Class of 2022 DE Malachi Davis (MI) Portal to Rutgers

I’m always curious to know why kids choose other schools especially a non-power conference school
I get being curious. I just don't expect anyone to talk about what happened 4 years ago, especially if it wasn't a positive for the player and it happened under the previous coaching staff.

Nice - It’s been so quiet on the portal recruiting front, nice to see some smoke popping up for guys were actually targeting.
Given the change in portal window this year, it really needs to be quiet. Everything is happening behind the scenes and it’ll be quiet till the window officially opens. Then you’ll see a ton of moves announced.

Not to say this kid wouldn't help, I am sure he would, but 3rd team Mac, I hope we make a bigger splash, because our Dline was brutal last year.

The thing with our Dline is most graduate and we need like 4-5 players
3rd team MAC is better then most we had in 2025
I know for some reason the MAC gets a really bad name but go look at the stats the 1st team Dlineman put up in the MAC
His 5.5 sacks would have lead the team
I do agree we need big splashs here and this is a good to great start if we do sign him

I understand your point but he knows the system and at worst appears to be a nice rotational piece.
Maybe it came across as disparaging, which isn't really my intention, I hope the kid comes here and is a difference maker, however I just hope we allocate a large percentage of our NIL on proven power 4 difference makers on the Dline, easier said then done obviously, but I would say we need a complete revamp on the D-line because other then QB that was our biggest weakness.

Yes, but -

Our new DC has been *very* successful running his D without proven P4 difference makers on the D-line.

So maybe we don’t have to just throw $ at ‘name’ DL players, and he & Fran can find us the guys that work for his system.

Possibly but not completely sure about that. OL says hold my beer. Or I think maybe we were double fisting beers.

We are smart with our NIL, see Pena, and they are not gonig to throw a ton of money at this kid. He can come here with his coach and show off his skills to try to propel that into a shot at the NFL. That alone is a pretty good sales pitch and doesn't use all our NIL.

He's probably an upgrade. Our defense doesn't have anyone who's even honorable mention ACC.

no arguing with that, I have had this debate with others I think that was the worst D-Line performance for an entire season I have seen in 30 years.

Not too long ago, SU Athletics announced that Syracuse football was hiring Toledo defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Vince Kehres as the Orange's new defensive coordinator. Might Davis follow Kehres to the Hill? That remains to be seen.

Former Syracuse football pledge Malachi Davis plans to enter the transfer portal. The transfer portal in Division I football will be open from January 2 to January 16. Davis hails from Holt, Mich. During the 2025 campaign for Toledo, Davis tallied 19 solo tackles, 36 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for a loss, 5.5 sacks, one forced fumble, eight quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. Google

NOTE: Coach Curt Cignetti brought 13 players with him from James Madison University (JMU) to Indiana for the 2024 season, a significant group including key offensive and defensive players who helped transform the Hoosiers' roster and culture almost overnight. These former Dukes followed Cignetti via the transfer portal, providing immediate experience and familiarity to the program. Google//** Perhaps KEHRES MAY HAVE MORE PLAYERS FOLLOWING HIM TO SU!

My family and I have ST to Toledo football. I'm not an X & O guy and go to the games to spend time with my family, but this years defense was noticeably overwhelming at times. Especially the defensive line during passing situations. Got to see Michael Johnson Jr. when Akron came to town. I actually felt bad for him. It felt like he got hit/sacked every time he dropped back to pass. There were games where Toledo had more penalty yards than the other team had total offensive yards going into the 4th quarter before they put in the 2nd and 3rd stringers. I'm really excited about this hire. He seems to be a great DC and has head coaching experience that can help Fran in making better decisions in game.

Still need solid guys who can help teach d on field and still produce.
