Devo’s Comments

Someone said something to him because this is a 180 from earlier in the year when he called our games.

Or maybe he knows what everyone is thinking and just doesn't see the need to pile on? Still 2 months left in the season. What's there to say at this point we all know the team is a flaming pile of garbage and unwatchable and the coaching is beyond poor.

I'd fire the entire staff and give him the job on an interim basis next week if we lose to GT or BC.

Would he? The guy never played a lick of defense and was at the core of some notoriously soft teams.

He could yap and make layups with both hands. The former would play great with the current team, but I'm not sure anyone on this roster is capable of the latter.
All true but he could help with the untucked jersey problem. We definitely lead the country in re-tucks.

That’s not true. You’ve lost all perspective 15 plus years out. Devo played hard (he probably played too much at times). He was not a great defender by lockdown standards but he’s Bruce Bowen compared to these dudes. Plus he had fire. We have zero

Yeah, I dunno - Devo was definitely more critical in prior games.

His comments sounded a bit scripted to me - like someone told him to circle the wagons for Red.

But who from and why would that order come down now??

If we can't afford to buy out Red this year, maybe that's what he is saying we have no clue about??

It's definitely a message you start repeating if Red is back no matter what next year and you need to try and soften up the fanbase for that reality.

It will be interesting to see what he says in future games called, as this will become a drumbeat message if that is the case.

It would be very Syracuse to hire a legacy coach with no HC experience and NOT have an economical buyout clause based on poor performance.

I think pitch forks coming out for Red from inside the program and his friends this early might make the buyout harder.

Its early January let him try and win some games.

Of course on here we are not going to say that and privately I doubt that is consensus but we aren't even half way through the season. Announcers make game plans for their call Devo clearly went into FSU wanting to defend his friend and pump JJ's tires.

If GT and BC are non competitive losses Wildhack needs to act quickly and get an interim in so we can save some face and maybe win a couple down the stretch. Miami has an advantage on us bc they can already negotiate and hire the next guy.

It's not losing that is the problem.

It's how we are losing and the fact that we're not competitive.

We're not even competitive against pedestrian and poor teams.

i.e. We are really bad.

If we were more competitive and some modicum of coached improvement and improved team effort was evident, there would be more patience and pitchforks would still be in the shed.

I think that initially, Devo was critical as he thought the team is better and could play better. However, at this point in the season he sees just what we see, that what we have is, not a team that can win games. Why beat a dead horse. There is no reason to do so.

We have limited guard play with Carlos in the line-up. We have poor spacing overall and our 3 point shooters either don't shoot or miss open shots.

I watched Rutgers vs. Wisconsin yesterday. Rutgers got Derkack from Merrimack (who was POY in that conference). He contributes off the bench. No way Carlos should be a starter for us from that type of conference either.

I have to accept that this team is the worst team I have seen from Syracuse since I became a fan in 1980. I hope to see them win (in person) in BC this weekend. We have a chance to be a .500 conference team but only with better guard play and better defenders. We have a stud in Freeman. Play him 30+ per game and sit him for a breather or foul troubles. He is averaging a double double as a freshman. Like the fact we are starting to foul people going to the basket in the lane. Playing defense its called. I'm expecting a post-season.

Go CUSE.

Why do so many people care about Devo defending Red? I have no problem with it. Of course it’s out of love and loyalty. Let’s move on from this.

For me, it was the "...fans have no clue what's going on behind the scenes..." comment.

Last time Devo said something like that, Urinalgate occurred, Benny was booted, and the whole drama of loss of control of certain players mantra become public discussion.

Maybe it was just a rallycry comment made in passing this time though and not significant.

I was more alarmed by Devo's open cheering for SU during the FSU game. His homerism was completely inappropriate for a supposed impartial color commentator. If Devo really wants to go that route in his career he needs to stop doing SU games until he can do it impartially. It's OK for people to know what school he played at but openly yelling "YES!" when a shot is made is way way way unprofessional for anyone other than a team employed announcer. Now, if the ACCN/ESPN is using team employed announcers, that's also on them.

Devo played in a different era, when players seemed a little more autonomous. I feel a little bit like an old man shaking his fist at the clouds, but I think coaches nowadays need to coach effort.

He’s improving rapidly

Yes, and whether that statement is true or not its another example that the job is too big for Red.

A good head coach is able to manage all of that, the ones that fail use that as an excuse, it speaks to, theres too much going on that Red cant handle all of it, he doesnt have control of it, he's not powerful enough to get it taken care of etc. When you think about its not an endorsement, its a sign of failure on his record. Smart fans know this, for some it will go right over their head and they will continue to make excuses.

The first thing he said, about roster turnover and portal and new guys. Welcome to college basketball buddy, this is normal, everybody has to deal with this.

This isnt Lane Kiffin inheriting USC football with the loss of 30 scholarships over 3 years, which was a legit excuse and that guy got fired on the tarmac midseason with a 28-15 record. Yet we try to make up or create excuses out of thin air when they are just examples that illustrate the job is too big for him.

Devo's right that we don't know what goes on behind the scenes (beyond what select posters volunteer), but that's a non-sequitor. The main focus of the complaints has been the performance on the court.

But few things grind my gears like being talked down to by a program mouthpiece, whether it's a coach, GM/AD or in this case an announcer close to the program. To make a Clint Eastwood reference, 'Don't (spit) down my back and tell me it's raining."

the problem i had was yesterday in cuse sports talk he defended himself by saying :
“he is doing the best with what he has”. that is the issue i have. it’s not pre 2020 anymore man. where you are stuck with guys you recruit. you can and are expected to turn around a team of this level with one year, and two for red.

sure he can’t go out and shoot for them but good coach identify players that can play in the system he wants.

he should be able to identify JC isn’t a p5 starting guard , he should be able to tell we can’t shoot threes if he brings this group of guys in.

thats the issue i have. he is the one creating this team therefore it’s his team and the blame is rightfully so on red.

take last year for example. we were solid , we lost some games we could’ve won and maybe go for the tourney.

but what stood out ? poor shooting - poor defense still . it hasn’t gotten better. he isn’t learning from last year.

if we take it from that perspective , i see a coach that can’t create a high school level offense , i see a coach that can’t get guys that play semi good defense.

it's delusional. He's supposed to be an impartial sportscaster/announcer/color comm - not defending a pile of turd excuse for coaching. Our team - the past two years - looks either 1) lost [see inbounds], 2) selfish [see Judah], and 3) unprepared [see blowout losses]. Losing Maliq was the thing that stung the most (worst) for me.

This is a new era of college sports.
It's not four-years-let's-see-how-it-goes.
It's every year. We're being steamrolled. By borderline programs.

We're KenPom 125, with no chance of moving up.

What's there to defend?

Oh come on. Thats a dumb odd tournament. Is he ready to be a head coach no. But I’d rather have his fire on the bench than the three that sit on their hands
"dumb odd tournament" or not, his behavior was immature and inappropriate. You only have to act the part if the spotlight is on?

I think we can do better - plenty of guys out there with fire and toughness.
