Dino's Presser

I agree he should be getting real situational reps now. Not just mop up. I dont know their reason but there are reasons. We saw a small sample size. As much as I want to see Jacobian out there we also have to realize that it can be a disaster if you start him. I think he should gradually get more reps and series. He is gonna get so much thrown at him from real ACC defenses. Remember the staff has already thrown different things at him in practice and knows how he reacts. I just think Its way too much to put on a kid that just started learning the offense 3 weeks ago. Starting him and getting off to a bad start can set a bad tone. Then all phases start to play sloppy.

As John Lennon said, "it can't get no worse".

Thats fair. I hear ya. I think most are disappointed in the last two years. Though it’s possible our expectations were a bit high following ED. Dunno. To me everything starts and ends with the oline and dline. If you have weakness in the areas, then the ripple effect out hits everything.
Hard to argue with that.

my line of thinking is the tone has already been set, we’re 1-6 averaging 19 points per game, we have 14 offensive touchdowns to 12 turnovers on the season. it cannot get much worse, let’s get something productive out of this season and let this kid get meaningful snaps.

I think OttoinGrotto and I were the earliest and most persistent voices calling for Dino to be our head coach. I have tried to be positive and supportive since he got here. However, I am really disappointed with his post-game presser and it strains my goodwill.

He was first asked about Cooper Lutz and gushed about his performance. But when asked about JaCobian Morgan, he said, "I'm glad he didn’t fumble the snap. I'm glad it looked like he could throw the football. But again, I wouldn't put too much stock on that - ya know that's the end of the game and we're running out the clock ourselves. Guys were giving him those throws. Pretty sure he didn't get blitzed - I'll go back and check the tape. But that's like throwing 7 on 7 that's not like a real football game. Someone said to me he did what he was supposed to do. If someone was going to play that defense and play that style, you would expect him to go in there and be able to complete a lot of balls and, If I'm not mistaken, he did. I can't remember one hitting the ground if there was any."

He was then asked how far away it was before he could come in to get some experience. He responded with the standard reply that we would have to slim down the offense for him and "all that stuff is down the road."

I can't believe how dismissive he was and if I were his father, I would call it insulating.
I don't care if reserves are in the game because they are playing hard trying to win playing time. Every pass was on target and on time.
AND he was blitzed twice. Once he got it out quickly and on the other he escaped when the pocket collapsed and threw a strike downfield while going to his left on-the-run.

He took what was there and had good vision and poise. His 10-play drive covered 80 yards in 4 minutes and 17 seconds. He completed passes to 6 different receivers.

He deserved encouragement and praise not the dismissive BS Dino threw out there. We were running out the clock ourselves but just happened to throw 7 passes out of 10 plays!! Come on, man.

Our senior starter has completed 46% of his passes with 6 TDs and 7 picks. His QBR against Wake was 5.8. He is getting worse not better. Dino's position strains credulity.

I don't know if he is losing the locker room but he sure as he'll is losing the fan base.
I'm not putting much stock in what he says about a guy in public. He's probably trying to temper fanbase expectations, as he's seen how quickly they get out of control, especially regarding QBs. What he says to the kid behind closed doors could be completely different and I'm sure is much more detailed with both pros and cons.

I dont think there's anyone saying dont let him play. He absolutely should get meaningful snaps. You just have to be smart how you do it. Especially the way they call plays and having 3 weeks of learning the offense. You don't want to get him killed and leave mental and physical scars that effects the rest of his career.

So, it's OK to let Rex get killed? And, after going 7-for-7 and a TD, he's going to need therapy after throwing a couple of picks? Nonsense - he's going to shrug it off and chalk it up to the learning process. There is absolutely no reason not to give him serious minutes, even starting him, on Saturday.

Rex is getting killed? sacked twice in each of the last two games. TD was getting killed. Rex knows the offense enough to not be indecisive and put his self in danger. Do you honestly think Rex couldn't throw 3 yard stick routes against a 2nd team defense playing prevent? Rex is not good but lets not make it look like he didnt do anything at all. lol. The QB position is more than throwing 3 yard hitches and 2 yard speed outs. Lets be realistic and take our emotions out of it. We all want Jacobian to play and he should be put in more competitive situations but I understand coaching enough to know there is a reason why he hasnt yet.

