Dino on staff changes

As of this moment there are only 16 commits in the 2020 class. Still have 9 more spots maximum to fill.
I don’t think we are going to come close to filling out this class. I bet 3-4 more and that’s it. Feels like the strategy to wait until the bigger prospects decide might have been a mistake.

Based on Dino’s comments, it sounds like not only will the DC be changing, but a change to the whole scheme used on defense is also being seriously contemplated.

The ACC is a tough league for a DC. You have a bunch of teams that like to use 3 and 4 WR sets and feature great speed, and a bunch of teams that like to use power rush schemes, often with a traditional FB and sometimes with two TEs.

It seems to me that the teams that have the most success defending in this conference with mid level talent are the ones that rely heavily on man coverage and multiple blitz packages. These kinds of defenses are proactive instead of reactive and put a lot of pressure on the offense. These approaches have been very successful shutting down our offense this season, for example.

It is going to be very hard for us to have a defense that consistently puts pressure on the QB using 3 and 4 men fronts with little blitzing. I think, and this is just my opinion, Dino has realized the Tampa 2 can only be successful in this conference with very good talent and experience. There isn’t much margin for error. The QBs in this conference are good enough to tear it up too often. In short, we have to do something different.

I expect we will go In a completely different direction on defense, finding a DC who embraces an extremely aggressive, attacking style.

Regardless of who the new DC is, I think it is likely he is going to want to bring in at least a few coaches who he has worked with in the past and know his scheme well.

IMHO, Dino made some mistakes setting up his staff initially. He needed to get some coaches on the staff with strong ties to Northeast recruiting but he almost completely ignored geography starting out and our recruiting in the Northeast has suffered greatly as a result. Even the guys he got to recruit the Northeast, Beatty and Hart specifically, ended up leaving before making any impact on the recruiting trail.

He has made a couple of recent hires with more background in the NE. Hope we add a couple more guys with ties up here. It is fine to recruit Detroit and Chicago but our natural recruiting area is the Northeast, and we have to recruiting better here.

This is a major moment in the Babers era. Dino is wise to take his time and make sure he makes good choices. We had the talent and experience to be at least a mediocre defense this season. The total collapse of the unit must lie mostly on Ward’s shoulders and Dino made a move he had to make. Let’s hope he makes some good decisions rethinking his defense this time. I think he will.

Fran Brown. Fran. Brown

Oh great post by the way

They have to come sooner than that. Those coaches have to have the opportunity to find other work. I would expect we should see some changes this week or next.
I agree. Do you think those being removed already know?

I think Stanard, Swag, Reynolds, Ferri, and Lustig are safe.
I expect Martin will head back to Texas.
Ferri and Lustig could also leave on their own for pay increases.

Absolutely correct. The only evidence you need is Wake's last drive in regulation. We played a 4 man front, got ZERO pressure and Hartman (or whatever that sub's name is) chewed up the defense.

He was asked about it at the press conference, and he answered.

Or did you want Dino to "Boeheim" the poor reporter.

”We evaluate everything after the season, it’s something we do every year”

or

“There’s going to be some changes, there’s no doubt that”

ACC has a significant mix of open, pass oriented offenses and power run offenses. Defenses cannot be everything, unless you have exceptional talent. You’ve got to be something, you’re going to be less proficient at something. I don’t know what we need to be. But I feel like we’re close.

The incoming DC may well bring staff with him. So, no one is safe.

Looks about right to me. I would add Cavanaugh and put a question mark next to Martin. The OL is better but we're the top penalized team in the ACC for a reason and it's the endless parade of false starts and holding penalties which continue unabated. Martin may not be gone but he won't stay at QB. Babers will give him a choice to move to another position or go back to Texas. I think Lynch is going back to OL and no more OC responsibilities. At best co-OC.

Ultimately I think we get a new DC, OC, and QB coach.

Nah. I can see bringing in 2-3 transfers and 5-6 more kids. They will use full 25.

Besides losing 23 seniors, they will lose a couple kids through natural attrition

I'd rather say we evaluate our staff every year and leave it at that. Simple non-leading, honest answer.

Definitely need to add another good recruiter or two to the staff like Swag Daddy, having more talent and depth should raise our floor to a 6/7 win program on a yearly basis.

I thought we blitzed more yesterday than everyone is saying. But other than the early Mikel swing and miss, they were all picked up by Wake. I saw several plays where Trill, Jones, Williams were all picked up. Wake’s pass protection was very impressive.

We do probably need to get more creative with it though. Wake always seemed to know where it was coming from.

Changes elsewhere in our backyard may force Dino to move quicker than he might want to. If Shiano is back at Rutgers he needs to assemble a staff fast. If Franklin is perhaps headed to Florida state that could change the names of Northeast Recruiters and staffs that may or may not be available. There could be some openings from these current programs that free up coaches with strong northeast ties and also fit into what Dino wants. These two opening could also squeeze the market for coaches with Northeast ties. There could also be forced changes at Boston College even though the coach looks to survive.

So I looked up Fran brown. Why are we so super excited about him. Did I miss something. I can’t find anything in archives that make me scream hire him. What’s the reasoning.

we blitzed a ton and then not as much when the new QB came we went a long time with nothing but a few MLB blitzes

except for DC, im not sure he'll rush things. he may want to know who he can get before he lets guys go.

No way it will take until Feb for changes to come out. Guessing we will hear right after the early signing period when most of the work will be done. They may have 9 open slots right now but some will be filled by the early signing period and they are going to bring in some transfers. There will be attrition as well of course
25 is the limit per class. Attrition or no attrition. All transfers have to sit a year unless they are a grad transfer or a JUCO.

The new QB comes in needing to throw a decent amount of yards for a 1st down and we rush 3, drop back in to zone, and the backup sits back behind the line forever and then throws for a 1st down right down the middle. D play calling was more aggressive at times and then turtles up at the most important times. Feels like the offense does the same thing at times.

the subtle approach is a piece of coal in their stocking. bolder approach is a horses' head in their bed.

Any changes, or reshifting of the staff may not happen until after signing day in February. There is still recruiting to be done for the 2020 class and still a lot of changes to happen on staffs all over college football programs. The college coaches convention is usually in February may not hear anything about changes until then.

Agree with that logic, but for Dino to publicly say there will be changes I think it goes out the window. It's best to remove the uncertainty as early as possible, no? Don't know how many kids commit because of their prospective position coach, but why leave open the possibility of any negative recruiting if you can remove any doubt?
