, he was barely 2 bills!

Does shy have the height? He has the quickness and toughness, i wont dispute that. If theres a kid with the mental toughness to switch positions this late in development, id say he's a great candidate

No, shy is 6', and fagan is 195# so talk of these 2 moving is comical. A reach, panic.

He's grown into the DT position size/weight wise. I don't think he has the speed at this point to move back to DE after bulking up.
Has he? I heard, on here I think, he can't get over 260. I assumed he was moved because he was never fast enough to be a fulltime DE.

Maybe he could help situationally at DE. Use him against run heavy teams or in running situations. Use a LB/DE as an edge rusher on passing downs

looks like freshman RTB has moved into the #2 hole behind Ishmael

I watched RTB and TD play catch on the sideline during the spring game

RTB would catch the balls one handed First right handed then left handed. All the time while chatting with TD. Never dropped a one.

We gotta call him All State which I think he was.

are pickard and black out for the season??
For what it's worth, Bailey tweeted at me that Black's knee brace was much smaller than Pickard's. Take that to mean whatever you choose.

Based on the article on Valdez, I would think he might see some reps at DE, especially in passing situations. While only listed at 6'1, I believe he is 236 and is good at applying pressure.

What you describe in bold text above was about Pickard, I believe.

Ruff is currently around 285.

Since Ruff started out as an LB, hopefully he keep some speed and quickness even @ 285.
Maybe a 3-4, with Ruff at NT a la Kevin Mitchell, flanked by Slayton and Williams? Speed rushers outside for passing downs?

Ruff wouldn't be used as an NT in a 3-4. He'd get pushed around. Williams, too, unless he's become a lot stronger since last year. Slayton I could see, but he's quick, too, and would likely be a DE in that scheme. Samuels, like Ruff, can't really handle the NT spot; he's strong enough, but gasses out WAY too quickly.

None of that matters, though, because I doubt the staff veers away from the 4-3, for the most part.

The player he was referencing, Kevin Mitchell, played NT for us in the early '90's at 240 lbs, hence the comparison. The guys we played at DE were actually bigger than him. He didn't play it in the traditional space eater way. He used his quickness to get in the backfield and create havoc. He was very effective racking up tons of TFL and was the defensive MVP of the Fiesta Bowl at the end of the '92 season when we finished top 10 (7th?). Later in his career, maybe the next year, he switched to MLB when we transitioned from 3-4 to 4-3 as our base. He ended up getting drafted, Washington maybe, and played a few years in the league.