This is what I don't get. There have been tons of discussion about how Devito may be scarred because of the oline and that was with two years of sitting and learning and a little success as a back up. Now, some of the same people are saying, "Start the kid, it can't hurt." It absolutely can hurt. Maybe not regarding this year's record but it could kill a young guy's psyche. If we had a solid oline with a running game to lean on, I could see it.

I think Dino is letting Rex take a beating (psychologically if not physically) to save these kids for down the road. If they're ever going to be good enough to help us, it'll be then, not during a season where they had no spring and an abbreviated preseason.

Agreed, get the kid some game reps, few packages in certain situations. No spring and some half ass summer camp don't prep the kid properly. If he progresses build on the success but I would hate to just start him for 4 quarters and it be a complete disaster beyond recognition.

rex is a 5th year senior, tough kid he can handle it. People will say it can't get any worse and I see the point but don't ruin the kid either. Bring him a long slowly and increase the PT as he progresses on the field and yeah maybe start him the last game or two if it looks like things are moving in the right direction.

There obviously was never any type of plan to actually play these kids this year

Sometimes its hard to gain that confidence back. Each kid is different. Anyone that thinks they can determine what a kid can and can't handle is sadly mistaken. Dino has always played freshmans if he could. They are currently playing a record amount of true freshmans. Why would Dino not want to play a freshman QB if he can? We have to stop thinking so simplistically.

Good post and people who are saying it can't be any worse don't know and don't care about the dynamics of team football. They just care about numbers ( jersey # and wins).

I feel everyone is saying the same thing. JM does not need to start but he should get meaningful snaps (not the last few minutes of a game). I would also let DM start getting some snaps toward the end of games. It does not hurt to give them limited opportunities. Dino just needs to tell them it’s okay to make mistakes it’s a process.
What I do not want to see is not giving JM or DM any opportunities and then start one against ND. That would set them up for failure.

for sure, seems like we’re on the same page. you don’t want to wreck his confidence, but at the same time i’d like to see him actually get snaps against a defense that’s throwing things at him. wake sat back in prevent and let him have anything he wanted, not to mention most if not all their starters were out of the game at that point. if you don’t want to start him right away, let him get some run early in the 3rd and ease him into it and get him in a rhythm with some easy completions and build from there. regardless of how you want to do it, he should be getting more snaps than garbage time snaps.

Yes, good post and that would be a good strategy.

I hope by this time next year we’re talking about extending his extension.

Team is bad and people are in “get the coach” mode, just looking for grievances.

I wouldn't mind having Rex start the game and unless he's ripping it up, let Jacobian and Dillon alternate drives in the 2nd half. Apparently, they're close in practice and it gives each of them a chance to get their feet wet without being too overwhelmed.

Not at all. I was shocked at his dismissive statement nothing else. Not like him.

‘what? Jordan is still hyped here as a cross between Reggie Bush and Warrick Dunn, it’s just that Dino isn’t utilizing him properly. People need to get a grip and realize just what we are up against here.
6 wins should be what we strive for, 4 in OOC 2 in ACC or 3 in each is not some unattainable goal, we should start scheduling the OOC as the under .500 team we've been the last 20 years and have 4 cupcakes to start. I'm with you tho the board is nuts at times

we did that this year then covid said na you can play nd and unc instead

I mean if we can't beat liberty idk how we beat WMU, probably a good thing no rutgers if were trying to find a positive lol
liberty is borderline top 25 this year

Jacobian certainly looks the part. Cool as a cucumber look pre-snap. Eyes stayed downfield on the one scramble to the left and beautiful cross body throw on the run which most players cant do. Last point the TD pass was money. He had to make a split second read and did so while delivering a dime. I realize it was against the 2nd team but i also saw a calmness that jumped off the screen. I saw the same thing the same flash the first few carries from Tucker and posted like many on this board about his potential.
Granted QB is a different position than RB but my two cents is that Jacobian is the real deal. Kids a gamer.
