Dino on staff changes

Based on Dino’s comments, it sounds like not only will the DC be changing, but a change to the whole scheme used on defense is also being seriously contemplated.

The ACC is a tough league for a DC. You have a bunch of teams that like to use 3 and 4 WR sets and feature great speed, and a bunch of teams that like to use power rush schemes, often with a traditional FB and sometimes with two TEs.

It seems to me that the teams that have the most success defending in this conference with mid level talent are the ones that rely heavily on man coverage and multiple blitz packages. These kinds of defenses are proactive instead of reactive and put a lot of pressure on the offense. These approaches have been very successful shutting down our offense this season, for example.

It is going to be very hard for us to have a defense that consistently puts pressure on the QB using 3 and 4 men fronts with little blitzing. I think, and this is just my opinion, Dino has realized the Tampa 2 can only be successful in this conference with very good talent and experience. There isn’t much margin for error. The QBs in this conference are good enough to tear it up too often. In short, we have to do something different.

I expect we will go In a completely different direction on defense, finding a DC who embraces an extremely aggressive, attacking style.

Regardless of who the new DC is, I think it is likely he is going to want to bring in at least a few coaches who he has worked with in the past and know his scheme well.

IMHO, Dino made some mistakes setting up his staff initially. He needed to get some coaches on the staff with strong ties to Northeast recruiting but he almost completely ignored geography starting out and our recruiting in the Northeast has suffered greatly as a result. Even the guys he got to recruit the Northeast, Beatty and Hart specifically, ended up leaving before making any impact on the recruiting trail.

He has made a couple of recent hires with more background in the NE. Hope we add a couple more guys with ties up here. It is fine to recruit Detroit and Chicago but our natural recruiting area is the Northeast, and we have to recruiting better here.

This is a major moment in the Babers era. Dino is wise to take his time and make sure he makes good choices. We had the talent and experience to be at least a mediocre defense this season. The total collapse of the unit must lie mostly on Ward’s shoulders and Dino made a move he had to make. Let’s hope he makes some good decisions rethinking his defense this time. I think he will.

Agreed regarding need for coaches who have northeast contacts.

We have better facilities. We have money. We have a great league. We have a charismatic HC. We will soon have a new Dome.

We got to step up our recruiting.

Michigan State went 7-6 last year, re-organized the entire coaching staff and went 6-6 this year. I wonder if there are any other incidents of this happening (and working)?

Dino isn't going to say he's making changes to then wait until feb lol some people on here, if we know something so does everyone, the changes will be made probably in the next 5-15 days, with HC's being fired in the upcoming days they'll be a lot of coaches looking for work on top of the fact we can poach from other coaching staffs.

I think Stanard, Swag, Reynolds, Ferri, and Lustig are safe.
I expect Martin will head back to Texas.
Ferri and Lustig could also leave on their own for pay increases.

arguably the worst 4 year position run is at safety and to date who’s THE best recruit - production wise - the guy has brought in?

So I looked up Fran brown. Why are we so super excited about him. Did I miss something. I can’t find anything in archives that make me scream hire him. What’s the reasoning.
He has been the top recruiter every stop he's been at. Temple had a good D and they pressure the QB while containing the run

Charlie Strong for DC/AsstHC?

I mean if he wanted to go back to being a DC and we had the money of course this could make sense. With his Florida recruiting ties someone is going to offer him a lot of money to be a DC.

The recruits we have so far aren’t all that great so waiting around to make changes is a waste of time. Bring in the new staff and hopefully they can come in with some of their recruits and then hit the pavement running trying to actually bring in some talent to this class. We are in a full blown five alarm fire and changes need to be swift and efficient. These changes will determine Dino’s longevity here.

How do you know they are not that great?

Any changes, or reshifting of the staff may not happen until after signing day in February. There is still recruiting to be done for the 2020 class and still a lot of changes to happen on staffs all over college football programs. The college coaches convention is usually in February may not hear anything about changes until then.
I would be surprised if he waits until the convention to let people go, if that's in the cards. It makes sense for that to happen sooner and for the hiring to maybe happen after the convention.

I have a feeling that the coaching staff has a pretty good idea where they stand. Wasn't it at Texas A&M when RC Slocum demoted Dino essentially through the press and Dino didn't appreciate that it was handled that way?

charlie strong’s not happening unfortunately

yeah, I mean we have a bunch of Dino guys prob going to play in the NFL and we didn’t before so I see your point

(Cisco, Robinson, Coleman, T. Jackson, Smyzt, Melifonwu - maybe Harris, Adams, DeVito)

January 12-14 in NashVegas.

Definitely should take a run at Strong and Addazio to see if there is any interest in coordinator/postion-asst. HC roles.

Addazio was a TE/OL coach here from 1995-98 under Coach P. You think he'll come back as a Non-HC?

Didn't he pull his son from the team once they didn't consider him for the HC job and he went to BC? He's a bit bitter at the university and I doubt we'll see him back even at HC.

His son transferred to BC when his dad was coaching there.

He was used as a blocker at BC

For a year as a coordinator or asst. HC role, why not? Take a gap year without all the responsibility, recharge, learn some things, and fix up the OL. Win/win.
