Day Three Fall Camp: Wed., August 2, 2017

Oh we had an Internet back then...there was a guy who used to go to the open practices and report back to about 20 of us back then. He had a strange name like RRLTrump or something...wonder what happened to him. Legend has it he died after the '98 NCST game.

He went into witness protection after the infamous "Spotwood" incident. :p

If TD plays this season, he won't be around for 2021.

Honestly, how many of you are worried about the 2021 season right now?
But think if that happened how huge it would be for DB as this is the only guy he ever picked to be able to recruit studs in the future

Everything is just so different than back in 94. I don't ever remember thinking I hope that true freshman McNabb gets on the field. I mean, I didn't even know who he was until that spring game at the end of his true freshman season. Recruiting just wasn't covered like that. (Gulp, I don't even think there was much of an internet. I'm 43 and feel like I'm 83 just by saying that).

It will really just depend on the game and situation. If Dungey gets hurt against one of the 3 super heavyweights (LSU, Clemson, FSU), you're going to see the Officer. He's been in those games. TD won't get thrown into that mess against those DL. You could probably say Miami too given their front 7 (NOTE I didn't say they're a powerhouse).

If it's an injury that's early on in any of the other 8, good chance you see TD, because he'd have time to get in a rhythm and help us best win.

I think there's 0% chance that TD redshirts. Would be nice to have a 5th year guy like McNabb 98, but can't imagine it will happen. Especially if he's impressing early in camp.

0% chance? Can we route for ED to stay healthy? The kid deserves a break. Reading the tea leaves last season, it sounds like ED could have played, may have been cleared by other, more qualified medical staffs. As long as he is healthy, he is our qb. So, why not route for Ed to play the whole season and kill it while TD takes a shirt and then starts for 3 years down the road?

Rooting for something and believing that something will happen are two completely different things.

I'd love it if ED took every snap and TD redshirted.

I know, i get it. ED hasn't proven he can stay on the field for 12 games. Hopefully, this year is the year.

If Dungey plays all year then we will have a good season, because it means he will have played well.. if he gets hurt who knows what happens.. if someone plays better then that also means we probably have a good season since I dont think he will play and play poorly.

Ok...I love that TD is starting to show out and creating a good problem for the team. But does anyone else find it a little weird that repeatedly, there is little to no mention of Rex Culpepper in any of these stories?
I have no dog in the fight, I just want the best players to emerge. But Rex Culpepper is either becoming a major non-factor, or TD is just THAT good. What gives, I wonder?

Based on comments in other threads, seems like Culpepper is at best a backup skill-wise

I kind of think those that want TD to red shirt so he's around for five years are going to be disappointed. In five years he's going to be in the NFL, whether he plays or sits on the bench at SU. Therefore, we should play our best QB...I love Dungey and want him to succeed, but if and when he gets dinged up or if TD passes him in value to SU on the field, he should play if he's our best option. The better players we recruit are going to have limited time in college football and we should enjoy them while we can, including Devito. If he's still around in five years, he's not the player we think he is.

I think y'all just need to be happy that there is finally depth at the QB position...whoever is the starter.
It's so cool to have multiple options...

Cuss football has had a QB depth problem for most of the last 20 years. This feels wonderfully foreign.

This article from SUA certainly makes it sound like Dungey is the starter and the question is which of the rest of the QBs on the team will be the back up.

(This board) We have multiple QB's? Depth?!

PLAY ALL THE QB's!!

I'm not sure it's that clean. I mean, IMO, this is a program that needs to be able to develop talent AND develop depth. To me, a redshirt year is important on both of these fronts for as many recruits as possible. I mean, obviously McNabb could have played as a true frosh but he was a guy who got better each year and stayed for five years (not sure that would happen today, but developmentally it certainly seemed to help him).

I don't know -- it's hard to say b/c it's a different era of college sports but I think this program's only chance to feel like it has a shot at loftier goals than say a Pinstripe Bowl appearance and 4th place finish in their division is by getting back to trying to get kids a year to develop before running them out on the field. That's not to say they couldn't play and contribute, but that it helps with their development.

Having said that, as was pointed out in an earlier post, even the best programs seem to be playing more true freshmen these days.

It's a different era as you said and unfortunately because coaches don't last 5 years before they get whacked they can't wait until their first class of kids are 4th year juniors or 5th year seniors.

I am very excited about TD, but are people really putting him in the NFL before taking a college snap? Do people realize how hard it is to make the league, even for very good college QB's?

Seriously.

Yep, P killed him with a trident.

Yeah, no. This isn't USC, we don't put second string quarterbacks in the NFL. Love the optimism but lets just take a deep breath. Hopefully we don't see TD in a game until 2018.

Just because it's really hard doesn't mean that really talented kids don't rush toward that option. He's got the kind of talent that creates changes on depth charts and advisors that are driven by his potential.

I just don't see him around for 5 years. He's good, SU' s offense will make him great, and either my family's favorite player, Eric Dungey, will have an incredible year and move on, or he'll get dinged up and give TD a chance to play. I don't think the Devito' s are interested in a red shirt.

It's all a crapshoot, but personally, I just don't see a long career for Dungey or Devito at SU. They're great players and will have options. All power to them and I'd be tickled if either one is a Senior QB at SU.

I don't know as much about the mechanics of football as many here, but do think that in the same way we've had a streak of basketball players leave early, we have football players that can have incredible seasons in Babers' system, with dynamic opportunities as a result. I have to think Devito is one of those guys.
