Day Three Fall Camp: Wed., August 2, 2017

There are so many variables to him playing or Red shirting it makes my head spin . One of the biggest is the potential for the possibility of the rule change for next year . If so I play him 2nd half game one and get reps and give babers confidence in him . Plus if ED goes down he has at least something to draw on , and then play him any chance you can in either way blow outs to gain experience. Say he beat ED out next spring and got the shirt this year everybody and rightfully so would say how can you trust him over ED with no game experience?
Also if ED keeps his job TD can take a shirt next year and have experience for his RS sophomore year ... or if he is wowing people after 3 days what's gonna happen in a month when everything slows down ??? The answer is there is no answer but things are looking up for the cuse QB 's .
What rule change next year?

What rule change next year?

There's a rule proposal which would allow someone to play up to 4 games and still redshirt even if he wasn't injured.

You could give a frosh a 3-4 game tryout and he'd still have 4 years of eligibility left.

Or, you could play a frosh in a bowl game at the end of the year and he'd still have 4 years left.

Just because it's really hard doesn't mean that really talented kids don't rush toward that option. He's got the kind of talent that creates changes on depth charts and advisors that are driven by his potential.

I just don't see him around for 5 years. He's good, SU' s offense will make him great, and either my family's favorite player, Eric Dungey, will have an incredible year and move on, or he'll get dinged up and give TD a chance to play. I don't think the Devito' s are interested in a red shirt.

It's all a crapshoot, but personally, I just don't see a long career for Dungey or Devito at SU. They're great players and will have options. All power to them and I'd be tickled if either one is a Senior QB at SU.

I don't know as much about the mechanics of football as many here, but do think that in the same way we've had a streak of basketball players leave early, we have football players that can have incredible seasons in Babers' system, with dynamic opportunities as a result. I have to think Devito is one of those guys.
Do you think it's guaranteed ED jumps to the league if he has a great year? I don't think it's that simple. We all know this offense can make a good QB look great and scouts know that too. I think ED can put up great numbers without demonstrating he can make all the throws to be a high draft pick. That would be enough to keep him in school. I could see a Major Applewhite/Chris Simms situation happening next year. If that were the case, it would be an awesome problem to have.

That proposal has significant backing. Believe it's being voted on later this year. Also talking about a 14 game season. I'm of the mindset that the 2 will pass together. (We're adding 2 games...BUT... we're giving significant opportunities to the student. But really about $$) Love the red shirt part.

Other proposals. An underclassmen doesn't need to be released to transfer. If a student transfers for academic reasons, he still sits out a year, but does NOT loose the year of eligibility..

Of all of them, I'm guessing, at least, the new redshirt rule passes. Take this ED/TD conversation... TD can get 4 games, without burning his shirt. PERFECT, for both the coach, and the athlete. (Especially on the recruiting front.. Red shirt? No prob...it's a 4 game bonus)

i have no problem with burning td's red shirt if he is that good. we need to play the best players and are not in a position to play for the future. if we win games we think we r supposed to games, plus an upset or two the future will begin to take care of itself.

Really, a 14 game season? Which would extend well into December, close to finals, which is the reason they say they push bowl games to late December? That doesn't make much sense.

Or they start the season earlier.

Mid-August? That doesn't make much sense either. Really, they should just do away with the finals excuse. Baseball goes through finals and you never hear any complaints.

you kinda know what to expect with last years backup QB in a game.. you dont know with TD yet. but really if he is good enough to be the number 2 then play him like the number 2 and if its time to get in a game and throw then the RS goes out the window. if its just to hand off the first 3 weeks then dont play him.. LSU game and on it starts to get more dicey.

we need QB play at a high level not just this year but 2-3-4 yrs from now and we better have 1-2 more guys in the pipeline because no matter what ED only has 2 yrs at most so holding TD back for 2019 doesnt really help unless we have some talent in the wings and playing him early probably helps with that situation.

i hope ED throws for 4500 and 35+ and TD plays and throws for another 1000 and 10.. then i think we will really be smiling,.

Will also say that when I was at practice, ED made a very conscious effort to slide every time he was out of the pocket. And that was practice two in only helmets.
Practice like you play to build good habits and good muscle memory.

It's just talk. The RS rule has the most support.(or so i've read)

That is what I'm thinking a 0 week game. Personally as a selfish fan...more is better. However, I think it is too many games on the players. They have classes and life outside Football. Jim Brown played 8 to 9 game seasons (including bowl games) over 3 seasons. A player today could play more games than he played in his entire collegiate career in 2 seasons. Keep the season at 12 games.

i think I just needed practice to get here and for him to do his thing , and to be patient and I have no patience lol . im excited to see how much clearer he will see things in the next few weeks when it slows down for him even more mentally

My lone concern about TD playing this season in meaningful game time is the o-line that is in front of him. Not fair for an 18, 19 year kid at 200 lbs to get hit hard and often.

Or a 20, 21, 22, or 23 year old.

Agreed. My point is that the 21, 22 year old most likely has 2-3 years of collegiate strength and conditioning while the former doesn't. And we have an unproven (though potentially very good) offensive line.

As you know high schools in the south start their seasons in August. Maybe that is where the thought of 14 games is coming from.

And when do the high schools in Texas start their football seasons?

I am very excited about TD, but are people really putting him in the NFL before taking a college snap? Do people realize how hard it is to make the league, even for very good college QB's?

Come on... You're not new here. This has been an annual rite of passage since the 1999 Spring Game Massacre.

That was my thought as well. If it's meaningful snaps and the oline doesn't allow him to get beat to death, play him. If it's just to hand off and/or the oline can't protect him, give him a year in the S&C program to go along with a maturing oline that plans to add at least one stud next year. All of this is assuming, of course, that he is the clear #2 guy.

And when do the high schools in Texas start their football seasons?

End of August. Playoffs run through December. 6 weeks of playoffs.

I'm just saying that they continue to argue that the bowls can't be played sooner than end of December because of finals, yet they want to extend the season by two weeks which presumably would be the first 2 - 3 weeks of December. Their argument isn't reconciling with past practice.
