Not sure if anyone else caught this, and he wouldn't specify how he knew this, but last night during the post-game Devo said he knows for a fact that if Red or GMac were to get the gig next they would switch to man as the primary D.

My inclination is to go national, and replace one marquis name with another, but if we decide to go internal, at least this would make it tolerable.

I caught it, not sure I believe it.

What else did he say about the current conundrum we are in?

Probably why JB said they would play man this yr prior to the season - beginning the transition. If there was a wager to take I still think it’s Red with Gmac as his loyal #2 and paid similar to a mid major HC to stay.

We’d need a brand new roster b/c the current group can’t play man.
So you're saying that our current roster can't play m2m. After the last 2 games it looks like they can't play zone either. It's not like these guys didn't play man somewheres prior to putting on a cuse uniform. I find it hard to believe that this group can not play man (If properly coached on it).

I would have much rather seen than hire from the outside.

However, I’d rather see GMac get the HC position if they are absolutely going that route.

Perhaps Red as coach with Hop as a highly paid assistant being that he's a very good recruiter.

I’ve mentioned this before, but unlike Hop, Red coached man at VT under Seth Greenberg. Griff has coached man at previous stops as well. Assuming that Red would keep Griff on the staff, I am confident that we could transition to man without a lot of effort if it is what Red wanted to do. And I think he would want to.

That would be the first thing they would have to say to even try to sell this to the fanbase...

Not that anyone really cares what I think, but here goes...

I am not 100% against giving Adrian Autry a shot at being head coach. He is the associate head coach. Gerry McNamara is not. Therefore, if there was a person on the staff who should get the first crack, it is Autry.

I am skeptical of what kind of job he will do. He's been on staff for over a decade, been a part of some really good teams, but also been the top assistant for some of the worst teams in recent memory.

However, I also do wonder how much JB has hamstrung all of our coaches' abilities to not only implement new ideas and systems on offense & defense, but also recruit different student-athletes to fit those different schemes. I am sure both of those guys - Autry & McNamara - have differing views on certain aspects of the program than the head coach. I think that's natural for any type of hierarchy.

Where I struggle the most is this: as a group, they have not gotten the job done for the last 9 years in the regular season. It is BY FAR the longest string of double-digit loss seasons in history. Every single one of them (outside the COVID-shortened year) were double digit losses in the REGULAR SEASON. At what point do you need to blow the thing up and start anew?

I realize other programs have been worse off over the last 9 years, and that we are a bit spoiled in regards to consistent winning. But we have severely underperformed where the standard for Syracuse basketball should be for damn near a decade now. So I can see why many are saying we need to go outside the "family" and start anew.

There’s different ways to play man depending on your roster. You adjust your man principles based on their abilities.

I'm sure Red or Gerry would change the D. Who cares? Every basketball coach on Earth can coach man defense (save for one, apparently) and would change up what we do.

This should not be the primary criteria for hiring a new coach!
