Dino Babers

There's never any guarantees, but I do like that Babers volunteered that this is a destination job for him. Hope he follows the Briles model, as he has mentioned him as someone who had the greatest influence on him. I also think he really likes the Dome.

It's like he was just handed a gift no one at SU has bothered to open yet.

Destination job , dream job , meh. It's a press conference , not a testimony under oath in a court of law. IF he does well and turns things to winning fast , are people going to trash him if he takes a 6 mill. job , like they did to Doug. This is still a somewhat free country.

No one trashed Doug just because he decided to take an NFL job. But if that's what you want to think then enjoy.

When all the assistants suddenly went with him, that's when people got upset.

Some of you guys act like he just stood up there and said its a dream of mine to be coaching here. It was a little more involved than that, and it wasn't just on his press conference. Most of us just found that part to be funny when he left. When he took all the assistants with him, it didn't come off like a guy who cared too much about his alma mater.

In the end, he probably didn't want SU to do all that well after he left, helps his sainthood story.

Well, there were some 'Dream job' and 'Binder' posts. Can't really say no one trashed him.

I mean the somewhat normal people.

People think he took the assistants to stick it to SU, rather than because he wanted them on his staff? Assistants following a coach is hardly unusual. He got those guys a promotion and more money too.

Coming from the folks that just hired a Head Coach that took 6 assistants from Bowling Green. We don't seem to be too concerned about that though because we are on the receiving end.

Can't have it both ways.

Perhaps. But Dino wasn't a BG alum who yapped about dream jobs. And he runs a VERY specialized system where staff continuity is critical. I think the situations are somewhat different.

Bowling Green was not Dino's Alma Mater nor his dream job.

Was Syracuse really Marrone's "dream job"? He may have stated as such but he was always destined to coach in the NFL no matter what he said. He was on the short list of HC candidates for several teams when he was hired here and no matter what was said he wasn't staying when the pinnacle of Football comes calling especially with much more money to throw around.

Another thing I heard was that if Harbaugh did not take the Michigan job, Marrone was on that short list as well to be HC for 3-4x the money SU could pay.

Bottom line, he was never staying here, just wasn't in the cards.

That's fine. But he said "dream job". He talked incessantly about his ties to SU. And he left the split second he could. So I never thought it was out of line to be a little ticked when he left and gutted the staff in the process.

Words have consequences.

If you believe any or all of that, good for you - I don't.

Dream job usually involves a dream AD to work under me thinks.

If he just said it was a dream job, that would be fine. He went on a two week tour laying it on much thicker than that.

'Every decision I've ever made in my career was about getting this job'

He's funny.

Right, the "he didn't know what he was getting into" thing.

I really don't care anymore.

I just find it funny when people are like "heavens to Betsy, why would anyone ever think a bad thought about Doug leaving?!".

He was selling HARD. Then sometime during the 2011 season he stopped selling, because he got discouraged or something.

Oh I agree. Just think the job was dreamy but the realities of the job sucked (primarily Gross).

Either way - doesn't matter.

The year-end losing streak had to kill him. Tough way to miss a bowl. Rumors that Gross told him he had to win in 2012. Don't know if it was true, but it wouldn't have been an unreasonable stance. Had 2012 been a similar result most would probably have wanted a change.

I believe that people say things that they mean at the time they say them, then things change.

There is not a lot of black and white in the world, but there is a ton of grey.

Agreed. For better or worse, Marrone left before the job was finished. There is no doubt that he made the team better, and took a program that was the dregs of the P5 and made them more competitive in year 1. The 2011 ups and downs are forgivable due to injuries, and we pissed away a Rutgers game that would have qualified us for three bowls in a row.

I don't think that anybody can begrudge him for leaving to take an NFL job. But as I recall, a lot of the hand wringing wasn't about his decision, but rather that the team was at a critical juncture after the 2012 season and was losing a lot of talent [in truth, the majority of the key offensive principals responsible for the prolific success experienced in 2012]. Adding to that uncertainty was the decimation of the staff.

Again, nobody begrudged him taking one of the 32 top jobs in his profession, the money associated with that, the prestige, etc. It was more about the condition that he left the team in, the staff being depleted, him leaving before the rebuild was "finished" and the results more sustainable, etc. Marrone left on a high note, but one where the team was teetering on the precipice, and could easily backslide. Guess what happened?

People make calculated decisions about their careers, it's not personal...it's business. Difficult for some to separate the 2 in this fanbase. Not surprising though with the milltown mentality around here. The savior came and left, lets crucify him ferevermore.

Clearly you didn't read or comprehend my post. Everything pretty much bypassed your brain.

Completely unfair post. Not that he needs me sticking up for him, but Scooch is one of the most level-headed, knowledgeable posters on this forum. ESPECIALLY when you take into account the rare perspective he brings to the dialogue as a function of his employer.

You might disagree with his take, but there's no reason to disparage his perspective.

Ira been said 99 times but...Pfft.

He had zero intentions of going to any NFL team as a HC. It wasn't just the "dream job" quote either. He had the binders which included info/data on SU, coaches, recruiting, etc as well as saying EVERY job he had ever taken was with the sole intent of getting ready to be the SU HC. He then did his world tour where he wasn't just selling SU but selling himself and his love for SU as an alum. You add all those things together and you get destination job.

Problem is he didn't do a great job with his homework. He should have known in advance that sucking up to donors, recruits, HS coaches, other alum etc was going to be a PITA. He should have also known about the realities of SU football.

I can have it both ways, actually.
