Dino's Salary Info (from Pete Thamel)

How does he know Syracuse is not flush with cash? We're one of the few schools that show a profit from athletics IIRC. SU is also a private school so their financial records aren't exactly open to the public. We've put in some money into facilities and the student experience, and have a current $150M renovation ongoing. We spend, but just don't get the headlines like other schools (talking heads still believe we don't have AC and it's still the Carrier Dome). I would think we have $10M, if needed. Not that we want to spend that, but I think we're okay financially. But, what do I know.

Yep they should have negotiated a deal, and Dino should have signed a contract, with a penal front end buyout if Dino had an opportunity to move a year or two later but had him take on the long term downside risk with a minimal back end if SU wanted to kick him to the curb.

I remember just a few years ago most people were screaming “pay the man”. Well he got paid.

Absolutely. I'm torn on this one. The school absolutely can pay top dollar for a college head coach. the virginia coordinators didn't come cheap either. The school is paying well within the number to run a successful program.

My entire issue is the ROI for Dino has been atrocious since the signing. It's simple win/loss metric. We paid market when he got us to a bowl and has fallen on his face since. If the school can go 5m per for a HC and I assume 2-3mm more assistants we can afford another coach if Dino doesn't turn this ship around.

In a weird way i'm optimistic now more than ever seeing this figure. We are a big boy financially speaking. Speaks well for the next HC of SU basketball too

Does it imply that he got a 6 year, $30M deal after the 2018 season?

Buyout just being what's remaining on the guaranteed contract?

I know no one really knows, but I guess just wondering if I have the math right.

Not sure why the buyout would be more than the salary. Someone would have to explain this to me. It's a huge number per prior SU football deals.

SU has been spending big bucks. $150+ million in Dome updates, $150 million in Manley renovations, Dino getting paid, big time new assistants, and additional recruiting staff. Big investments that need to start paying off. No one can say SU is going cheap. That’s a lot of money to be potentially left out in the realignment fiasco taking place in college football.

There’s no question in my mind that Anea and Beck would not have come here under a one-year deal. No way no how could I see Beck uprooting his family under the umbrella of a 1 year possibility, win this year or you’re out. Had to be two years minimum

So a large buyout makes sense to me and I’m fine with it.

In the everyday lives of most of us, $10 mil is a seemingly huge number. In today's world of college football, that is not out of the ordinary at all, however.

The difference is we don't have some oil booster who's willing to write a $10 mil check to get rid of him if he was no longer welcomed.

We are a shrinking fish in a growing pond.

Why release this info now?

5-7 and 5-7 sandwiched around a season that should have been shelved isn’t atrocious. Disappointing, sure. And the team was playing well through the first nine weeks last year. Even with the there game skid they finished 18th in total defense, 26th in rushing and passing defense, and 17th in rushing offense. The record should have been better, but that is far from atrocious, it’s a good foundation to build on.

Last year, absent Dino's coaching, should have been a bowl year. We can't let him off the hook on that one. I've never seen worse in game coaching management than some of his decisions that cost us big wins.

Holistically we are who we are. The game that really irritates me is the Maryland one where we didn't look prepared at all. That's on the HC IMO. Yes, the records are 5-7 with the mulligan covid year which everyone, mind you, was dealing with similar issues.

I do think we need to take off the rosy glasses and look at his record so far and say, "not good enough". This year is key to turn it around. Dino has been given the absolute longest rope in college football of late. For our patience i'm hoping we're rewarded with a season that is a surprise to the national pundits

To follow up on this. At some point, SU has to see some tangible improvement if they want to fundraise their priorities. This team could bring everything to fruition if they have a really good year. I don’t think SU is making these investments to go 6-6. We need better than this to change the recruiting narrative which is still bottom of the ACC.

The 2019 team was a trainwreck, that was the one year where Dino failed miserably, IMO. He has generally gotten kids to play hard for him, 2019 was not that way. The Covid year was brutal, but we did have an insane amount of injuries and opt outs, more than most were dealing with, although it was Dino and staff's fault that Rex Culpepper was our backup QB, that cannot happen. He certainly made some brutal in game decisions last year, supposedly Anae and Beck are going to be helping with clock and in-game management, that would be a good thing. Kids seem to love him and are very loyal to him, if he can be more of a CEO-type coach, I think he can succeed with the staff he now has in place and some better talent that we now have vs prior years.

Not sure if it's right, but if there's $10M left due to a guaranteed contract, it would make sense.

I'm sure Anae, Beck, and even White who has proven himself, aren't coming cheap these days either.
I just don't understand how this is even possible, how can they possibly afford this. It's up there with nhl payrolls to me, inexplicable

Thamel has connections but I have serious questions if that figure is accurate. Irregardless if we have another losing season and its clear its not working Wildhack can't afford not to make a move. Were hemorrhaging what left of the fanbase
Eh, I think fans will come out of the woodwork when we win, regardless of who the coach is.

After 20 years of being a bad program, I don’t see it as a race against time.

We just hired a proven offensive staff to complement our proven D staff. Hopefully they stick. We can't keep changing what we're doing on offense. We need continuity - if you're experienced players are learning something new every year, how experienced are they? We have to let this play out and (hopefully) enjoy the ride.

hopefully this year we change from not being able to complete the forward pass to be able to more regularly

I still think the “5 losing seasons in 6 seasons”, while a factual statement, is kind of a misleading way to look at things.

The program and team stunk when he took over. Despite his first two seasons being “losing” seasons - I think the teams played better than expectations and that he got the most out of them.

Year 3 was the best season we’d had in 17 years. It was glorious. He started off 3 for 3, as far as I’m concerned.

Year 4 was a major disappointment and year 5 was a trainwreck(though it almost felt like a scrimmage year with everything going on).

Last year was a mixed bag.

He’s like 3.5 for 6, to me.
