I want to qualify this by stating up front that I am a Shafer supporter, and I actively want to see this coaching staff succeed.
That said, feels unseemly--because it has happened two other times prior [Lindor, Dawson]. I certainly do NOT fault the coaches for having second thoughts after injuries, illnesses, etc. Their job is to build the best roster that they can. But if you aren't sure about a prospect, at least be up front with them so that they aren't swinging in the breeze. And in some cases, if you are unsure about a kid commiting, then don't allow him to commit. That is far less worse than accepting the commitment and then dropping a kid via pocket veto later on by not communicating with them for a long time.
In this case--and this is total speculation on my part--the staff is doing very well on the recruiting trail. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that given everything that's derailed Ginneti to this point, that they might want to make use of that extra scholarship in a class where we're low on scholarships [2016], but recruiting better players.
