Dino's Game 7 Press Conference | FSU

Because Brent asked the question and he got an answer. We don't want scripted and cliche quotes, but when we get an honest one, the world is ending. You can't complain that the program is closed and guarded, but when someone says this is what's really happening, you get upset.

Those transfers are already starting or getting meaningful enough minutes to where you think they do. When he talks about depth, he means throughout the roster. For some units, after that first string, it goes to crap quickly.
Who recruited those kids?

Well, he lost a starting safety, corner back, and two rotational lineman, that's depth gone because of NIL. He also never pointed to it as the reason they were not competitive, he was answering Axe's question on the lack of depth.
And brought in these guys, who are either starting or playing significant snaps

More and Wohlabaugh lost to injury, and Davis brought in to shore up QB room.

If Dino wants to complain about depth, then yes, maybe another DL could have been brought in.

This list didn't even include Reed from JUCO on the OL.

Or the RB, or the WR.

He brought them in.

If they can't play, then that's on him.

We got people to field a team, but that doesn't mean losing those guys with 2-3 years of experience in a system is any less impactful. Editing here: but if they cant play, and they cant get people that play it could be because of NIL, it could because of a bad eye for talent. A coach isnt going to say he sucks at identifying talent.

Right and its a crap shoot with talent and system fit, etc.

But when people see us bringing in kids from South Carolina, Notre Dame, Alabama, Nebraska they tend to think those kids should be able to contribute at some level.

I don't know why that's hard for anyone to get.

To put it in terms that everyone here would understand, if someone at your job with ten years of experience leaves or is laid off, all of that knowledge and relationships fostered/established goes with them. You can hire someone to replace them, but they and their line of business are playing catch up because a void has been left. This is what's happening here. Yes, you brought in players from Nebraska and Notre Dame among other schools, but the people who left SU actually played whereas these guys are seeing game action in real-time that they didn't elsewhere. They are playing catch up and the team is dealing with it. SU has gotten by for the most part, but now it's starting to show.

After watching that press conference I have to believe we are going to get absolutely blasted this weekend. You think the North Carolina game was a beat down? Not sure if I have ever bet against the Cuse, but I just might have to make some serious easy cash and lay the points Saturday.
They going to be playing hangman again on the sidelines

Dino's NIL comments sound like a Kvetch and a stretch. The only 2 guys we lost due to NIL were Carter and Duce (who are both not even playing in their new destination). We actually got more DB depth from the transfer portal bringing in Gould, Bellamy, Farmer, and Jalil Martin. Everyone else who left was to get on the field more, which is happening to every school. He should be worried more about being one of the least disciplined teams and not having a good OL year after year (Long before NIL/Transfer Portal) than anything else.

We're definitely a little more thin at DEnd than I thought. Losing Geer and Linton really hurt the depth for sure. You can't look at the roster and not agree with this. With Jacquez out, we have Simmons and Jobity are the only two with prior game PT. And moving Lockett outside removes an edge rusher. Not sure what the answer is here right now.

We replaced the defensive backs. If he doesn't think they're as good as the two DBs we lost then that's fair.

We have a true frosh playing full back on goal line that came in out of high school as a prolific pass rusher

But, I'm not the coach, so what do I know

At the end of the day we are in the wrong conference. Said it for last 5 years. Culturally it doesn’t fit because some of those sec like schools are factories and will spend more than SU on students

I’m rooting for the ACC to destabilize because we frankly can’t survive a Clemson, NC, FSU schedule ever. It’s now multiple times we are meat grinded.

Dino recognizes it too and his mojo is gone. Our program can survive a Miami once a year or Penn st but this malaise during conference play is just soul sucking

Outside of Clemson (who we are competitive with every year) and FSU (meh) how is that so? Half the Big East is in the ACC. Running into Lamar Jackson or Drake Maye is a problem but that happens.

Dino's not alone and Kentucky is 5-1 ranked 24th.

Same premise bigger stage and he is 100% right but fans will say that S Carolina and Auburn played them tougher than we (UK) did but guess what they got curb stomped by a Georgia team that woke up on Saturday. I mean teams are losing recruits to the higher bidder all the time it's just out in the public now.

The problem exists everywhere just at different levels

His position is inside, not pass rushing DEnd.

