Day Three Fall Camp: Wed., August 2, 2017

And when do the high schools in Texas start their football seasons?
Late August...if you go far in the playoffs...you can play 15-16 games

High Schoolers do not have the huge travel and frankly in Texas most of the stud players took dumb downed HS classes taught by the Assistant Coaches.

Everything is just so different than back in 94. I don't ever remember thinking I hope that true freshman McNabb gets on the field. I mean, I didn't even know who he was until that spring game at the end of his true freshman season. Recruiting just wasn't covered like that. (Gulp, I don't even think there was much of an internet. I'm 43 and feel like I'm 83 just by saying that).

It will really just depend on the game and situation. If Dungey gets hurt against one of the 3 super heavyweights (LSU, Clemson, FSU), you're going to see the Officer. He's been in those games. TD won't get thrown into that mess against those DL. You could probably say Miami too given their front 7 (NOTE I didn't say they're a powerhouse).

If it's an injury that's early on in any of the other 8, good chance you see TD, because he'd have time to get in a rhythm and help us best win.

I think there's 0% chance that TD redshirts. Would be nice to have a 5th year guy like McNabb 98, but can't imagine it will happen. Especially if he's impressing early in camp.

The PS had decent info that I remember loving as a kid. I can remember them being really excited about Mcnabb and Johnson. Regardless your point is valid different era.

That proposal has significant backing. Believe it's being voted on later this year. Also talking about a 14 game season. I'm of the mindset that the 2 will pass together. (We're adding 2 games...BUT... we're giving significant opportunities to the student. But really about $$) Love the red shirt part.

Other proposals. An underclassmen doesn't need to be released to transfer. If a student transfers for academic reasons, he still sits out a year, but does NOT loose the year of eligibility..

Of all of them, I'm guessing, at least, the new redshirt rule passes. Take this ED/TD conversation... TD can get 4 games, without burning his shirt. PERFECT, for both the coach, and the athlete. (Especially on the recruiting front.. Red shirt? No prob...it's a 4 game bonus)
Saban backs proposed redshirt rule tweak

Don't forget Keith Downing, who was considered a good running QB recruit as well. It's almost impossible to believe that we had THREE quarterbacks on the team at the same time who likely were better than any QB we had in the 17 years pre-Dungey.

I think that might depend on the school system.

And I'm in NC and they start in August here also and I don't think these kids are taking dumb downed courses...unless they are going to UNC.

Phoenix AZ schools started this week.

Of course, they're done May 23.

What?

That is way too early

Texas schools moved up the start calendar from end of August to August 21/22nd. They claim it saves costs from cooling. Not sure how so, when August is hotter than June.

I followed a school bus learning it's route down here in NC this morning. Some schools across the state have started school this week.

Don't want to derail this thread much further, but I believe it is a 14 week proposal with 12 games (not a 14 game proposal), giving the athletes an extra bye week.

This will, if passed, likely result in what is being referred to as Week Zero being the slot where the majority of the FBS vs FCS games are played, opening up what is currently the first week of the season for more appetizing P5 vs P5 out of conference match-ups. At some point in the future it might be determined that the extra bye week isn't necessary based on some type of analysis comparing number of injuries that took place with a one bye week season versus a two bye weeks season but that isn't what the current legislation is about. But if that is proven the case over time, it would be a 13 game regular season and not a 14 game regular season. As mentioned by someone in this thread, if we get to a 14 game regular season, then it likely means the conference championships game will end. What replaces them is a whole another discussion. ;-)

Cheers,
Neil

This article from SUA certainly makes it sound like Dungey is the starter and the question is which of the rest of the QBs on the team will be the back up.

Finally some proof that Rex Culpepper is alive.

No one else was worried?

Kevin Mason was also better, IMO. Meaning you had McNabb, Johnson, Downing & Mason on the 1994 squad (with two of them redshirting).

Thanks Neil...that is what I thought so...but I figured this was a competing proposal. 12 over 14 weeks is actually ok in my opinion if the extra week is on the front side.

There's a rule proposal which would allow someone to play up to 4 games and still redshirt even if he wasn't injured.

You could give a frosh a 3-4 game tryout and he'd still have 4 years of eligibility left.

Or, you could play a frosh in a bowl game at the end of the year and he'd still have 4 years left.

WOW! Monumental and very player friendly. Would be great. Will be great.

I agree. You and I are the same class Chip, and I met McNabb in the tunnel after a basketball game in 1994. It was then that I learned he was the likely QB next football season.
