Defense wins championships

So WoadBlue what do you think about your new/old coach? Do you think he can turn things around at UNC?
In recruiting he already has. Fedora seemed nearly indifferent to recruiting on the D side, and players stayed away. Mack is reeling in quality prospects.

I also like his 2 coordinators, especially DC Bateman, who came from Army.

We are coming off a 2 win season preceded by a 3 win season. We lack depth at most positions, and we have nearly a entire team that has never won in college. Our QB corps is made up of a true freshman and 2 redshirt freshmen.

We should win no more than 4, maybe 5 with a dose of luck. But 6 wins would not be a great surprise to me. And the future looks bright.

I hope his coordinators keep him up with the times cause at Texas he had soooooo much talent and stopped winning and it seemed the new college football passed him bye. I ain’t 100 percent positive of that but that’s how it looks. He always has brought in talent.

That has always been the only real drawback for Mack, keeping him from winning more than he has. At UNC, he floundered with OCs.

I think the end of his time in Austin was a fairly normal mild depression after a failure that hurt very deeply. Mack knew that his teams with Colt McCoy at QB were what he had hoped to build: he had 9 consecutive teams win at least 10 games. But the media ragged on him about winning only 1 National Championship and only 2 Conference Championship Games. After the 2005 Title team, many in the media predicted a downslide, often focusing on the fact that he would play a freshman QB (either RS Jevan Snead or true freshman Colt McCoy).

McCoy won the job, and Snead would eventually transfer to Ole Miss (and have 2 very good seasons). McCoy was what Vince Young was not: a coach on the field type. And his 4 years were built up to another National Championship team. But an injury to McCoy during the game made certain that Bama won.

Brown seemed then to have lost focus, and he has admitted that is what happened. He brooded over that lost National Championship, in part because he wanted to see McCoy go out the big winner, in part because he wanted to prove he could win it all without a freak of an athlete for the media to focus on.

He never got it back.

Brown never stopped loving Chapel Hill. He met his (2nd ) wife there - she was in real estate design, also divorced when they were introduced by a UNC basketball booster. She never stopped loving Chapel Hill.

My fear was that Mack would not be able to have his head back on, but what I've seen with his coordinator hires soothed me. He has never run a Air Raid before, but he thinks that is what is best for UNC - I agree with that. He knew the UNC D has sucked, and he got the Army DC who has shown he can build a unit that is better on the field than the sum of its parts suggests.

Thanks for the background that I'm sure few of us here knew. A strong UNC football team would be very good for the Acc so I hope he can get it done. So far, I envy the recruiting success Mack has had.

DB's are definitely too low.
We have quantity, quality, leadership, & experience - with an All American safety.
I find it hard to believe that SEVEN other ACC teams are somehow better in that regard??

LB's may have the ability to move up, but totally fair starting point for them.

Amazing what Dino & crew have accomplished in their 3 seasons here.

Miami is subpar at: QB, OLine, WR, and ST's - but somehow considered the best team in the Coastal, and by many pundits better than SU overall in the ACC??

Wake - secretly sneaky good.

Based purely on proven returning talent the OL is way overrated and the DB is way underrated. Everything else looks pretty reasonable, although I'd still put Clemson and Miami ahead of our DL since we're losing a lot of double teams and experience without Slayton.

I would say tie with Clemson and as I have said before our dline is gonna murder people. I keep saying it but Ruff is different than Slayton in the way they play. Slayton will hold a double in one spot where Ruff is explosive and will get past first blocker. He won’t stop doubles all the time but he will make more plays overall . Black is one of the best looking dline men I have seen in body fat percentage. Kids a beast and if Williams makes progress like I think he will we are gonna be freaking awesome barring injury.

I love the enthusiasm. I just hope TD has secret service protection from now until he graduates... or until we at least have a backup we can get excited about.

Part of last year Td was coming to throw the hell out of the ball. We had no other way to win. The big thing I see is we had a run game but some teams would still only stack box with 6 guys which should be a run choice every time and we did ok but not enough to make them put 7 in the box to open up the pass. This year with serv at tackle Davis guard 340 Heckel 310 c Adams at 350 and who ever at rt. That’s a mofo big ass line. Also Adams will turn into a stud. Him and Neal will be amazing this year which opens everything for TD. He will be protected more so because last year it didn’t seam that we had a ton of hot reads when teams were blitzing. I think they figured Ed feet would get him out of it and not to say Td s can’t but let him sling it. I can’t wait for this team to play aggressive lights out o and d and specials. The pieces are there now we have to fit them together and stay healthy. Go orange.

Bingo ! Give this man a cigar !

Yep, having the ability to run the ball will make TD's transition a much smoother more efficient process. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 60/40 run to pass ratio...especially early in the season.

The run pass will depend on our O line . Balance is always the goal . We will have much different passing options installed that much I can tell you

Mack lost the team when they struggled. They didn't buy in to the new stuff...struggled and basically quit or played for themselves at Texas. He had a lot of highly ranked HS players that didn't have the stomach for getting punched hard and losing...too used to winning and getting their way. I don't think he'll have that problem at UNC as discipline was a huge issue at UT.