Dino has to be feeling the pressure. He most likely doesn't have the comfort of a big buyout to cover him. Syracuse has plenty of support to be competitive. As we build the roster via the portal, we insulate ourselves from further attrition as kids who portal in will most likely stay. We have picked up more contributors than we have lost. We have upgraded the roster as our portal players are significantly higher rated than his HS classes have been. He needs to stay the course stay positive not put this on the administration or his players but own his own failures. He should focus on in game management and providing kids who are on the bench like Gill and Long a chance to play. I also want to see Carlos if Shrader is failing. Mix it up and give others an opportunity especially when you are getting killed. Why keep Shrader and others in as long as he did with the contest over. I stand by my statement that if he makes a bowl he stays if not he is gone. Man, up Dino, what happened to La Familia
Excellent...you hit it out of the park!!!

This job eats everyone alive. And he's been using that depth argument for years. First it was he needed more recruiting classes, now it's because it's being bought away.

I'm starting to lean towards thinking longevity at the SU coaching job isn't something that will work. Might be better off recycling every 4-5 years and getting transfer/recruiting momentum.

We'll see how this year ends though. Could be 9-3. Unlikely, but could be. If 6-6 or worse, probably time to recycle.

If I were Dino, and I wanted to stay in this job, Shrader would be playing DeVito ball this weekend. Only handoffs, and if flushed, then run to the right, outside the tackle box, and heave it out of bounds. No hits.

His running like the Purdue game is what gets us wins in the last 5. Can't do it if we let FSU beat him into the ground. No hero ball for him this week.

Agreed. The big objective for this week is to avoid any key injuries against FSU, then head into the bye week with an extra week to recuperate and prepare for the home stretch. Have to win 4 out of those last 5.

Anything less is unacceptable.

yep but we need to let the season play out and see where things wind up. Too early to tell right now. Could be 5 wins could be 8, IMO. Lot of football left. If we want to discuss the limited ceiling with Dino as the HC then yeah that would make sense because I do feel like the ceiling is very limited. However, if he makes a bowl game then we might be looking at more time with Dino

Season hinges on that Vatech game. Get a win there and gets some positive momentum this team could be bowl eligible after BC and then who knows. Va Tech looks real bad but this game screams classic Dino team post bye no show. I've brought up the NC State game in 2019 and while I hope I am wrong this game is giving off similar vibes. The UNC performance, the weird Babers PC and what is likely to be a curb stomping Sat are all bad signs heading into the final 5 games that are all winnable but also losable especially as certain positions (DE and WR) continue to regress. I wouldn't be shocked if this team went 5-7 at all.

Agree with this, our preparation and game planning after bye weeks suck. It also seems that this team lacks mental toughness. Too many penalties, starting off slow, letting one mistake dictate a game, they need VT to change the narrative and finish strong. I think 4-8 is a possibility but I also think that 9-3 is too. I’m settling in at 6-6

Well, that “3rd year, 4th game” promise of his is looooooong gone! He’s now, and has been for some time, an imposter as a P5 level coach; 19-42 after Saturday’s affair.

And, he’s plenty aware he can talk the talk, but incapable of walking the walk.
I completely forgot about that very specific prediction … Dino is a sphinx without a secret (ht Oscar Wilde!)

The players want two things.
1. Get to NFL - which requires playing time
2. NIL money
We are Syracuse. Let the kids go get their NIL money somewhere else and then pound the portal to give them the playing time they aren't getting elsewhere. That's the only way we can be competitive in this environment.

yep. Seems like there have been a few coaches offering up similar responses when things don't go their way. I mean we have been blown out countless times over the years, just take your medicine and move on. Win 7 games Dino keep your job, nobody is saying you need to attain anything more than average results but that might not be that easy at Syracuse
It’s one thing to say the roster would be better with those guys than not, but the roster didn’t get gutted. That was a disappointing bit.

They got smoked, it happens, focus on what makes those type of games hard in the future (hint offensive line), and move on.

This season was always about the first four and last five.

Get Jones, Ellis, More and hopefully Peña ready for VT and put the hammer down,

Very fair points. After the game next week, I honestly have zero clue what to expect the rest of the season. Nothing either way would surprise me.
