Devo claims Red and GMac would switch to man

Wasn't this said about Hop as well?
Yeah, and based on his comments a couple of years ago, no thanks.
Will there be systematic Xs and Os tweaks you really emphasize over the summer?

I think our defense has been proven. We had to enhance our length and athleticism, which makes the zone great
, and I felt like we have done that. Offensively, when you make shots, it’s different. We might have to generate a little bit more offense out of our defense.

Everybody keeps talking about what defense to play. I’m more interested in how the offense is going to change.
Thank you.

The obsession with the Zone masks our perpetual biggest problem for years... our offense sucks.

I kinda agree, but I think they're hand-in-hand. I don't particularly care for either one. The best parts of the offense in the past, for me, was the fast breaks and transition scoring off of turnovers and blocks, which comes out of the zone.

Yeah, yeah, look, let's just call a spade a spade here - it's a lot to overcome having a smallish guard at the top of the zone, and we've started a smallish guard at the top for a long time. I still think the zone can be a formidable defense with a lineup engineered for it. We don't have that now.

But when I look at what we do on offense, a lot of it lacks purpose. Other teams just run crisper sets. Screens are better, cuts are harder. There's intention there we just don't have.

This is why I'm bullish that we can be good again. The problems are fixable.

Or rather... they can be.

That's fair. The worst thing about recent editions of the zone is how damn passive it is, and that lethargy seems to bog down our O.

I hate how we play with so little intensity on both ends of the floor.

But when a team is constructed around guards who don't play good D and can't really run... we get what we get.

I don't think we know that. They haven't been drilled on the defense. They probably wouldn't be real good but let's fact it, they don't play zone very well either.
I think it was sarcasm. JB keeps saying this team can’t play man, which makes no sense to anyone

Internal isn't an option we are too close to Georgetown level right now.

Red and Gerry can go ANYWHERE and if they win as head coach they get pole position to replace JBs replacement. Go earn it and prove yourselves.

Thank you.

The offense is stale, yes, and should be a lot better. But the defense has been much worse for about 4 seasons now, if you look at KenPom’s efficiency metrics. We were a top 30 offense in 2021 and even last year it was around the same. The sub-100 defense is what’s killing us. It was sub-200 last season! Even this year, with better athletes, it’s very bad.

Red is a far better candidate then GMac. More experience and a better recruiter.

When I look at the roster, I don't think that being a better recruiter than GMac really moves the needle.

Actually it does. Jesse would likely foul it in 10 minutes playing man. Joe would struggle mightily against bigger 2s. I thin Judah, Maliq and Benny would be much stronger playing man.

I’ve mentioned this before, but unlike Hop, Red coached man at VT under Seth Greenberg. Griff has coached man at previous stops as well. Assuming that Red would keep Griff on the staff, I am confident that we could transition to man without a lot of effort if it is what Red wanted to do. And I think he would want to.
I don’t see Gerry staying under Red. Would expect him to get a HC gig somewhere.

Griff stays and Red gets another assistant.

Preferably a big man coach who has the name of every AAU coach on his contact list.

I would love to see Devo as a coach, I think he’d be excellent, especially connecting to the players. Unfortunately, with his history I’m not sure if he would get hired.

I know he does a lot of camps for the younger kids locally. Stuff like that has to help? His issues were an awful long time ago.

I think he’d be worth taking a shot on, in the right situation.
