Sure, but the coaches decided to not play him the first 8 games this season, right? Keeping him out so everyone, program and player included, has an option to redshirt seems like a reasonable thing to do.

There is nothing wrong in getting your masters with a five year stay.

Why not at least keep the possibility open?
He can still leave after 3 or 4 years anyway, IF he's good enough, or for whatever other reasons.

95%+ of these kids aren't going Pro, and having a free 5th year of college is an incredible (potential) opportunity.

if the kid doesnt want to go to school for 5 yrs then saving a yr means nothing.. he could also RS a different yr. He started a yr late so maybe he doesnt need/want the 5th yr. not every kid wants to go to grad school.

Outside of a few changes, this has been basically the same depth chart all season.
Dino probably assigns this task to a Graduate Assistant coach.
